MIAMI (AP) ? The National Hurricane Center says water levels are rising from Irene's storm surge as the hurricane heads up the mid-Atlantic coast.
The center said at 2 a.m. EDT Sunday that Irene's sustained winds were topping out at 80 mph (130 kph) with higher gusts and the storm is moving north-northeast at 17 mph (28 kph). It was centered about 195 miles (315 km) south-southwest of New York City.
The Miami center adds that water levels have been rising rapidly with storm surge values of 3.2 feet (0.98 meters) at Ocean City, Maryland 3.4 feet (1.04 meters) at Cape May, New Jersey, and 3.5 feet (1.07 meters) at New York Harbor.
Forecasters say Irene made first U.S. landfall in North Carolina on Saturday morning and is expected to do so again about midday Sunday near Long Island, New York.
