French court clears Continental of Concorde crash

VERSAILLES, France (Reuters) - Continental Airlines was cleared on Thursday of criminal responsibility for the Concorde crash in Paris in 2000 that killed 113 people, with a French court also absolving a mechanic at the U.S. airline of involuntary manslaughter.

The appeals court ruling, over a decade after the accident that helped to spell the end of the supersonic airliner, found Continental civilly responsible, opening the door to compensation payments to the families of those killed and to the Concorde's operator, Air France .

Rejecting an alternative scenario presented by the airline's lawyer, the court confirmed that the crash was caused by a metal strip that fell from a Continental DC-10 aircraft onto the runway just before the Concorde took off.

The court found that Continental welder John Taylor had flouted industry norms and used titanium to forge the piece, which shredded the Concorde's tire, causing bits of rubber to damage the plane's propulsion system and spark the fatal fire.

However, it ruled that this was not criminal - as neither Taylor nor Continental could have predicted the devastating result. It overturned his 15-month suspended prison sentence.

"During 12 years, we have wrongly accused an airline. The trial concluded today and finally we have the truth," said Continental's lawyer Olivier Metzner.

Continental, now part of United Continental Holdings , had been ordered under the original ruling to pay 70 percent of any damages payable to families of the victims. Airbus parent EADS - the successor to Aerospatiale, the French half of the Concorde manufacturer - would have to pay the other 30 percent.

The crash sped up the demise of the droop-nosed Concorde - the fastest commercial airliner in history and a symbol of Franco-British co-operation - as safety concerns coupled with an economic downturn after the September 11 attacks in 2001 drove away its wealthy customers.

The Air France Concorde, carrying mostly German tourists bound for a Caribbean cruise, was taking off from Paris on July 25, 2000, when an engine caught fire.

Trailing a plume of flames, it crashed into a hotel near Charles de Gaulle airport. All 109 passengers and four people on the ground died.

After modifications, the plane returned to service but its operators, Air France and British Airways, retired it in 2003, citing high operating costs and a drop in demand.

Thursday's ruling found that Concorde had been left in service for too long due to "political pressure" surrounding the prestigious but unprofitable aircraft. It did not provide further details.

Concorde's wings and the landing gear were never modified despite a string of incidents in the 1980s and 1990s, it said.

Worse Than Bedbugs, It?s the Couch Itself

Last week, millions of Americans ceremoniously started the Holiday Gorge by putting off their diet and exercise resolutions as they helped themselves to another (and another?) slice of pie. Then, with the grace of an elephant in a tutu, they plopped triumphantly onto their favorite couch to bask in the bliss of their food comas. And while you?d have to be living in the most absurd bubble not to know that these types of lifestyle decisions ? overeating, eating the wrong things, not exercising enough, and repeating day after day after day ? are what?s killing most of us, many of us are not aware of another legitimate threat to our modern-day struggle to survive: it?s that couch you collapsed on.

See, when you sank down into the cushy goodness of your TB117 labelfavorite couch or chair, your freshly fed derriere forced the air out of those foam cushions and with it came a poof of dust. Ever wonder what?s in that dust? If pressed to answer what makes up the couch foam we sit on, most of us would shrug our shoulders and reply it?s foam and air, but most of us would be dead wrong. As it turns out, there is a third component very few of us know about: our couch foam is up to 11% by weight flame retardant chemicals. And according to two new studies released today in Environmental Science and Technology, these chemicals are not necessarily guests you?d have invited into your home for Thanksgiving or otherwise. One such chemical, Tris, was banned from children?s clothing in the 1970s because of concern over its ability to cause cancer, one is the globally-banned pentaBDE, a known hormone disruptor and neurotoxin in animals. And still others are completely untested for safety, despite structural similarities to known carcinogens and other toxic substances.

