India, China Battle for Maritime Influence

AP Photo

India has made a number of moves in recent months to strengthen its ?Look East? policy. As noted earlier this week, Delhi has offered Vietnam a credit line of US$100 million to purchase four patrol boats that will undoubtedly be used to resist Chinese inroads in the South China Sea. The follows Vietnam?s India-born Foreign Minister, Pham Binh Minh?s trip to Delhi earlier this month, where he participated in the 15th Joint Vietnam-India Commission meeting. While in Delhi Pham Binh Minh also gave an important speech outlining Hanoi?s vision for regional security, as well as India?s important role within it.

Ancient Battle: Rome (by Hunted Cow Studios & HexWar)

Game Info

Ancient Battle: Rome is the first in a series of stunning wargame simulations covering the Ancient Era. Ancient Battle: Rome is yet another classic iOS wargame from Hunted Cow and Hex War, the developers behind the top-selling iOS wargames Tank Battle: North Africa, Civil War: 1863 and Tank Battle: 1944.

In Ancient Battle: Rome you are able to fight the battles between ancient Rome and its many opponents. Each campaign is themed around eight battles contesting a geographical region. The Roman legionary may well be the power unit of the period but all too often they are outnumbered by hordes of barbarians.

The unique game system was designed by a team including a winner of the Ancients competition at the World Wargaming Championships. Designed from the ground up to give a unique wargaming experience on iPhone and iPad, players can use Roman legionaries, elephants, catapults, heavy and light cavalry, archers, slingers, fanatics, chariots and many more unit types to engage in classic battles.

Included in the initial release is 'Caesar?s Campaign in Gaul' culminating in the classic siege of Alesia, and the campaign between Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great. Players can also purchase an additional campaign of the invasion of Brittania with the highlight of Queen Boudicca's demise at the battle of Verulamum.

Upcoming expansions will include the battle for Germany where the Romans lost three legions in the Teutoburger forest, the battles against Mithradates the Great in Pontus, and the infamous Parthia campaign where a whole Roman army perished in the desert. These later campaigns will also add fully armoured cataphracts, light cavalry archers, scythed chariots and the Greek Pike Phalanx to the game system.

Ancient Battle: Rome is due for release on iPhone, iPod and iPad in August 2013!

(AP) ? Israeli and Palestinian teams headed to Washington on Monday for preliminary talks on resuming formal negotiations after five years of stalemate.

Both sides emphasized that many obstacles stand between them and a final deal on setting up a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Talks will be complex, said Israel's chief negotiator, Tzipi Livni. She said she was heading to the Washington meetings, which are to begin later Monday, "cautiously, but also with hope."

Hanan Ashrawi, a Palestinian spokeswoman, said the upcoming talks are being held under more difficult conditions than previous negotiations. She cited the Palestinian political split, with Western-backed moderates and Islamic militants running rival governments, and the more hawkish positions of Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, compared to his predecessor.

"But I think there is a recognition of the urgency," she said. "If we don't move fast and decisively, things could fall apart."

The preliminary talks in Washington were made possible after Israel's Cabinet on Sunday agreed in principle to release 104 long-held Palestinian prisoners, convicted of offenses including the killing or wounding of Israelis and the killing of suspected Palestinian collaborators.

The prisoners are to be released in four stages, with each release linked to progress in negotiations.

The resumption of direct Israeli-Palestinian contacts was a result of six months of shuttle diplomacy by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

UN rights expert says Syria is in 'free fall'

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The head of the U.N. commission investigating human rights abuses in Syria says the country is in "free fall" and has become a battlefield where civilians are the main victims of "acts of terror" from indiscriminate shelling to rape and sectarian killing.

Paulo Pinheiro told the U.N. General Assembly Monday that "massacres and other unlawful killings are perpetrated with impunity" ? most by pro-government forces and some by anti-government armed groups.

He demanded that the government stop using imprecise weapons such as unguided missiles on civilian areas, and said both sides must stop laying siege to cities and towns, cutting off vital supplies of food, water, medicine and electricity.

Pinheiro said the international community must demand a diplomatic solution to the 2 1/2-year conflict that has killed over 100,000 people.

The 16 most inspirational AFC personalities in NFL history - (Narcotics For Leatherheads (NFL) )

Eric Golub

MANHATTAN, July 29, 2013 ??Football is about more than dedication. It is about inspiration, getting men to be better than themselves when it matters most. Many lists contain the greatest NFL legends and the most fun characters. This is a list of NFL personalities who may have been both of those or neither. They are simply the most inspiring, often due to their deeds unrelated to the football field.

With that, here are the 16 most inspiring NFC personalities of all time, one for each franchise.

Green Bay Packers: Vince Lombardi? In addition to being the greatest coach of all time and the man the Super Bowl trophy is named after, he inspired excellence in his players as football stars and as citizens. Whether one was black, Jewish, gay, or any other individual, all he cared about was that his men were dedicated to their God, their families and the Green Bay Packers in that order.

