Colorado Springs | Home Improvement Projects: Do-It-Yourself ...

When installing a waterfall or pond it is very important to select the proper location. The pond needs to have at least 4 hours of sunlight a day, but will benefit from some shade as well. Make sure that landscape drainage will not flow into the location you select. Most of all be sure that the pond is located in an area that you and your family can enjoy.

The next step is to measure and plot out the area where the pond will go. The general shape of the overall plan should be lined out. Spray paint will work better than chalk, which can be rubbed away too easily. Stakes and flags can also be used. Utility numbers need to be called prior to a shovel hitting the dirt.

The sides of the pond need to be dug out in layers, so that they don?t crumble. It will also a better appearance this way, and be more healthy for the plant life. Shovel the dirt from the pond into a hill for the waterfall. Utilize a leveling tool to check the pond?s bottom. Dig up the dirt where the stream will be also, and add it to the waterfall area.

Putting in the liner will be done once the digging is finished. First, lay sand down in the bottom, and smooth it out. Since it has to be unfolded and then walked to the pond, placing the liner is more than a one man job. Moving the liner along the ground is not an appropriate way of transporting it to the pond. Make sure to purchase a high quality liner, as this is not a good place to skimp. You will not want to have to dig all of this up later to replace a cheap liner.

After the liner, it is time to place the equipment. A water pump, skimmer, and filter are all included at this time. Employing a person who is trained to work with electricity is a great idea for this part, since they can install outlets which are approved for the outside.

Your next step in the process will be to add gravel and rocks to the project. Adding a second protective layer over the liner and laying rocks over it is a good way to safeguard it and keep it stable. Plant and animal life will thrive if different sized stones are added to the bottom of the pond. Spray the rocks clean of dirt, and then sump pump the muddy water out of your pond.

Be sure all of the soil has been removed after the rocks are all in place. Then it is time to add water. Unless you have a well, you will have to remove the chlorine from the water. Otherwise, the chemical can harm any wildlife you might add to the pond.

Adding your fish and plants will complete the DIY project. Plant life will help to maintain and clean and healthy pond. After adding the plants, wait two weeks before adding the fish. Doing so will give the plants time to add nutrients to the water, causing the fish?s start to be healthier.