So back to that poof of dust displaced by your tush. The flame retardants in your couch foam don?t stay put; in fact, these pesky chemicals perpetually migrate out and are found in high concentrations in household dust (as if dust bunnies weren?t sinister enough). If it were as simple as sweeping this dust under the proverbial rug, that would be that. But blood samples confirm that these chemicals are making their way into our bodies. In 2004, Americans had more than 15 times the levels of pentaBDE in their systems than Europeans. And toddlers have 3 times the levels of adults. PentaBDE was phased out of furniture foam in 2004, but discouragingly, it is being replaced with our old friend Tris (see fig 1). Meanwhile, the option to purchase flame-retardant-free furniture is diminishing to essentially nothing.

graph of flame retardants found in couches 1984-present

Fig. 1: Following a 2004 phase-out of pentaBDE, a known endocrine disruptor and neurotoxin in animals, furniture manufacturers are increasingly meeting fire safety standards by adding the flame retardant Tris to couches instead. Tris was banned from children?s clothing in the 1970s because of concern over its ability to cause cancer.

Nobody knows what elevated levels of these chemicals in our bodies means for our long-term health, but there have been some studies that suggest it is particularly worrisome for pregnant women and their developing fetuses. Even if you?re not a pregnant woman or a fetus, with cancer deaths due to environmental pollutants responsible for an estimated 30,000 deaths per year (compare that to 2650 deaths on average in house fires annually), known carcinogens in large concentrations in your home are probably something to be aware of. If you are one of the millions of people who have purged plastics containing bisphenol-A (BPA) from your life because of concerns over its ability to mimic estrogen in our bodies (and do nasty things like increase the risk of breast cancer), there?s no reason you shouldn?t be concerned about flame retardant chemicals for similar reasons. Even more so since BPA is removed from your body quickly after your last exposure to the chemical. In contrast, many flame retardants accumulate in your body fat and stick with you for years.

The kicker in all of this is that these flame retardant chemicals added to our furniture foam don?t even do what they should ? that is, reduce risk of house fires, or increase our safety in the event of one. In the latter case, they may actually increase our risk; most fire deaths are due to smoke inhalation, not complications from burns, and flame retardants actually increase the amount of smoke and toxic gases. (In one study, pentaBDE doubled the smoke, created 7 times the carbon monoxide and 88 times the soot ? all for a three second delay in ignition). Not only that, but when the flame retardants do burn, they produce dioxins and furans, highly toxic compounds believed to contribute to the higher rates of cancer among fire fighters.

So how are flame retardants at preventing fires in the first place? Unfortunately the data there are damning as well. The current requirement for fire safety is set by a California standard, TB117, which states that furniture foam must withstand exposure to an open flame for 12 seconds before igniting. In theory, this sounds good, but in practice, furniture foam is almost always safely encased in fabric, which itself can have flame retardant properties without the use of added chemicals. In fact, a study conducted by the Consumer Products Safety Commission estimated that 85% of upholstered furniture would require no change to their product to meet fire safety standards for smoldering if the flame retardant chemicals were eliminated from their foam. And while fire safety proponents cite the decline in upholstered fabric fires since the addition of these chemicals into our couch foam, the decline also correlates beautifully with the decrease in smoking since the 1980s. And smoking is by far the leading cause of upholstered fabric fires.

Decline in smoking

Of the average of 2650 people who die in house fires each year in the United States, only 500 deaths are attributable to fires that were started on upholstered furniture. This begs the question: are we exposing ourselves, our children and our pets daily to known toxic chemicals to prevent the extremely remote chance that we will be killed in a house fire? Considering there are smarter, safer ways to protect our favorite couch from being a fire hazard, we need to reevaluate California?s fire safety standard that sets the nation?s standard and in so doing, provide alternatives for concerned consumers.

Fortunately, the governor of California has called for a revised furniture standard in 2013 that aims to improve fire safety without requiring the use of unsafe flame retardants. If the proposed changes are implemented, it should be possible to purchase fire-safe furniture without added flame retardants in the foam by next summer.

The Art of Tasting Wine with James Flewellen: Wine Tasting in a ...

by?James Flewellen?

?

