Movie Review: Computer Chess

Photo courtesy of producers Houston King and Alex Lipschultz

By Callum Glennen

?You know what I think the future of computers is? Dating.? The programmers chuckle at the thought of it. The computers they are tinkering with aren?t capable of beating a human at chess yet, but the future looks promising. With period cinematography and deliberately sloppy editing, Andrew Bujalski?s latest film shines as a surreal look backwards to the dawn of the digital age where the future seems limitless, the present is restrained by the current technology, and the humanity of artificial intelligence is in question.

In the early ?80s, the brightest minds in chess programming pit their machines against one another in the pursuit of innovation and victory. During the nights between games, increasingly bizarre events occur to and around the programmers as they wrestle with what the future holds for their machines, and artificial intelligence being more human than their socially awkward creators.

While not a documentary, Computer Chess starts out pretending that it is. Shot entirely on a camera from the ?60s in black and white, it gives the impression that it was found buried in one of the now ancient machines that is the subject of the film. Often out of focus, continually grainy and occasionally out of sync audio adds to the dated effect. It?s satisfyingly effective, and exaggerates how old the machines in question are.

It?s quite different to other recent films looking at the history of computer technology. While the nerds of modern culture are quick-witted and endearingly eccentric, the stars of Computer Chess are awkward, shy, and struggle with simple human interaction. It?s a completely different representation of the modern rock star geek.

None of the main actors are professional and the film was entirely improvised. This creates genuine awkwardness, and it fits almost perfectly with the type of programmer it is trying to reflect. Additionally, with little direction was given as to what the plot of the film even was, the actors seem even more surprised than the audience. While occasionally it does come across as inexperienced acting, those moments are few and don?t distract much.

Computer Chess is not an easy film to categorize. It is not about the history of computers, and it?s not really about the people who made them. Instead, it is obsessed with showing the line between computers and man, and asking whether it can be crossed. Just like the outcomes of a chess game, this film is black, white and infinitely complex.

In a haze, one of the programmers poses the question: ?Real artificial intelligence, is that the same as artificial real intelligence??

Andrew Mason Tweeting About Oranges Before ... - Business Insider

A day before he was fired, Groupon CEO Andrew Masonsent this cryptic tweet about attending a meeting of four people being asked to share three oranges in a meeting:

On Feb. 28, to announce he was let go, he tweeted:

The Jottit note linked to his quirky resignation letter, the one that said, "I've decided that I'd like to spend more time with my family. Just kidding - I was fired today."

In hindsight, the "oranges meeting" sounds ominous. So the question is, what was the deal with the three oranges? And who could have been the four people asked to share them?

Here's a thought: Mason was replaced by chairman Eric Lefkofsky and director Ted Leonsis. So those three people would have been in Mason's final meeting at Groupon, presumably. Mason and Lefkofsky hold controlling interests in Groupon stock along with one other board director: Brad Keywell.

Mason + Lefkofsky + Leonsis + Keywell = four people.

We tweeted at Mason for a comment. We'll let you know if he replies.

In the meantime, TheStreet?s Chris Ciacciaone noted this:

How milk banks work - The Orange County Register

Milk banks, like blood banks, provide to those most in need. They also rely on volunteers, test their supplies and can experience shortages.

Q. Who needs donated milk?

A. Premature babies are the biggest consumers of pasteurized breast milk. Most insurance companies will cover the cost of banked milk if it is medically necessary, according to the nonprofit Mothers Milk Bank in San Jose.

Q. Are donors paid?

A. No. Most milk banks are nonprofits and rely on donations, just like for blood or organs.

Q. How much does milk cost?

A. Children's Hospital of Orange County pays $3 per ounce and buys about 4,500 to 5,000 ounces from Mothers Milk Bank per year, said Caroline Steele, director of clinical nutrition and lactation services.

Q. What does it take to become a donor?

A. Mothers must fill out health questionnaires and undergo a blood test before beginning to donate.

Q. What happens to the milk?

A. The milk from several donors is pooled after thawing, and then heat-treated to kill any bacteria or viruses, according to the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. The milk is processed and then refrozen. It is only dispensed after a sample is cultured and shows no bacteria growth.

Q. Does pasteurization change the nutritional value of breast milk?

A. A little bit. "It makes some slight changes, but really the majority of both the nutritional and anti-infective properties of milk are all maintained, even with the pasteurization process. It's definitely second to mom's own milk," Steele said.

Q. Is there a typical donor?

A. It varies. "There are moms who work full time who are pumping while they're at work," said Loren Kosmont, a spokeswoman for Prolacta, which is affiliated with South Coast Milk Bank in Irvine. "There are stay-at-home moms who are pumping and they have extra. It really comes down to if that mom has surplus milk and she knows she can do something with it. It's really painful to have to pour that liquid gold down the drain."
