Four killed, including Frenchman, in southern Senegal

DAKAR (Reuters) - Four people, including a Frenchman, were killed in Senegal's southern Casamance region when suspected separatist rebels clashed with government soldiers, a military source said on Saturday.

The shoot-out took place late on Friday after suspected members of the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC), which has led a low-level insurgency in the region since the 1980s, robbed a bank in the town of Kafoutine.

"There are four dead including a Frenchman," said the source. He said the French victim had lived in Casamance and was married to a Senegalese woman.

The others killed in the attack were Senegalese, the source said. The suspected rebels made off with some 4 million CFA francs ($8,400) in cash from the bank.

The MFDC has fought a long-running bush war for independence in the mostly-Christian southern region of predominantly Muslim Senegal.

Its revolt has fed on resentment among the southern Diola people against the Wolof, Senegal's dominant ethnic group, who have traditionally wielded more economic and political clout in the capital Dakar. ($1 = 478.9400 CFA francs)

Long Exposure Photographs Reveal How Lovers Sleep

I'm such a wild sleeper than sometimes I wake up in the most awkward of positions. Face planted, facing the wrong direction, diagonal, on the completely other side—you name it, I've woken up in it. I was always wanted to know my movement patterns. Photographer Paul Schneggenburger created a photography series that showed long exposure pictures of lovers asleep. You can see who the big spoon is! Computer games didn't cause American Presidents to kill | KitGuru

Harrison

Around twice a year, some group will call for an end to computer games on the basis that they cause violence and the industry rallies to deny the claim. Today?s the day. KitGuru plays Angry Pigs at full volume to build up a bit of latent aggression. You know. Just in case it makes us feel like getting on a tube train and umbrellering commuters to death.

Diane Franklin is a Republican congresswoman who believes that hardcore computer games should carry a special tax to help the federal government fight against mass shootings. We checked, and she does not seem to have proposed a special tax on the guns or bullets that are used to kill children in mass shootings. Strange.

Her call was followed up by a chap who professes a green agenda, Ralph Nader, but who?s certain that EA et al are ?virtual child molesters?.

Interesting.

Vice President Biden launched a multi-million dollar investigation into the links between ?stuff we do in society? and the ?urge to randomly kill strangers? and concluded that there was no scientific evidence linking computer games to shootings.

Wow. Who?d a thunk it.

Ever keen to ?apply the science?, KitGuru did a quick scan on US sites on ?The Top Murders of All Time? and came up with this list:-

  1. Lizzie Borden
  2. Ed Gein
  3. Ted Bundy
  4. Charles Manson
  5. Mary Bell
  6. Black Dahlia
  7. Albert DeSalvo
  8. Myra Hindley
  9. Ian Brady
  10. Andrea Yates

In typical self-centred fashion, the author of the list seems to have missed out The Roman Empire, Genghis Kahn, Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein.

From what we can tell ? none of these people ever engaged in Saints Row or other exciting games.

The CEO of EA, John Riccitiello, has been chatting about the complete lack of evidence linking games to murder. Specifically, he decided to cover the topic on a conference call with bank analysts. He correctly put it down to a ?perception issue?.

On the subject of perception, if you?d like to see NRA (gun-loving National Rifle Association) members heckling the grieving father of a 6 year old boy as he pleads for tighter controls on assault weapons, try this link.

Back to the headline?? OK. Our research has shown that of the 4 Presidents that were involved in the killing of people themselves (outside of war), a staggering NONE of them were avid EA fans. Surprising, given that when Washington killed, he led a group of Indians into the fray and watched while they tore the scalps from their victims after.

But no computer games were involved.

Shocking.

How did people kill and wage war without electronic assistance for 2 million years?

Research shows that Presidents Jackson, Cleveland, Roosevelt and Washington all killed people (we're not going to include the wartime killings by Bush etc), but we can't find any evidence that they played computer games. Could something else be the cause?

.

KitGuru says: Having completed an intensive hour long study, we have concluded ? conclusively ? that there is far more danger of someone being a murderer if they have come in contact with some form of gun. In our list of the Top 10 Murderers or the famous ?killers from history?, we?re sure that NONE of them ever used a computer game ? let alone an EA product.

BSkyB will for the first time allow customers to watch its sports channels on a pay-as-you go basis for ?9.99 a day, the first time it has ever allowed access to prime content such as Premier League football without a Sky TV subscription.

The move is a radical departure for the company, which has spent the last 20 years using prime sports such as Premier League football to convince viewers to sign up for monthly packages of at least ?42.50.

BSkyB is to offer sports fans the option of watching unlimited sports content from all six of its sports channels on its new internet TV service, Now TV, for a 24-hour period for ?9.99.