Chicago Bears: Brian?Piccolo/Walter Payton?Cancer took Piccolo?s life at age 26, reducing Gale Sayers to tears and inspiring the movie ?Brian?s Song.? Payton became the all time leading NFL rusher and then died himself at age 45 after suffering a crippling disease. The ?NFL man of the year award? dedicated to community service and sportsmanship is named in Payton?s honor.

Detroit Lions: Mike Utley/Reggie Brown? Both of these men suffered career ending injuries that had grown men crying on the field. Utley in particular inspired the crowd when he gave the ?thumbs up? gesture after being carted off the field.

Minnesota Vikings: Jim Marshall? For 19 seasons and 282 straight games, this iron man of football played in ice and snow and motivated his teammates to keep up with him.

New Orleans Saints: Steve Gleason? The greatest blocked punt in NFL history in 2006 lifted an entire Gulf region reeling from Hurricane Katrina. He now is suffering from the debilitating ALS, but he still penned a 4,000 word football column using only his eyes and new technology.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Derrick Brooks? The orange creamsicle ?Yucks? were long the cornerstone of pro football until he arrived in 1995. Soon after came ?Pewter Power,? and now the term ?Tampa 2? is synonymous with one of the all time great defenses.

Atlanta Falcons: Deion Sanders?Football is supposed to be fun, and ?Prime Time? took a losing Atlanta franchise and made it must see television. He did plenty of showboating but backed it up on the field.

Carolina Panthers: Sam Mills??The Field Mouse? left us at the age of 32 after a losing battle with cancer. A statue of him sits outside of Carolina Stadium as a reminder that what matters is the size of a man?s heart.

Philadelphia Eagles: Reggie White/Jerome Brown? The subjects of a tear-jerking ?A Football Life? documentary will remain in Philadelphia hearts forever. White died at age 43 from sleep apnea while a car accident took Brown at age 27. Every year the fans hope for a Super Bowl so they can ?bring it home for Jerome.?

New York Giants: Wellington?Mara? The late owner was with the Giants for 80 of his 89 years. He was beloved by everybody, and the NFL would not be anywhere near as profitable or important without him.?Honorable mention:?Bill Parcells

Washington Redskins: Doug Williams? In 1987 he?became the first black quarterback to ever win a Super Bowl, throwing four touchdown passes and forever putting to rest the notion that a signal caller?s ability had anything to do with skin color.

Dallas Cowboys: Roger Staubach?A devout Christian who served America in the Navy, Staubach got his teammates to believe in him. ?America?s Team? won because with Staubach at the helm, they were always given the chance to win.

Cleveland/Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams: Kurt Warner? In the 1990s he was a clerk stocking shelves at a grocery store who needed canned goods from the local church to feed his family. In 1999 he came from nowhere and led ?The Greatest Show on Turf? to a Super Bowl title. He then took 10% of his new multi-million dollar contract and tithed it to his church.

San Francisco 49ers: Joe Montana??Joe Cool? kept everyone relaxed at the most pressure packed moments. His coolest moment came in the 1988 Super Bowl with the 49ers down by three points with three minutes left and 92 yards to go. He looked at his teammates and said, ?Hey, that?s actor John Candy in the stands. Cool.? Then he drove the 49ers to the win.

Chicago/St. Louis/Arizona Cardinals: Pat Tillman? He gave up a multi-million dollar NFL contract to become an $18,000 a year Army Ranger. He died from friendly fire in Afghanistan, but after 9/11 he was determined to find meaning in life.

Seattle Seahawks: The 12th man?The team actually retired the number 12 jersey as a tribute to their fans. The Kingdome was a house of horrors for opposing teams, and the players often credited the decibel level in the stands for some important victories.

(AP) ? Brek Shea sure knows how to make an entrance.

Just 42 seconds after coming into the game as a substitute Sunday, Shea pounced after Landon Donovan whiffed a shot and poked the ball into the net. His goal in the 69th minute gave the United States a 1-0 victory over Panama and the CONCACAF Gold Cup title. It is the fifth Gold Cup title for the Americans, but their first since 2007. It also is the first international title as a coach for Jurgen Klinsmann, who won the 1990 World Cup and 1996 European Championship with Germany.

"It doesn't matter who scored today," Shea said. "We won."

The U.S. is doing a lot of that lately.

This was the 11th straight victory for the Americans, four more than their previous record, and they likely will leapfrog Mexico as the best team from the North and Central America and Caribbean region when the next FIFA rankings come out Aug. 8.

When the final whistle sounded, the Americans on the field began celebrating while the rest of the team raced off the bench. Several players jumped up and down, and hugs and high-fives were exchanged. Klinsmann, who watched the game from a luxury box after being suspended for his tirade over the officiating in the semifinal, quickly made his way down to the field, pumping his fists in the air as he walked.

"They wanted to send out a signal that they are the best group in CONCACAF, and they are," Klinsmann said. "For today."

