Review of Zane Education Videos for Homeschooling

logowithoutmotto

The goal of Zane Education is to provide a library of online educational videos, which are designed to teach subjects taught in schools.? They believe that adding videos, and especially videos with subtitles, will aid student learning and improve literacy.? To accomplish this they offer nearly 2,000 curriculum-based education videos and a quiz database which covers 11 different subjects and more than 260 curriculum topics for K-12 grades.

I had the chance to evaluate Zane Education?s Gold Subscription, which includes access to all videos, quizzes, reference tools, Zane Learning Catalogue, and Christian Home Learning Guide and costs $197.89 per year. There are a number of other membership options, including monthly memberships, so check out their Membership Page for full details on costs.

subjectsThe first thing I noticed about the site is just how many videos they have, and what a wide variety of subjects are covered.? It is difficult to decide where to start, but luckily they include a Getting Started Guide and a Curriculum Topic and Video Title Catalog so you can figure out what videos will match up with what you are teaching.

The videos have quizzes that can be taken after watching them, which is very nice.? It is a quick way to make sure the kids are paying attention and retained some information.? Zane Education makes a big deal about the subtitles that are included, which are designed to improve reading and literary skills.? I didn?t think I would care one way or the other about subtitles, since my children are 13 and 16, and read well.? But I actually liked them, and like the way the eye is drawn to them to follow along with the audio. I think this could definitely provide a benefit in increasing vocabulary and improving spelling.? I also like that none of the videos I or my kids watched were cartoony or silly.

My son?s first reaction to the videos was disappointment that the videos are mostly slide shows, not live action.? It was not what he was expecting when I told him I wanted him to watch some education videos, and he found them not as engaging as I though he would.? He watched the astronomy and learned some information from them, but he wasn?t asking to watch more.? I?d also like to see more high school level material.? But the biggest change I would like to see is the ability to make the videos full screen, which right now is not possible.

For us I think these videos will make a nice supplement to our homeschooling.? For example, art and music are subjects that get shortchanged in my house, because I am not artsy at all.? So I definitely see us using the History of Music and the Great Works of Art series of videos to help me out in these areas, and make sure I cover the material that should be covered.

A number of the videos are available for free on the Zane Education website, so check them out and see what you think.? You can connect with Zane Education on Facebook, and right now Zane Education is offering a 35% discount on the purchase of any annual 12-month Gold, Silver or Bronze Membership subscription through until the end of August 2012.? Just use the discount code ZE699HSM at checkout.