Over the last few posts I?ve covered various aspects of wine tasting in some detail. We?ve looked at the appearance of wine, the aromas we find in white and red wines, the structure of the?wine on the palate and how to begin to assess the quality of the wine. This post summarises these ideas in a concise ?checklist?, which I hope you find a useful prompt as you explore new tastes and new wines.

Step 1: Appearance

What is the colour of the wine? Can you see through it? Tilt the glass and examine the?wine against a white background. Is there a change in colour, or ?gradient? along the wine?

Step 2: Nose

Tempranillo varietal wine bottle and glass, sh...

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

The nose is the aroma of the wine. Is it powerful or subtle? Complex or easy to describe? Does the?aroma change after swirling the wine? Does it evolve over time as the wine aerates or warms up? What can you smell? Is the wine primarily a fruity wine? What sort of fruits, and are they fresh, cooked or dried? Perhaps there are also other aromas: spices, grassy notes, herbs, wood, nuts, savoury/meaty aromas? Do any of these aromas remind you of other wines you?ve had before, or maybe indicate some age on the wine?

Step 3: Palate

We look for up to eight components of a wine when we taste. Firstly, the flavours: are these?the same as the aromas you can smell? All wines have perceptible acidity and alcohol, which give structure to the wine. Alcohol is a major component of the body of a wine,?which is how heavy or viscous the wine feels in the mouth. Red wines also have tannins, which provide additional structure. Some wines have perceptible residual sugar. The?evidence of maturation in oak may also be present in many white and red styles. Finally, the finish is how long the flavours and sensations of the wine linger in your mouth after?swallowing.

Step 4: The Conclusion

Wine tasting is a very personal thing. No-one else can tell you whether you like or dislike a?particular wine, or why you do. That said, there are certain features a professional wine taster looks for in assessing the quality of a wine (whether it suits their personal tastes or?not). These include:

  • Balance: is the overall perception of the wine flavours and structure in harmony?
  • Length: do the flavours persist for a long time or do they fall flat and short?
  • Intensity: are the flavours and aromas intense or a bit weak? Perhaps they are too?intense and overwhelming.
  • Complexity: is there a lot going on in the wine, or is it a bit simple and ?one-dimensional?.

Other things to think about are: When would you drink this wine ? by itself or would it be better with food??What sort of food? Is it good value for money? Is it ready to drink now? Or perhaps it will?be better in a few years. It might seem ?like a lot to take in but ultimately enjoying wine comes down to two things: Do you like this wine? and more importantly: Why is that?

RIM loses in arbitration with Nokia, may have to pay royalties on BlackBerrys with WiFi

Thorsten Heins of RIM and Stephen Elop of Nokia

Nokia and RIM already have a troubled history whenever they come into contact, so it's no surprise that what truces they do have are fraying at the edges. RIM just lost a Swedish arbitration proceeding where it tried to extend a 2003 patent cross-licensing deal with Nokia to include WiFi devices; the wireless technology isn't covered, the arbitrator says, and RIM now has to either pay royalties worldwide or risk seeing its devices yanked from the market. Nokia isn't wasting any time pressuring the team in Waterloo into coughing up -- it already has filings to enforce the decision in Canada, the UK and the US. RIM has so far turned down any comment, although it's more likely that their firm will cut a deal rather than risk a sweeping ban. Consider it another of the many hurdles for RIM to jump on the road to January 30th.

How Cell Phone Spy Software Works - Mobile Phones Reviews ...

We are deriving many benefits from the advancements in communication technology. Particularly the growth in mobile communication sector is phenomenal. The giant strides in mobile communication have shrunk the world and the emergence of smartphones with multiple uses has enabled us to work on the move. As there are always two sides to a coin, similarly the benefits of technology are associated with certain inherent risks.

To suggest an example, online banking has allowed the convenience to carry out banking transactions at any time, be it from home or from work. The bitter side of this facility is the increased phishing attacks. To prevent such technological crimes, you need to make use of cell phone spy software. Installing such software on your cell phones will protect your phone as well as safeguard the confidential information stored in the phone.