But their performance in this tournament is likely to stay with the Americans for a while. At least until the next round of World Cup qualifying in September. Not only did they outscore opponents 20-4 in the tournament ? no other team had more than 11 goals ? but they showed they are deeper than they've ever been, with one young player after another stepping up.

And one veteran, too.

Despite his big whiff, Donovan was selected the tournament MVP. He finished with five goals and seven assists, a particularly impressive performance considering it followed a four-month sabbatical over the winter that cost him his place on the national team.

"In terms of just having fun, it's up there," Donovan said. "I'm just enjoying being part of it, I really am."

Though Klinsmann picks his roster based on form, not reputation, he acknowledged it would be almost impossible to leave Donovan off the roster for the next round of qualifying.

"He deserves every compliment for this tournament," Klinsmann said.

The only disappointment for the Americans was the loss of Stuart Holden with another right knee injury. Holden sprained his knee early in the first half, and while he will have further tests, Klinsmann said after the game that "it's not looking good."

"We are very, very sad for him," Klinsmann said. "We are very concerned about Stuey's situation. It looks like a very serious knee injury."

While most expected a Mexico-US final, Panama had other ideas, upsetting El Tri twice on the strength of its stingy defense. Panama was just as dogged against the Americans early, crowding Donovan and Eddie Johnson and not giving the U.S. any space.

But rather than taking wild shots or trying to force things, the Americans stayed patient.

"At times it may have been a little slow or been going back and forth, but we stuck to the game plan," Besler said.

And as the game went on, the Americans began to break Panama down. They finished with three shots on goal and another eight that were off target ? six in the second half alone. Their best chance came in the 56th minute, DaMarcus Beasley chipped a ball into Donovan, who was in front of the goal at the near post. Donovan got his head on the ball, but not at the angle he wanted and it flew wide of the net. As the crowd groaned, Donovan threw back his head and Beasley swatted the red flag in the corner.

"We were all hopeful, we all wanted to win," Panama coach Julio Dely Valdez said. "But we all go away feeling we gave it our all. I said I wanted to walk away from the Gold Cup feeling good, and I do."

Shea replaced Joe Corona in the 68th minute, just as the Americans were pressing forward again. Alejandro Bedoya got the ball on his left foot and crossed to Donovan, who took a mighty swing ? and missed. But it was enough to throw goalkeeper Jaime Pendeo off, and when the ball rolled past Panama's Roberto Chen and on toward the net, Shea was ready. Parked inches from the goal line, Shea stuck out his left foot and tapped the ball into the net for his second international goal.

"I was there just to put it away," he said.

Asked if it was the quickest goal he'd ever had or the closest, Shea replied, "Easiest."

The Americans had a chance to double the lead in the 84th minute when Shea fed a wide-open Eddie Johnson 2 yards from the goal. But Johnson couldn't finish it, sending the ball flying over the cross bar.

But it didn't matter as Panama never threatened.

"I think they were rewarded today for the fantastic Gold Cup they played," Klinsmann said. "They put all their energy in that they had. They should be very, very proud of themselves."

National Treasury Employees Union Urges Members to Oppose Obamacare ? For Themselves

by Ryan Kierman, CNS News:

The National Treasury Employees Union is urging its members to oppose legislation that would force federal employees off their government healthcare plans and onto the state and national healthcare exchanges established under Obamacare.

Members of Congress and their staffers are already required to participate in the exchanges, which will go into effect next October 1st under the Affordable Care Act.

However, a bill (HR 1780) introduced in April by Rep. David Camp (R?Mich.) would extend that requirement to all federal employees, an idea that does not sit well with the union.

So NTEU is strongly urging its members ?? including the Internal Revenue Service agents tasked with implementing Obamacare ? to oppose Camp?s legislation, which would compel them to personally participate in the same healthcare program they will be enforcing.

Evolution on the inside track: How viruses in gut bacteria change over time

[unable to retrieve full-text content]The digestive tract is home to a vast colony of bacteria, as well as the myriad viruses that prey upon them. Because the bacteria species vary from person to person, so does this viral population, the virome. By closely analyzing the virome of one individual over two-and-a-half years, researchers have uncovered new insights on the virome can change and evolve -- and why the virome of one person can vary so greatly from that of another.

American woman among 80 killed in Spain train crash; driver detained

Almost everyone on board the train that hurtled off the rails in Spain was either killed or injured. ?Five Americans, in Europe for their daughter's wedding, were among the wounded. NBC's Keir Simmons reports.

By Catherine Chomiak, Becky Bratu and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

The driver of the train that crashed in Spain, killing at least 80 people including one American, was detained and put under formal investigation Thursday after security video showed the train derailed after speeding around a tight curve.

Excessive speed has been identified as the likely main cause of the accident, official sources told Reuters as hospitals treated dozens of injured passengers, including at least five Americans.

via Facebook

A Virginia woman was among those killed in the derailment. Ana-Maria Cordoba worked as a benefits specialist for the Arlington Diocese.

