A Brief Discussion on Lunch Boxes

What are Lunch Boxes?

Lunch boxes are bags designed for packing lunch or snacks usually for work and school. Also called lunch kits, lunch boxes are commonly seen in schools where children pack their foods. Lunch boxes were brought into existence in 19th century.

How Lunch Boxes were Invented?

A Lunch box is named such as it is actually a box that is used to pack a lunch. This was devised when laborers in ancient times are preoccupied on their workplaces, and there is not enough time to go back home and eat their meals. Before the creation of metal and plastic lunch boxes, foods are hoarded in handkerchiefs, paper bags or cellophane; although, some still make use of paper bags at present. Earliest lunch boxes were metal pails and candy tins.

The first character lunch box (a Mickey Mouse lunch box) was created by Geuder, Paeschke and Frey in 1935. Lunch box with lithographic images began in 1953. Sales on lunch boxes spiked until it slowed down in 1970?s.

What are the Different Features of Lunch Boxes?

Available in different colors and designs, lunch boxes can be a personal touch such as imprinting names on it. Lunch boxes are usually with handles or zipper and are made up of vinyl or plastic. They are mostly rectangular and square in shape. At present, there are insulated lunch bags available for keeping foods warm until lunch, whilst some have gel packs where you can take some coolers such as yogurt and juices in school. In addition, innovative lunch boxes have been introduced to the market such as those lunch kits that can be stored directly in the freezer until it is ready for school and can preserve the coolness or coldness of food for about 10 hours! Meanwhile, some people are fond of collecting lunch boxes as a form of pleasurable pastime.

What are Eco-friendly Lunch Boxes?

Eco-friendly lunch boxes are non-toxic, safe alternatives to plastic-made lunch boxes.

On the other hand, a health concern that has risen about lunch boxes is the contention on vinyl lunch kits. The Center for Environmental Health found out the lead content of lunch boxes, not to mention those manufactured from China. From then on, lunch boxes today are screened and tested for lead and other harmful chemicals before they are marketed. Most of the lunch box manufacturers labelled their products with lead-free.

Federal Government's Plan to Turn Foreclosures into Rentals ...

If I had money to invest, it would go right into the housing market. Chicago real estate values are hovering around their 2001 levels, and interest rates are at record lows. The time to buy is now.

Of course, being upside-down in my own mortgage, I am in no position to be investing in the market right now. But if you are, it is about to get even more appealing for you.

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama and the Federal Housing Finance Agency unveiled the first phase of a program aimed at adding more rental units while lowering the foreclosure rate in some of the country?s hardest-hit metropolitan areas, including Chicago.

The Real-Estate Owned (REO) Initiative would allow qualified investors to purchase pools of foreclosed properties as long as they rent out the properties for a certain number of years. This should provide additional rental options to markets that need it while lowering the volume of foreclosed properties in the nation?s hardest-hit areas.

?This is an important step toward increasing private investment in foreclosed properties to maximize value and stabilize communities,? said FHFA Acting Director Edward J. DeMarco.

The federal government said interested investors can ?pre-qualify? to be part of the program in this initial pilot phase and subsequent phases.

The pool of properties for sale during the pilot phase will include rentals, vacancies and non-performing loans, mostly in America?s hardest-hit cities.

According to the National Multi Housing Council (NMHC), this decade could see more than seven million new renter households. To keep up with this rate, 300,000 apartments should be created each year, yet last year less than 150,000 were started due to the ailing economy.

?The President?s proposal underscores our key message that while there might be an oversupply of single-family housing, there is a shortage of rental housing. Demographics and changing lifestyles have led to a structural shift in our nation?s housing preferences to more heavily favor renting,? said Cindy Chetti, NMHC Senior Vice President of Government Affairs.

?The apartment industry remains supportive of efforts to find the bottom in the single-family housing market because it will help fuel overall economic and jobs growth, which are critical to our industry. We are pleased to see the Administration explicitly recognizing the importance of rental housing in meeting our nation?s housing needs through the Real-Estate Owned (REO) Initiative announced today.?

Senate clears way for vote on insider-trading ban (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Some members of Congress want to include executive branch employees in a bill that would ban lawmakers from using nonpublic information to made stock trades. The bill also would require public reporting of new securities transactions within 30 days, all part of an effort by Congress to boost its dismal approval ratings that are now in the teens.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor told reporters Tuesday that if the bill now before the Senate isn't expanded to include the executive branch, he would add that provision to a bill expected to receive a House vote sometime in February.