Functioning of Cell Phone Spy Software

The cell phone spy software functions as a tracking device or a bug. It works silently in the background and records all the details of the cell phone. By installing the spy ware on a cell phone, it would commence to function as a spy phone and enable you to review all the phone?s activities. There are dozens of such cell phone monitoring spy software available in the market. Popular among them include Mobile Spy, Mobistealth, Flexispy and Stealthgenie.

Installation of the software

To install spy software, you need to physically access the cell phone. Download your chosen spyware from its vendor website and physically install on the cell phone by following the steps outlined in the user guide. Once the installation is completed, the spy software will function stealthily and record all the activities of the cell phone and discretely transfer the same to the user account. This user account is provided at the time of purchase of the spy software. By logging into the account remotely, you can review all the recorded information.

Location Tracking

With the help of the cell phone spy software, you can track the location of your cell phone using the embedded GPS tracking. With the help of the GPS, you can track the location of your spouse, kid or employees and know about their whereabouts.

Calls tracking

If you suspect that your spouse is cheating on you, you can monitor his/her calls, mails and text messages using the cell phone spy software. The spy software maintains detailed logs enabling you to review all the phone?s activities. Call interception facility and spy call facility are also offered enabling you to listen in to the live conversations or place a call without detection. You can also keep a watch on your kids, teens and employees by tracking their cell phone activities. You can thus ensure the safety of your kids and identify the disloyal employees.

Remote locking and wiping of data

Installing the cell phone spy software helps in remotely locking your phone and prevents strangers from unlocking your phone. You can also wipe out your data remotely if the security of your phone is compromised.

With the rising cell phone threats, it is better to install cell phone spy software and protect oneself and family from any dangers.

Important Factors To Consider When Choosing A Cloud Backup ...

?The growing number of online backup providers has made it very difficult to choose the right provider that meets your business needs. This article provides a list of essential factors to consider when choosing the right cloud backup service for your business.

1. Simplicity

For any business, time is money. A reliable cloud backup system should offer the most simplicity when it comes to installation and use. Everything needs to be handled via a central, remote location so there is no need to install software on individual computers.

2. Complete data recovery

It is possible that your computer system will become corrupted unexpectedly. A reliable backup service should offer complete data recovery that allows you to recover or repair your entire system from the cloud. With today's internet speed, it should only take a few hours to complete a full data recovery.

3. Restore options

Ensure that the service also offers several restore options, such as restore from an older version, restore deleted files, and drag and drop restore. These options must be available for a mobile device or a web interface, and must also able to restore data or documents to their original location.

4. Block level backup

If the cloud backup service does not use block level backup technology, you should avoid it. Block level backup technology breaks up larger files into smaller file blocks. This technology allows you to only backup the modified file blocks, and as a result you save both time and bandwidth.

5. Speed

Backing up an entire computer is time-consuming. Make sure that the online backup service uses disk defragmentation technology, or other technologies to speed up the process. Keep in mind that a slow backup solution can significantly reduce productivity and efficiency.

6. Security

Security is very important to all businesses, so make sure that the service uses at least 256-bit encryption to secure your data.

7. Easy access

One of the main benefits of using online backup is the ability to access your data from anywhere. You should be given the ability to access your backup from mobile devices and a web interface. You must also be able to restore, view, edit and share your backed up data on the go.

8. Performance

Many people complain that their backup service slows down their computer performance. A top class online backup should never interrupt your work. The backup service should offer different performance modes such as presentation mode, battery mode or high performance mode. The backup service must be able to detect when the computer is in high or low load, so it can adapt the backup process without reducing computer performance.

9. Cost

Lastly, as a business owner you need to consider the cost of the?
backup solution, and should avoid cloud backup providers that have surprise or hidden fees. A flat fee would be more beneficial for businesses.? Author Bio:

U.N. atom agency says stolen information on hacker site

VIENNA (Reuters) - The U.N. nuclear watchdog said on Tuesday information stolen from one of its former servers had been posted on a hacker website and it was taking "all possible steps" to ensure its computer systems and data were protected.