After the train derailed on the curve, where the speed limit was 49 mph, the driver, identified as 52-year-old?Francisco Jos? Garz?n Amo?by Spanish daily El Pais, spoke by telephone with the train operator's emergency service: "I should've been going 80 [49 mph] and I was doing 190 [118 mph]," he said.?

A Virginia woman was among those killed in the derailment, NBCWashington.com confirmed. Ana-Maria?Cordoba worked as a benefits specialist for the Arlington Diocese.

Cordoba was traveling with her husband and daughter, now listed in stable condition at a local hospital according to the?Catholic News Service.?

Robert and Myrta Fariza of Houston, Texas, and Stephen Ward of Bountiful, Utah, are among those who survived the crash.

Robert Fariza said that with only a few minutes left until his destination, the train was travelling at a high speed.

"Where everyone started knowing something had gone wrong was the fact that it started to flip," Fariza said. "Once it took that curve, it just took just like an 18-wheeler, so it took a very strong curve for it to flip over, and that's what actually happened in our car."

CCTV video captured the horrifying moment that a train derailed in Spain Wednesday, killing dozens of people and injuring scores more.

Fariza said the train car he and his wife were in flipped over.

"It became chaos, things flew and everything, it was sudden darkness and I was kind of thrown on one side of the train and that's why I'm kind of all kinds of beaten up here, and my wife, unfortunately, she was sitting on the side where the train flipped over, so everything kind of fell on her," he said.

Myrta Fariza was hospitalized in critical condition.?

Fariza was able to come out of the wreckage, where a horrifying scene awaited.?

"There was dead people everywhere, unfortunately, and right next to me there was a young man who had died right there," he said.?

Stephen Ward,18, had?traveled?to Spain for a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mission trip.

?I remember the train going very fast round a sharp bend and then bags flying off the overhead baggage shelf,? Ward told UK's?The Daily Telegraph from his hospital bed in Spain.

"It was like a scene from hell. I thought I was dreaming. There was blood everywhere, my own and other people's. And bodies were being carried out ? Some were already dead and others looked like they were about to die,? Ward said.

Scores are killed and injured in a train derailment in NW Spain.

?I have messed my neck up real bad and have stitches in four places on my head and face, but by the sounds of it I am just real lucky to be here,? he said.

President Barack Obama said in a statement that "the American people grieve with our Spanish friends."

Spain has declared three days of national mourning over the crash, Europe?s worst mainline rail accident for more than 25 years. The death toll has climbed to 80 and could rise further, Galicia regional officials told Reuters and AFP.

The horrific moment when the express train left the tracks on Wednesday night was captured on security video obtained by Spain?s El Pais newspaper.

Images from the scene showed bodies covered in blankets and towels lying next to toppled and crushed carriages as rescuers worked to pull survivors out of broken windows.

The driver - one of two in the cab at the time of the crash - has been put under formal investigation and was being held in custody in the hospital where he is being treated, the Supreme Court of the Galicia region said in a statement, according to Reuters.

"The judge has ordered the police to take a statement from the driver," the court said.?

State train company Renfe said the driver was a 30-year veteran of the firm with more than a decade of train driving experience.?

El Pais cited sources close to the investigation saying the driver stated immediately after the crash that he had been traveling at 118 mph on the curve, which had a speed limit of 49 mph.

Trapped in his wrecked cab, he reportedly told supervisors over the radio: "We're human! We're human," according to El Pais. "I hope there are no fatalities because they will fall on my conscience,"?he said, according to the newspaper?s source. NBC News was unable to immediately confirm the report.

A State Department official said it had been confirmed that a U.S. citizen was killed and five had been injured. "These numbers may change as we receive additional information."

Obama said he and his wife Michelle were ?shocked and saddened? by the derailment.

?On behalf of the American people, we offer our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families and loved ones of the more than 80 people who lost their lives,? he said.?

A group of volunteers waiting to give blood to help those injured in the train accident close to Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Wednesday.

?We extend our wishes for a full recovery to those who were hurt. We also offer our heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Spain and to the rescue personnel who are working to locate the missing and treat the injured ... Today the American people grieve with our Spanish friends, who are in our thoughts and prayers.?

He added the United States was ready to provide ?any assistance we can in the difficult days ahead.?

Pope Francis, who is currently visiting Brazil, sent his condolences and message of support to the bishop of Santiago de Compostela.

"Filled with deep pain, I ask your Excellency to please let those who have suffered know of my closeness to the their families, my fraternal affection and my personal solidarity, assuring them of suffrages for the deceased and a complete and total recovery for all those who have been so terribly distressed," the pope's message read.

All the bodies had been removed from the wreckage by Thursday morning.

Mar Linares, 42, from the Galician city of La Coruna, told Reuters that her 15-year-old son Marco, who was travelling from Madrid on the train, was in intensive care.?