BSkyB aims to build the popularity of Now TV, which launched with Sky Movies content in July, which it revealed has attracted 25,000 subscribers in the three months to the end of December.

The new sports offering will launch in the spring and aims to attract fans looking to watch a one-off event, such as a Formula One grand prix, England cricket match or Masters golf.

BSkyB revealed the initiative as its traditional TV subscriber service contiinues to show minimal growth, just 25,000 new customers signed up in the three months to the end of December. BSkyB has 10.33m TV customers.

The company, which reported six-monthly pre-tax profits up 7.5% to ?642m to 31 December, beat most analyst expectations, adding 132,000 broadband customers in the quarter to 31 December.

Consensus City estimates put broadband sign-up numbers at closer to 117,000. BSkyB has 4.2m broadband customers.

The number of customers taking high definition TV rose 93,000 to 4.56m of its total customer base.

A third of BSkyB customers now take a "triple play" of three services such as TV, broadband and line rental.

Revenue rose 5% to ?3.5bn in the six months to the end of December, with Sky pushing its interim dividend up 20% year on year to 11p.

Average revenue per user, a key metric monitored by analysts, rose ?24 year on year to ?568. Churn rose slightly from 9.6% at 31 December 2011 to 10.3% at the end of last year.

Detroit freeway crashes kill at least three

DETROIT (AP) ? Snow squalls, high winds and slippery roads led to a chain-reaction of crashes on a mile-long stretch of an interstate in Detroit Thursday, leaving at least three people dead and 20 injured.

Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw said visibility was poor when the mass of crashes happened on Interstate 75 on the southwest side of the city. The injured, including children, have been taken to hospitals, Shaw said.

SUVs with smashed front ends and cars with doors hanging open sat scattered across the debris-littered highway, some crunched against jackknifed tractor-trailers and tankers.

Motorists and passengers who were able to a get out of their vehicles huddled together on the side of the road, some visibly distraught, others looking dazed. A man and woman hugged under the gray, cloud-filled skies, a pair of suitcases next to them and a bumper on the ground behind.

"We're not sure of the cause," Shaw told The Associated Press. "Some witnesses said there were white-out conditions."

More than two dozen vehicles were involved in the pileups and scores of cars and trucks not involved in crashes were stuck on the freeway behind. Shaw said it could be hours before the freeway reopened.

Greg Galuszka was driving a fuel truck along I-75 when white-out conditions quickly materialized.

"I looked on my driver's side mirror, and I could see the trucks piling up back there," Galuszka said, pointing to a mass of twisted metal where vehicles had smashed into each other a short time earlier.

"Then, when I looked in my passenger side (mirror), is when I saw the steel hauler coming up," he said. "I just said my prayers from there and said, 'Please don't hit me.'"

Shaw said many people had to be pulled from their vehicles. Numerous fire engines and ambulances were at the scene.

The crash happened as a wave of snow and strong blustery winds reduced visibility across southeastern Michigan, said Bryan Tilley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oakland County's White Lake Township.

"There was a pattern of snow showers moving through the area in the midmorning hours," Tilley said. Nearby Detroit Metropolitan Airport had west winds at 20 miles per hour, with gusts to 33 mph around the time of the crash. The temperature of 24 degrees was about 30 degrees colder than a day before.

The crash happened near an elevated stretch of expressway where the road surface can cool quickly and make driving hazardous, Tilley said.

Self-Publishing Scams - Old and New - Passive Income Online

I?ve been around Internet Marketing for a number of years ? so I am?very?familiar with scams. ?What I?ve seen in the last 12-18 months is that some of those same spammier Internet marketers have moved on to self-publishing scams. That?s not a surprise, given the huge growth in self-publishing, ?it was indeed as predictable as a beer on a hot day.?

?

What does surprise ?me though, is that publishing has had self-publishing scams for longer than Internet Marketing has even existed. Vanity Presses who charge would-be authors thousands of dollars for the chance to see their book in print with the vague promise of the chance of future sales are not new.

?

It?s not really that surprising though when you think about. The psychology and the business opportunity, for the ethically-challenged, are very similar.?

?

Internet Marketing Scams?

?The details vary but this usually involves ranking a website(s) in the search engine results and making a money from a combination of affiliate sales, pay-per-click and pay-per-impression advertisers. It is a legitimate, even after last year?s changes with Google?s ranking algorithm, way to make money. The problem is the hype and over-promising of the marketers involved.?

?The Dream:?

  • people who can?t get a job or have lost a job and a have no idea how to start a business
  • low start up costs to online?bushinesses;?
  • the idea of working from home is a huge draw from many;
  • the idea of not having to deal with customers/bosses/colleagues on a regular basis is also very appealing;?
  • being able ?to run a business from a beach in Mexico or Thailand has it?s appeal?