The stolen information was contained in a statement by a group with an Iranian-sounding name calling for an inquiry into Israel's nuclear activities. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is investigating Iran's nuclear program.

The IAEA said the theft concerned "some contact details related to experts working" with the Vienna-based agency but it did not say who might have been behind the action.

A Western diplomat said the stolen data was not believed to include information related to confidential work carried out by the IAEA. One of the agency's tasks is preventing the spread of nuclear weapons.

The statement posted in the name of Parastoo (which in Farsi means swallow, the bird, and can also be a woman's name) included a large number of email addresses and called for the people to whom they belonged to sign a petition for an "open" IAEA investigation into Israel's Dimona reactor.

The statement dated November 25 and headlined "Parastoo Hacks IAEA" said: "Israel owns a practical nuclear arsenal, tied to a growing military body."

Israel is widely believed to have the Middle East's only atomic arsenal but neither confirms nor denies this under a "strategic ambiguity" policy to deter Arab and Iranian foes.

The country is outside the Non-Proliferation Treaty that would require it to forswear nuclear weapons and open up its reactor in the southern desert town of Dimona.

Israel and the United States accuse Iran of seeking to develop a nuclear weapons capability, a charge Tehran denies, and says the Islamic state is the main proliferation threat.

Iran and Arab states say Israel's assumed atomic arsenal threatens peace and security in the Middle East.

IAEA spokeswoman Gill Tudor said the agency "deeply regrets this publication of information stolen from an old server that was shut down some time ago".

Measures had been taken to address concern over possible vulnerability in the server, she said.

"The IAEA's technical and security teams are continuing to analyze the situation and do everything possible to help ensure that no further information is vulnerable," Tudor said.

Judge bows out of 'pink slime' suit over ABC ties

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) ? A federal judge has recused himself from presiding over a $1.2 billion defamation lawsuit against ABC because his daughter-in-law works as a producer on one of the network's morning shows.

Judge Lawrence L. Piersol recused himself from hearing the defamation lawsuit filed by South Dakota-based Beef Products Inc. against ABC because his daughter-in-law works as a producer on "Good Morning America."

The case has been reassigned to Chief Judge Karen Schreier.

Beef Products Inc. sued ABC in September over its coverage of a meat product called lean, finely textured beef. Critics have dubbed the product "pink slime." The meat processor claims the network damaged the company by misleading consumers into believing the product is unhealthy and unsafe.

Global first: Brit visits all 201 states without flying

A British adventurer has become the first person to travel to all 201 sovereign states in the world without flying, ending his four-year odyssey early Monday when he arrived in South Sudan, the world?s newest nation.

Graham Hughes has used buses, boats, taxis, trains, and his own two feet ? but never an airplane ? to travel 160,000 miles in exactly 1,426 days, spending an average of less than $100 a week.

?I love travel, and I guess my reason for doing it was I wanted to see if this could be done, by one person traveling on a shoestring,? Mr. Hughes tells the Monitor Monday by telephone from Juba, South Sudan?s capital. ?I think I also wanted to show that the world is not some big, scary place, but in fact is full of people who want to help you even if you are a stranger.?

Are you smarter than a diplomat? Take our Foreign Service Exam.

Hughes, 33, set out from his home in Liverpool in northern England on New Year?s Day 2009.

Since then, he has visited all 193 United Nations member states plus Taiwan, Vatican City, Palestine, Kosovo, Western Sahara, and the four home nations of the United Kingdom.

GUINNESS CONFIRMED

Guinness World Records have confirmed that Hughes, who has been filming the trip for a documentary and raising money for a charity called Water Aid, is the first person to achieve this feat without flying.

?The main feeling today is just one of intense gratitude to every person around the world who helped me get here, by giving me a lift, letting me stay on their couch, or pointing me in the right direction,? Hughes said Monday. ?There were times, sitting in a bus station in Cambodia at one in the morning, riding some awful truck over bad roads, when I thought, why am I doing this? But there was always a reason to keep going.?