"He was trapped by train wreckage but he managed to pull a hand free and that was how he was found. He says there was a lady on top of him who had been travelling with a little girl, and the lady was dead," she said at the hospital.?

Tomas Lopez, whose wife and two children were travelling on the train, told Reuters that "the worst thing is the uncertainty, I feel desperate"?as he searched for them at Santiago University Hospital.

"My daughter is OK but I don't know where my wife and son are. My wife brought them from Madrid to see museums and such... I have been looking for them all night from one place to another," he said, tears rolling down his face.?

So many local residents lined up to donate blood that officials were forced to open additional donation points.

Spain's prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, declared three days of national mourning after visiting the site.

"The scene is shocking, it's Dante-esque," the head of Spain's Galicia region, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, said Wednesday night in a radio interview, according to Reuters.

Some 94 people were injured, of whom 35 were in a serious condition, including four children, the deputy head of the regional government said.?

The crash, which happened at 8:41 p.m. local time (2:41 p.m. ET) Wednesday, was Europe?s deadliest mainline train accident in more than 25 years and Spain's worst in four decades.

It also cast a shadow of tragedy over the entire Galicia region, which had been due to celebrate a public holiday Thursday.

Santiago de Compostela had been preparing for the festival of St. James, when thousands of Christian pilgrims from around the world pack the streets. It is likely the train was packed full with people traveling for the holiday.

Officials said all of the celebrations, including a traditional High Mass at the city?s centuries-old cathedral, were canceled.

The eight-car Alvia express train was traveling from the capital, Madrid, to the city of Ferrol when it derailed about two miles short of Santiago de Compostela station, national train operator Renfe said in a statement.

Spain?s rail network is one of the most modern and successful in Europe, following decades of public investment.

Transport expert and author Christian Wolmar said it was not clear if high-tech safety systems, which override inputs by the driver, would have been in use at the time.

?On high speed lines, the European Train Control System should automatically correct the speed of the train, but this accident may have happened on a stretch of line which is not designated as high-speed,? he said.

Rail workers? union SEMAF expressed ?support for the comrade who has been implicated in this accident? as well as ?condolences? to the victims, according to RTVE.

The crash is Spain?s biggest disaster since the 2004 terror attack at Madrid?s Atocha station that left 191 dead, and its worst train crash since 1972 when a collision left 86 dead.

Brinley Bruton, Jason Cumming and Elisha Fieldstadt of NBC News, and?Reuters contributed to this report.?

Another dangerous Friday looms for Egypt

The Egyptian military has called for mass protests Friday to show support for its decision to depose President Mohamed Morsi, turning up the heat on what is already a boiling and dangerous social and political situation.

The rhetoric within Egypt both for and against Mr. Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood has grown violent and threatening. Dehumanizing language from Muslim Brotherhood opponents ? "terrorist scum," "traitors," "foreign puppets" ? is now being matched by calls from Brotherhood supporters for "jihad" to restore Morsi's rule.

Mao may have said that political power grows from the barrel of a gun, but army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi isn't taking any chances. He's adding mass protest to the arsenal.

But it's hard to see any result from the large-scale demonstrations he's asking for beyond a more divided Egyptian public and more deaths. And as if the situation wasn't tense enough, a statement was issued on a Facebook page that Al Jazeera says is "affiliated with" the Egyptian military "today saying the army stands ready to turn its guns "against black violence and terrorism which has no religion or nation." (Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly called it an "official" page). This should be taken as a threat to the Muslim Brothers to keep their supporters off the street tomorrow, since "terrorist" has become a favorite epithet in state media broadcasts ? and among secular-leaning activists ? for the movement.

RECOMMENDED: How much do you know about Egypt? Take this quiz.

Gen. Sisi hasn't been exactly coy about that. In his speech yesterday, snappy in his dress uniform and shades, a veritable army of commendations and medals marching over his left breast, he said he needed a mass outpouring of support to "give me, the army and police, a mandate to confront possible violence and terrorism so that in case there was a resort to violence and terrorism, the army would have a mandate to confront this." The people opposing him have been the Brothers.

Morsi has remained under military arrest since the military took charge on July 3, and the Muslim Brotherhood has held daily protests against the coup, demanding Morsi be restored to power. Earlier this month roughly 50 Muslim Brotherhood protesters were gunned down by the military outside the Republican Guard barracks and on Monday, both Brotherhood supporters and opponents engaged in a gun battle at Tahrir Square in the heart of Cairo.

Sisi may be hoping that another mass demonstration for what is an overwhelmingly popular coup will lead the Brotherhood to back down. But the movement has been backed into a corner, and is paranoid and angry now, as are many of its opponents. If demonstrations are met with demonstrations, violence results and the military does indeed crack down hard on the Brothers, what then? They remain Egypt's largest grass roots movement and while they may have lost the support of millions of Egyptians, they still have the support of millions, and have organizational skills that their rivals lack.

