Wi-fi match result ? Samsung S4: 1 Apple iPhone 5: O

D-Link expounds the benefits of 802.11ac to GoMo

One of the last things which GoMo News would have expected to have put a nail in the coffin for Apple?s domination of the smartphone market is Wi-fi. But as far as we?re concerned it just has. GoMo News trotted down to London?s Soho to chat with the crew from D-Link Europe. Chiefly Paul Howard, the company?s technical manager for Telcos & ISPs. He?s really sold us on the benefits of 802.11ac. Which in layman?s terms is the newest, fastest version of Wi-fi. When asked if 11ac is in smartphones yet, Howard immediately informed us that it is. Indeed, built into the very latest Samsung handset (S4). Which means it ain?t in the latest iPhone (5).

Why would you want 802.11ac support in your handset in the first place? [We think they really should call it superfast Wi-fi. Ed]

Two very good reasons. Compared to the existing Wi-fi ?standard (802.11n) it is three times faster.

More importantly, however, however it is an incredible six times lower in power consumption than 802.11n.

Given the struggle that most handset manufacturers have to keep their smartphones going on a single day?s charge ? that?s a welcome power saving.

In practice, 802.11ac hasn?t been ratified yet. D-Link says that this doesn?t matter because it?s extremely unlikely that any mods will be needed.

One good reason for this is that 802.11ac doesn?t work at 2.4 GHz ? only 5 GHz.

Which means that the Bluetooth brigade hasn?t made any objections because Bluetooth only works at 2.4 GHz.

Apart from lightning file transfer speeds, why would you want superfast Wi-fi inside your smartphone.

Well, it just so happens that a company like D-Link makes Wi-fi routers for your home.

And in its top of the range models ? like the DIR-868L, there?s a facility called USB SharePort.

You can load a movie you?ve downloaded onto a USB memory stick/hard drive and then share it across any of the devices in your home.

Including your smartphone, naturally. Plus the DIR-868L can support speeds up to 1,300 Mbit/s. So no jitter on the video, then.

GoMOoNews discovered that D-Link does some really neat apps (Android & iOS) too.

D-Link has promised to lend us a router to try the apps out. So we will let you know!

Samsung Galaxy S 4 for Verizon possibly spied in Brown Autumn

History might be repeating itself. Just as Samsung launched a red Galaxy S III for AT&T and followed up with black and brown Verizon models, a new @evleaks image hints that AT&T's red Galaxy S 4 could be matched by a Brown Autumn equivalent on Verizon. The product shot doesn't reveal more than the color, mind you -- we don't know when this GS4 could ship, or if Blue Arctic would tag along. If the past is anything to go by, though, customers won't have to pay a premium for any additional Verizon hues.

Jeff Van Gundy Backs Ewing as Head Coach

Updated:?July 19, 2013,?8:03 am?ET

Earlier this summer, Patrick Ewing Jr. took to Twitter to express frustration that his Hall of Fame father was still an assistant coach after 10 seasons. It all happened when Jason Kidd became the Brooklyn Nets? head coach with no prior NBA coaching experience.

Well, Ewing Jr. isn?t the only one who?s confused about Patrick Ewing?s situation. On Thursday, former Knicks coach and ESPN NBA analyst Jeff Van Gundy went on a serious monologue on ESPN New York 98.7 FM radio, saying, ?I just don?t understand the reluctance by some general managers to view him as a viable candidate.?

?I?d like for someone to take my word for it. Ewing would be an outstanding head coach, but no one has bitten yet,? he said. ?

'Zero budgeting' Shropshire Council plan to find savings of ?80m ...

Council departments across Shropshire will have to make a business case to get money under new plans aimed at helping authority make another ?80 million in savings over the next three years.

Shropshire Council is taking the step of using ?zero budgeting? for the first time as it reviews all of its departments.

It means every department will start with a budget of zero and have to produce a business case for the amount of funding it needs to run its services, rather than being given a set amount each year.

Finance officers hope the new approach could help reduce some budgets by up to 50 per cent over the coming years.

The proposals will be considered as part of a report detailing the financial strategy for 2014/15 to 2023/24 which will go before cabinet on Wednesday.

Council leader Keith Barrow said: ?We are fundamentally changing the way we work because the financial position we are in now is a world away from the situation just a few years ago.

?We have to reduce the amount the council spends, and we think that making every department justify how much budget they need rather than just giving them a pot of money will help do that.

?It may seem like common sense, but this is actually quite a revolutionary way of working in the public sector, although it is of course commonplace in the business world.?

Councillor Barrow said the amount of money the authority was being asked to save was ?huge? and the council ?simply can?t carry on doing what we have always done?.

He said: ?We are looking at a range of innovative ways of providing services differently, mainly based around commissioning services locally by asking people what they need rather than us telling them what we think they need.

?As well as producing more efficient services which are better suited to people?s needs, this will save a significant amount of money too, by cutting out bureaucracy and overlapping services.

?Zero-based budgeting is another way of driving down costs and making sure that council tax-payers? money is going as far as it possibly can. We are facing a big challenge and it won?t be easy, but I?m confident we can deliver.?

More information will be given about the changes taking place at the council as part of a consultation due to take place over the coming weeks.

Rupee fall could constrain India?s ratings: Moody?s

Updated: Thu, Jul 18 2013. 04 58 PM IST

Moody?s Investors Service says rupee depreciation will exacerbate inflationary and fiscal pressures, with both factors potentially constraining the country?s sovereign rating.

India?s recent measures to prop up the rupee may limit exchange rate volatility to some degree but a sustained reversal in the rupee?s would require a significant narrowing of the trade deficit or large capital flows, Moody?s adds.

?Given the subdued global growth outlook and price inelasticity of some major imports, depreciation is unlikely to accelerate export growth or curb import growth significantly in the near term,? analysts wrote.

Moody?s has a ?stable? outlook on India?s ?Baa3? rating, its lowest investment grade-rating.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Two Republican senators are visiting Des Moines to court? a group that could wield powerful influence over the outcome of the state's 2016 GOP presidential caucuses ? Iowa's evangelical pastors.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz privately has addressed the gathering assembled by the conservative American Renewal Project at a downtown hotel Friday morning. Also scheduled to appear around midday is Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, the son of former Texas Rep. Ron Paul. Both are conservatives favored by the tea party wing of the GOP.