The Reality:?

  • the technology can be easily made to look harder than it is;
  • the art of ranking in the search engines can be made to seem very magical, only the inner circle know the secretes?
  • people want to believe and they want to be have people telling them they will do alright;?
  • it?s so cheap to build websites online (about $10/year for a domain name plus the under $10/month hosting ) ? paying ?only? $300 or more a month for the same is crazy;?

The Scam:?

  • consistent income ? membership courses provide a much more stable income to theA-list bloggers ?than doing what is actually being taught;?
  • over the last 4-5 years many of the loop-holes exploited by these approaches have been closed by Google, you are up against one of hte world?s largest employers of bright PhD?s.?
  • if you look at the track record of the ?guru? ? you will see very little believable disclosure of their own income, and little evidence of a track record in selling anything except Internet Marketing programs.?
  • there is often a high-pressure, closing-soon, rah-rah-rah, approach, which minimizes the chance for prospects to ask sensible questions or consider the implications of what is on offer before they sign up.?
  • much of the information come from other beginners in the same forum ? rather than the ?expert?. This results in a lot of mis-information and myths.?
  • almost none of these memberships sites actually run experiments to see what does work in a changing environment
Koh Chang - Thailand Beach

Thai Beaches Have a Lot toAnswer For

Publishing Scam ? Traditional Version?

?The Dream?

  • to see your book on the shelves of your local bookshop?
  • to be recognised as An Author?
  • rack in millions, quit day job, write more, possibly from a beach in Mexico or Thailand

The Reality:?

  • it?s always been hard to get?published?- there have always been more authors wanting toe publishing than books publishers can afford to publish.?
  • there is often a mis-match between what an author wants to write and what a publisher can sell?in sufficient quantity?to make a profit?
  • as Amazon re-creates the publishing industry more and more physical bookshops are closing and fewer books are being published by traditional publishers.?

The Scam:

  • you will pay many thousands of dollars for an often all inclusive package with will include book design, editing, formatting, printing and publicity. In reality what you get will be cheap out-sourced services from second rate service providers, and a few print-on-demand books with a couple of press releases thrown in to?sweeten?the deal. You could do it all yourself for maybe 10% of the cost.?
  • In the worst case you may also have difficultly removing your book from the company, un-authorized?charges to your credit cards and non-payment of any royalties due to you.?
  • You are highly unlikely to see the?subsidiary?press sell any copies for you.?

Self-Publishing Scams ? 2013 Version?

?Self-publishing is definitely a gold rush industry at the moment, plus?traditional?publishing is going through very hard times. ?Even before the Kindle eReader, Amazon was a disruptive force in the industry, with Kindle, and eBook sales in general booming, the landscape is being re-written.?

?

It?s not a surprise then to find some of the?biggest names in publishing?are getting onto this particular scam ? possibly as a?desperate?act to save their under-threat business model. Simon Schuster launching a new self-publishing arm called Archways Publishing. The unwary may be tempted to hand over the up to $22,000 they are charging in the belief they will be in S&S?s catalogue and bookshops will stock them. No and no.?

?

Here?s The Reality ? For the Wannabe-Authors

?If you want to ?just write? and not bother with the whole marketing thing ? then make sure you have a well-paying career, or a generous partner. Even trad published authors need to be involved in publicity and marketing campaigns. They do book signings, media interviews. Increasingly they are expected to be active in social media.?

?

If you self-publish ? then it?s all up to you: you have total control. ?Don?t therefore sign an incomprehensible contract and hire a ?self-publishing company? ? because ? let?s face it ? that?s kinda a contradiction. YOU are?self-publishing. You can?t delegate that over-all control to someone else. You get to take?responsibility.?

?

Which doesn?t mean that you have to do it all yourself. In particular I think most would agree that we don?t have the skills to:?

  • design covers;
  • edit our own work (even if you can edit others).?
Many others will choose to outsource book formatting, and may hire a virtual assistant to help with the admin and the social media. Most of us who are in business don?t do it without a book-keeper or an account and many have access to a lawyer.?

?

Here?s The Reality ? For the Internet Marketers?

?Your product is key. All the promotional skills in the world won?t get you very far if your book is rubbish. For all it?s flaws, the Amazon review system still works. You can pay for or get your mates to provide all the 5-star reviews for the launch, but once the real punters leave their 1-star reviews it will go awfully wrong.?

?

?Which is not to say you have to be an awesome writer, or even prepared to become one. Ghostwriting has long been a legitimate profession and htere is nothing wrong with paying someone for their words and then putting your name on it. But if you are paying 0.01c/word for an English-as-a-second-language writer ? then see my comment above about quality.?