If they become convinced the only option open to them is political surrender, the chances that they'll turn to greater violence will increase. And while a likely next move for Sisi will be mass arrests of Brotherhood figures in the wake of tomorrows demonstrations, the Brotherhood survived for decades against torture and indefinite detention by the Egyptian military. The role of the defiant and resilient outsider is one the Brotherhood is most comfortable and experienced at playing.

Sarah Carr has a good view from the ground on how the Muslim Brotherhood ? due to its own arrogance and incompetence, and a slick media campaign ? has become a "terrorist" organization in the public's eye, and on how an Egyptian public that wanted the Egyptian military out of politics in early 2011 now appears to be clamoring for a paternalistic general to lead them again:

At some point between the end of June and today, allegations that the Muslim Brotherhood is a terrorist organization stopped being allegations and became facts. It was a gradual process, like watching a photograph develop ? the outlines slowly became clearer, and the picture emerged. Two groups laid the groundwork for all this: The Muslim Brotherhood, and the media. The Brotherhood, with its obstinate hubris and desperate attempts for attention, with its traffic-paralyzing marches and the inevitable confrontations they provoke... It was mostly the privately owned satellite media and newspapers that became the army?s court jester, or at least did so with the most gusto. Logos appeared on screens insistently informing viewers that June 30 was a popular revolution, not a coup. Then the terrorism rhetoric began, and the pro-Morsi protesters were no longer just a bunch of skin-disease ridden, cult supporting lunatics, but also terrorists. Again, this happened almost seamlessly. Television presenters indulged themselves in the vilest xenophobia against Palestinians and Syrians, who they claimed were camped out in pro-Morsi sit-ins and meddling in Egyptian affairs.

It doesn't end there. Egyptian social media is filled with wild conspiracy theories that the Muslim Brotherhood are foreign agents controlled by the US, or Hamas, or Iran ? sometimes even all three together. Xenophobic passions have been stirred to such an extent that it seems the definition of "Egyptian" is "he who agrees with me" and "foreigner" means "everyone who doesn't."

Shows of bravado from the Brothers also aren't helping matters. "Prepare for a second of jihad," senior Muslim Brotherhood member, Mohammed al-Beltagi, urged protesters on Wednesday in response to Sisi's call for mass rallies. Though he also urged supporters to remain peaceful, the religious choice of words can't be ignored.

More clashes seem inevitable in Egypt tomorrow, and that almost certain violence will make the real task for Egypt ? finding some kind of national consensus on a constitution, on fresh elections, a way out of the paralysis of street politics and fury ? even harder than it's been since Mubarak was ousted in February 2011.

Ditched Windows Phone for a Z10 today!

In the CrackBerry forums we typically hear about users switching to BlackBerry from iPhone or Android and not so much Windows phone, but one of our new members?beachhoppr did just that. In what is nearly a live blog of his first few days with the BlackBerry Z10,?beachhoppr has given a play-by-play of his pros and cons with the Z10 as compared to Windows Phone (most recently the Lumia 810).?

I really enjoyed reading over the thread both for the posts from beachhoppr learning all about BlackBerry 10 and for all of the awesome CB members that are jumping in to help out and offer up tips for a brand new user.?

Love this phone! Wife unhappy with my obsessionbeachhoppr, CB Member

So far beachhoppr has fallen in love and has a slight Z10 obsession?- and we wouldn't?expect any less. ?He loves the Active Frames, Hub and overall speed and has already begun sideloading a ton of apps, noting BlackBerry has WP killed in this category!

He has also made a few comparisons to Windows Phone thus far.

Comparisons so far:

  • Keyboard goes to BB
  • Hub goes to BB! Love this
  • Camera speed goes to BB
  • Battery life still under test
  • Screen tied
  • Intuitiveness gotta give it to WP out of the box
  • Apps WP wins at the moment
  • Live tiles vs Active frames...gotta go with live tiles
  • Style...ooh I dig the utilitarian BlackBerry form factor
  • Navigation goes to WP...only 2 screens to deal with
  • Speed...phew...BlackBerry by a hair
ok just discovered peek and compact sidebar! awesome!beachhoppr, CB Member

In his first post if the thread he asked,?"Am I a crazy person??" We can assure you beachhoppr that the only crazy thing is that you didn't switch sooner. It's always a tough decsision when it comes to picking the device that's best for you, and while you've obviously been through quite a few devices over the years, we're more than happy to have you on Team BlackBerry.?

We'll take any and all BlackBerry lovers here - not matter what device you've come from. We especially love fans as excited as you are. So welcome to CrackBerry!

Ford says it's hiring more salaried workers

DEARBORN, Mich. -

Ford Motor Company will hire an additional 800 salaried employees for a total of more than 3,000 salaried employees in 2013.

The new hiring represents a 36 percent increase over the original projection of 2,200 additional salaried jobs announced in January.

