Arcade Fire ablaze with Mick Jagger
Three Concordia alumni shared the stage with Mick Jagger when the
Rolling Stone hosted Saturday Night Live in New York in May. Members of the Grammy
Award-winning band Arcade Fire, Sarah Neufeld, BFA 03, and Richard Reed
Parry, BFA 03, both hold a music degree, specializing in electroacoustic
studies, and R?gine Chassagne, BA 98, is a communications studies
graduate.
A sound fine arts education
Two undergraduate students whose pioneering research work has been
recognized around the world were chosen as Concordia Great Graduates of 2012. Drawn to the university for its electroacoustic studies program,
Julian and Max Stein, BFA 12, created the Montreal Sound Map.
She Cannes do it
Film production graduate Chlo? Robichaud, BFA 10, was a finalist for the
2012 Short Film Palme d'or award at the Cannes Film Festival. It was
her third Cannes entry in as many years.
China doc zone
Yung Chang, BFA 99, recently released his second documentary, China
Heavyweight. Both this and his critically acclaimed debut documentary,
Up The Yangtze (2007), were produced by EyeSteelFilm, co-founded by
Cinema faculty member Daniel Cross.
Grad starts career in Japan
Armed with a new BFA in Art Education, Ida Zhang is
heading to Asia this summer to begin the one-year teaching position she
earned from JET, the Japan Exchange and Teaching program. Zhang, who was chosen as one of the university's Great Graduates of 2012, also won the Art Education Prize for her leadership and academic
achievement.
Choreographers join the Cirque
Contemporary Dance alumni Andrew Tay, BFA 10, and Sasha Kleinplatz, BFA
04, were hired to choreograph the Cirque du Soleil's summer show Chemins
invisibles in Quebec City, in which other alumni will perform.
Designs get global attention
Once again, undergraduate students from the Department of Design and
Computation Arts got to show off their newfound chops at the Montreal
International Design Show. Known as SIDIM, the high-profile show
attracts some 20,000 design industry folks, consumers and journalists
from around the world.
Hitting a high note
The 2012 valedictorian for the Faculty of Fine Arts comes from the
Department of Art History. Successful singer/musician -- and 2012 Great Graduate -- Felicity Hamer
relishes art history, saying it's like detective work, and is going to
pursue an MFA in the field.
Fringe feeders
Concordia has been well-represented at this year's St-Ambroise Montreal
Fringe Festival, a celebration of independent theatre, dance and music.
The festival director is Amy Blackmore, a Contemporary Dance alumna, and
many other Concordians will be involved.
Oh, Canada shouts Oh, Concordia
Nearly a quarter of the artists and curators featured in an exhibition
at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) are Studio
Arts and Art History alumni and faculty. MASS MoCA's Oh, Canada will
showcase works by artists from across the country until April 1, 2013.