?

Gaming Amazon in terms of getting fake reviews, or even genuine reviews, from mates, is a short-term game, which Amazon has already started closng down. It?s now against the Kindle Publishing Terms of Service for authors to review other writer?s books. Joining a paid forum or other online group and then reviewing each other?s books just makes it even easier for Amazon to find and remove the reviews in question. And yes they have bannned people before for abusing their platform ? look to see that increasing in the future.?

?

?Last Words?

?Basically self-publishing a book and making money from it is entirely possible the success stories are true. They are also the minority. It?s not?easy?to do this successfully. I?m certainly not selling enough to retire that Thai beach quite yet. It is however, in my not-so-humble opinion, one of the most exciting times in all of history to be either a writer or an online entrepreneur.?

Confirmed: How plant communities endure stress

Thursday, January 31, 2013

Ecology is rife with predation, competition, and other dramatic "negative interactions," but those alone do not determine the course life on Earth. Organisms sometimes benefit each other, too, and according to the Stress Gradient Hypothesis, their "positive interactions" become measurably more influential when ecosystems become threatened by conditions such as drought. Ecologists have argued about the hypothesis ever since Brown University ecologist Mark Bertness co-proposed it in 1994; Bertness says a large new global meta-analysis he co-authored in Ecology Letters definitively shows that it is true.

The evidence, principally analyzed by former Brown visiting graduate student Qiang He of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, comes from 206 studies of 727 shifts of plant interactions amid varying degrees, or gradients, of stress on six continents. Examining the data from each paper and contacting original authors when necessary, He determined the overall trends across the many experiments.

In the vast majority of studies, as stress increased, the significance of interactions shifted toward mutual support in that positive interactions, such as those that promoted neighbors' survival, strengthened in influence, and negative interactions, such as those that hindered neighbors' growth, weakened. In some studies, stress did not change interactions, but negative interactions never increased as stress did, no matter what kinds of plants were involved, what kinds of conditions they were under, or where they were.

"Our results show that plant interactions generally change with increased environmental stress and always in the direction of an outright shift to facilitation (typical for survival responses) or a reduction in competition (typical from growth responses)," the authors wrote in the paper published online. "We never observed an increase in competition at higher stress. These findings were consistent across fitness measures, stress types, growth forms, life histories, origins, climatic zones, ecosystems and methodologies."

Analyses of studies of grasses, trees, and shrubs, for example, found that despite the obvious differences among these plant types, they all shifted toward less negative or more positive interactions.

"Typically, highly competitive species [e.g., grasses] have decreased competitive or neutral effects at high stress, whereas less competitive species [e.g., trees] have strong facilitative effects at high stress," the authors wrote.

Overall, the researchers found, studies with observations of greater degrees of stress increase ? "longer" stress gradients ? also observed greater degrees of shift toward positive interactions.

The hypothesis and the importance of positive interactions in ecology began to occur to Bertness in the 1970s and 1980s. As a junior faculty member at Brown, along the shores of Rhode Island, he noticed that seaweeds and barnacles would never survive the heat stress above the tides in isolation. They could only persist in groups, suggesting that with stress, organisms were better off together ? despite their competition ? than apart.

It's the same reason why sparsely planted gardens wilt in hot, dry conditions while more densely planted gardens survive. Mutually beneficial soil shading becomes more important than competition for that soil moisture when it becomes scarce.

Bertness published the Stress Gradient Hypothesis in Trends in Ecological Evolution with Ray Callaway, then a graduate student at the University of California?Santa Barbara. Callaway is now a professor at the University of Montana.

A shift in research?

Nearly two decades later with so much evidence now assembled, Bertness said, ecologists should feel confident enough in the Stress Gradient Hypothesis to employ it as a "rule of thumb." Rather than continuing to debate whether the hypothesis is valid, he said, researchers could now focus on crafting experiments to probe how much predictive value the hypothesis has and test its applications to conservation biology.

The hypothesis suggests, for example, that marine ecosystem managers who want to help tropical fish should focus on sustaining foundational species in the ecosystem, such as corals. With the ecosystem's foundation shored up the natural tendency among species toward greater positive interactions under stress should allow the fish to weather stress better.

"We're no longer in the casual, earlier stages of ecology," Bertness said. "In our lifetimes we're watching Caribbean coral reefs die, kelp forests die, and salt marshes and sea grass beds being decimated. We need to figure this stuff out quickly. These are no longer intellectual arguments without consequence."

In other words, with nature under stress, Bertness hopes that He's efforts to pull together the available data will lead ecologists to pull together so that they can apply the guidance the hypothesis provides.