With only a 2.7 percent attrition rate, the majority of these jobs are new.
This salaried hiring initiative is the largest since 2000, and is necessary for Ford to meet increased demand for its products and continue its aggressive global growth. Ford?s U.S. market share is
up almost a full percentage point from last year, and the company reported its best June sales since 2006, fueled by share gains on the east and west coasts and surging demand for Ford
Escape and Ford F-150.

Of the 3,000 new jobs, 2,400 will be technical professionals who will work in product development, manufacturing, quality, purchasing and information technology. Ford is halfway to its goal of hiring the 3,000 salaried employees this year. Felicia Fields, Ford group vice president for human resources, says the company is still looking for people who are ?interested in working for a diverse global leader in a huge growth mode? to fill the more than 1,500 positions that remain.

?Engineers and technical professionals are in as much demand as our cars, trucks and SUVs,? says Fields. ?Global demand and increasing capacity in North America and Asia requires that
we aggressively seek out technical professionals in order to continue our growth.?

While the 3,000 jobs will be based in the U.S., many of these positions will have a global impact as Ford continues to expand around the world to meet surging demand for its cars, trucks and
SUVs.

Information regarding open salaried positions and Ford?s hiring process can be found at www.careers.ford.com.

All-new recruiting campaign
Ford has launched an all-new recruiting campaign with a large social media element titled ?The Distance Between You and an Amazing Career Has Never Been Shorter.?

Careers advertising image

The campaign encourages candidates to bring their talents to Ford and contribute to serving customers through ingenious solutions.
?We created the campaign to align with Ford?s global brand promise and highlight that when you join Ford you will become part of a team already leading the way in imagination and creation,?
says Fields. ?We want a fresh and innovative image that reflects Ford and what we stand for.?

The new initiative will engage job candidates on the three major social sites the company uses for recruiting ? Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, as well as the corporate careers website.
?The type of talent we want at Ford are often searching for and evaluating potential employers on social media sites, so expanding our recruiting efforts on these channels ensures we have a
strong presence throughout their selection process,? says Fields. In addition to the all-new social media campaign, Ford also is increasing its presence on college campuses.

Pawn Star Married: Rick Harrison Marries DeAnna Burditt in California (VIDEO)

July 22, 2013|7:54 pm

Pawn Star, Rick Harrison, has married girlfriend DeAnna Burditt Sunday night in Laguna Beach, California.

Harrison, who is famed for his role behind the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, featured on the History Channel's popular show Pawn Stars, married Burditt in a "sunset ceremony" at the weekend.

Reports claims that Harrison and Burditt were joined at the ceremony by Harrison's three sons and three daughters, and that the family was also joined by 180 other guests.

Harrison's Pawn Star cast friends were also in attendance, with Chumlee reported to be the ring-bearer.

The wedding ceremony was also officiated by Counting Cars star, Danny Koker.

This is the third marriage for both 47-year-old Harrison and 37-year-old Burditt.

Pawn Stars is filmed in Las Vegas, Nevada, where it chronicles the daily activities at the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, a 24-hour family business opened in 1989 and operated by patriarch Richard "Old Man" Harrison, his son Rick Harrison, Rick's son Corey "Big Hoss" Harrison, and Corey's childhood friend, Austin "Chumlee" Russell.

The show, which became the network's highest rated show, and the No. 2 reality show behind Jersey Shore, debuted on July 26, 2009. Reruns can be seen on History as well as its sister network Lifetime, which added the show in December 2010.

Broncos Von Miller faces suspension for violating NFL policy

broncos-miller-football-suspension

NFL.com?s Albert Breer reported Monday that Broncos linebacker Von Miller is facing a four-game suspension, per a source apprised of the situation. The case currently is under appeal, and it?s unclear what policy Miller violated. Miller?s father told The Denver Post that Miller will have a statement on the matter in the coming hours.

The league has yet to comment. The Broncos told NFL.com and NFL Network they?re aware of the report but can?t comment because of the confidentiality of the league?s policies. ESPN?s Adam Schefter first reported the story.

The news comes just one week after the Broncos suspended two top personnel executives, Matt Russell and Tom Heckert, for DUI arrests. Miller?s potential suspension would be even more damaging.

New Canadian Army insignias to pay for themselves, military says

OTTAWA ? Changes to Canadian Army insignia will cost about $245,000 but the military is hoping the move will pay for itself over a five-year period.

The Conservative government announced July 8 that Canadian Army rank insignia, names and badges would revert to their traditional forms; the army would replace the maple leaf rank designation on the uniforms of officers with traditional ?pips? and Crowns. The ranks of non-commissioned officers will return to the original designations that were in place during the First and Second World Wars. Those were based on the British Army.

The move follows the Conservative government?s push to re-introduce symbols of the British monarchy to Canadian military organizations. The cost of its 2011 move to reinstate the word ?royal? back into the titles of the navy and air force, as well as changing the name of Land Force Command to Canadian Army was around $1 million.

The latest changes will be phased in over a four to five year period as new uniforms are replaced.

What exactly the new insignias will look like hasn?t been finalized, according to the military.