A Senate amendment proposed by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., would include the executive branch.

"Why would this rule not apply to executive employees in the administration?" Coburn asked.

Actually, parts of the bill already apply, but not the 30-day reporting requirement.

Standards of conduct for the executive branch prohibit government workers from "engaging in financial transactions using nonpublic information, or allowing the improper use of nonpublic information to further private interests." Senior executive branch officials must publicly file annual financial disclosure reports ? the same as members of Congress and their senior staff.

It was unclear when the Senate would be ready to vote on the legislation.

U.S. lawmakers already are subject to the same penalties as other investors who use non-public information to enrich themselves, though no member of Congress in recent memory has been charged with insider trading. In 2005, the Securities and Exchange Commission and Justice Department investigated then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's sale of stock in his family's hospital company, but no charges were ever brought against the Tennessee Republican.

Voters may believe lawmakers who are paid an annual salary of $174,000 are enriching themselves ? especially if those voters saw a segment of CBS' "60 Minutes" in November. The show questioned trades by a House committee chairman, the current speaker and his predecessor's husband. Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., all denied wrongdoing. Bachus chairs the Financial Services Committee.

A recent Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll of registered voters found 56 percent favored replacing the entire 535-member Congress. Other polls this year have given Congress approval ratings between 11 percent and 13 percent, while disapproval percentages have ranged from 79 percent to 86 percent.

The bill is titled the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act. President Barack Obama has endorsed it.

The Senate bill would prohibit lawmakers from tipping off family members or others about non-public information that could influence a stock's price, in addition to the explicit ban itself. And it would direct the House and Senate ethics committees to write rules that would make insider trading violators subject to congressional punishment.

[from Chapter 2, pp. 25-38:]
The iconoclastic Irish physicist John S. Bell had long nursed a private disquietude with quantum mechanics. His physics teachers?first at Queen's University in his native Belfast during the late 1940s, and later at Birmingham University, where he pursued doctoral work in the mid-1950s?had shunned matters of interpretation. The "ask no questions" attitude frustrated Bell, who remained unconvinced that Niels Bohr had really vanquished the last of Einstein's critiques long ago and that there was nothing left to worry about. At one point in his undergraduate studies, his red shock of hair blazing, he even engaged in a shouting match with a beleaguered professor, calling him "dishonest" for trying to paper over genuine mysteries in the foundations, such as how to interpret the uncertainty principle. Certainly, Bell would grant, quantum mechanics worked impeccably "for all practical purposes," a phrase he found himself using so often that he coined the acronym, "FAPP." But wasn't there more to physics than FAPP? At the end of the day, after all the wavefunctions had been calculated and probabilities plotted, shouldn't quantum mechanics have something coherent to say about nature?

In the years following his impetuous shouting matches, Bell tried to keep these doubts to himself. At the tender age of twenty-one he realized that if he continued to indulge these philosophical speculations, they might well scuttle his physics career before it could even begin. He dove into mainstream topics, working on nuclear and particle physics at Harwell, Britain's civilian atomic energy research center. Still, his mind continued to wander. He wondered whether there were some way to push beyond the probabilities offered by quantum theory, to account for motion in the atomic realm more like the way Newton's physics treated the motion of everyday objects. In Newton's physics, the behavior of an apple or a planet was completely determined by its initial state?variables like position (where it was) and momentum (where it was going)?and the forces acting upon it; no probabilities in sight. Bell wondered whether there might exist some set of variables that could be added to the quantum-mechanical description to make it more like Newton's system, even if some of those new variables remained hidden from view in any given experiment. Bell avidly read a popular account of quantum theory by one of its chief architects, Max Born's Natural Philosophy of Cause and Chance (1949), in which he learned that some of Born's contemporaries had likewise tried to invent such "hidden variables" schemes back in the late 1920s. But Bell also read in Born's book that another great of the interwar generation, the Hungarian mathematician and physicist John von Neumann, had published a proof as early as 1932 demonstrating that hidden variables could not be made compatible with quantum mechanics. Bell, who could not read German, did not dig up von Neumann's recondite proof. The say-so of a leader (and soon-to-be Nobel laureate) like Born seemed like reason enough to drop the idea.