Army spokeswoman Capt. Melina Archambault said that it is estimated the changes will cost around $245,000. But since the changes will save approximately $53,550 per year, they will pay for themselves in five years, she added. The money being saved is because the new insignia is a pin-on as opposed to a uniform change.

?The cost of promoting an officer will be reduced from an individual tailoring and braid procurement cost of approximately $33.00 per promotion to a cost of approximately $5.00-$6.00 for a pair of metal stars or crowns that pin-on like the current metal rank badges for non-commissioned members,? she said. ?Based on the average number of promotions and new hires each year, the annual steady-state cost savings is estimated at $53,550.?

The move has received mixed reaction. While some veterans have hailed a return to traditional insignia of the First and Second World Wars, others have pointed out that a whole new generation of Canadian soldiers fought and died under the more recent type of insignias and ranks.

Last week, the army?s new commander, Lt.-Gen. Marquis Hainse, announced that the army would also adopt a new primary badge, visual identifier, and tag line.

The new primary badge of the Canadian Army is based on one used prior to the unification of the Canadian Forces in 1968, the military notes.

It will feature crossed swords and three maple leaves.

The visual identifier, derived from the primary badge, will feature a crown atop the maple leaves and swords, as well as the words ?Canadian Army? in both official languages. The new tag line for the army is ?Strong. Proud. Ready.?

Nokia Lumia 625 leaked, suggests 4.7-inch display, 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 5-megapixel cam and LTE (update)

DNP Nokia Lumia 625 leaked, suggests 47inch display, 12GHz dualcore processor and 5megapixel rear camera

It looks like that "Something Big" that Nokia was hinting about earlier this morning might turn out to be the Nokia Lumia 625, if this leak by Finnish publication Puhelinvertailu is to be believed. The specs appear to match what was revealed a few days ago on China's certification site; it'll apparently sport a 4.7-inch Gorilla Glass 2 IPS WVGA (800 x 480) LCD, a 1.2-GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 512MB RAM and a 2,000mAh battery. The leak also hints at a rear 5-megapixel camera with 1080p recording, a front-facing VGA shooter, Bluetooth 4.0 LE and interestingly, an LTE variant with support for European bands (though we wouldn't rule out North American support later down the line). It's difficult to say exactly how the phone will actually look like up close, however, so it's a good thing we'll be up bright and early tomorrow at 9am UK time (4am Eastern) to see Nokia's unveiling.

Update: An additional image of the alleged Nokia Lumia 625, which we've embedded after the break, has just surfaced on @evleaks' Twitter feed. Unfortunately, this latest render tell us nothing new about the handset apart from Nokia's continued design practice of colorful polycarbonate shells.

Update 2: @evleaks isn't done posting Lumia 625 pics just yet apparently, as he's just tweeted yet another render of Nokia's latest, but this time in a cascading arrangement. You can take a look at it after the break.

Update 3: Yep, there's another one.

Mercy College Alum To Lecture At Disaster Preparedness Camp

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Mercy College alumnus Virginia Ross, a specialist in disaster survival, will return to the Dobbs Ferry campus on Aug. 8 to speak to students participating in the school's Disaster Preparedness Camp.

The Title V Step Up to STEM summer program engages students by demonstrating the relevance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in real-life scenarios.

?We are excited to have Virginia (Ross) demonstrate first-hand the relevance that STEM fields, particularly psychology, play in disaster preparedness," Mercy College?s Title V STEM Grant Project Coordinator Carolina Hernandez said. "It?s wonderful that she is a Mercy College graduate. I can?t think of anyone better than a successful Mercy College STEM alumna.?

Ross, who graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, specializes in how to prepare families for a disaster through her business and lecturing programs.

?My goal is to educate everyone on the importance of taking a pro-active approach and being self-reliant for whatever may come your way," Ross said.
Ross said that as an Emergency responder for The Red Cross, she has seen firsthand the perils of not being prepared.

"Research has proven that people who are mentally prepared are much more likely to survive a disaster and will recover from it more quickly," Ross said.
The free camp is open to high school seniors, college freshmen and sophomores, and students pursuing STEM majors, including psychology.
For more on the Mercy College?s Disaster Preparedness Camp, log on to the college website or call 877-MERCY-GO.

Young military men and women are becoming more common targets of consumer fraud and identity theft.

Military officials say service personnel are often convinced to take out unnecessary loans or open multiple credit accounts.

Having bills and accounts open in so many places because of relocation can cause people to be vulnerable to identity theft, which is often difficult to recover from.

Anybody that has had their identity stolen [knows] it can take a long time to get everything straightened out," says Carey Snipes, a Personal Financial Program Manager. "To prove to credit reporting agencies, as well as to the lender, that you're not the one that took out the loan in the first place, that in and of itself is a very distracting thing to have going on. It's very emotional."

Experts say we should all protect ourselves by checking our credit scores regularly, keeping up with accounts, and using credit sparingly.