Highlights were swimming in a lake of jellyfish in the Pacific archipelago of Palau, watching one of NASA?s last Space Shuttle launches, and dancing with the jungle tribes of Papua New Guinea.

?People asked me how I was going to get to Afghanistan or Iraq or North Korea, but they were the easy ones, you don?t even need a visa for Iraq, you just walk across the border from Turkey,? he says.

?The really tough ones were places like Nauru, and the Maldives and the Seychelles, island countries where there were also sometimes pirate threats.?

Are you smarter than a diplomat? Take our Foreign Service Exam.

To cross oceans, Hughes hitched lifts with cargo ships. He spent four days in an open fishing canoe from Senegal to Cape Verde, and was then arrested when he arrived.

Later, officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo jailed him for six days believing he was a spy.

?None of this put me off, it just made me more bloody-minded to succeed,? he says.

DEATH IN THE FAMILY

The hardest point, ?when I just wanted to give up,? he remembers, was after his older sister, Nicola, died from cancer two years ago at the age of 39. Hughes rushed home to see her before she died.

?She told me not to stop the trip, but I was at a real low point. I?d done 184 countries and had only 17 to go and I thought why not leave it there,? he says. The memory of his sister spurred him on, as did the people that he met as he traveled and the money he was raising for Water Aid, which works to bring clean water to people in the developing world.

?If you take everything that you know of the world from the news, it?s all the bad stuff and you get very paranoid that everyone is out to get you,? he says. ?But the most amazing thing to me is that everyone I met looked after me and I didn?t even know them.?

Hughes plans to stay in South Sudan only until Wednesday. But he will not then be flying home.

He says to ?keep in the spirit of the adventure? he will continue through Africa and across Europe by bus and boat, aiming to return home to Liverpool by ferry from Ireland in time for Christmas.

?Someone wrote to me and pointed out that this would be the trip of a lifetime for most people, but for me it?s essentially just the bus home,? he says. After a long rest, he says he will then begin exploring options to continue with a career in film-making.

Falling over fiscal cliff could slash $20 billion in U.S. business travel ...

If the U.S. economy falls over the ?fiscal cliff,? it would have an immediate and severe impact on U.S. business travel, according to new research from GBTA Foundation. The new report analyzes the business travel impact of expiring tax cuts and automatic spending reductions ? commonly referred to as the ?fiscal cliff? ? as well as the longer-term ramifications of leaving current levels of deficit spending unaddressed.

The report models the potential business travel impact of two scenarios ? one in which the fiscal cliff takes effect, and one where no changes are made to current tax and spending provisions.

Fiscal Cliff Scenario: If the fiscal cliff occurs, the U.S. economy would enter a recession. This would lead to a total loss of $20 billion in spending on U.S. business travel over the next nine quarters ? a 2.5% decline ? and a reduction of 32 million business trips.

However, the elimination of tax cuts and reductions in federal spending would lead to reduced deficits and lower interest rates over the long run, resulting in business travel spending and an overall economy that grows more quickly after absorbing the shock of the fiscal cliff.

No Fiscal Restraint Scenario: If all provisions of the fiscal cliff are eliminated or delayed indefinitely, business travel would experience more robust trip volume and spending as a result of stimulus from lower tax rates and continued government spending. In the near term, this scenario would lead to a cumulative loss of only 300,000 business trips and a gain of $5.5 billion in total business travel spending over the next nine quarters.

However, by 2014, much of the spending growth would be attributed to higher inflation. Larger budget deficits and growing debt will begin to take a toll, and business travel spending growth would continue to slow beyond the forecast horizon.

?Given business travel?s indispensable role in spurring economic growth, these findings dramatically illustrate the potential impact of the fiscal cliff on the overall economy,? said Joseph Bates, vice president of research at the GBTA Foundation. ?Falling over the cliff would set back the clock substantially for business travel and every other sector of the economy in the near term.

?This research shows that we must seriously consider both the near-term ramifications of the fiscal cliff and the long-term implications of expanding government debt,? said Michael W. McCormick, GBTA executive director and COO. ?Either way, the fiscal cliff is a wake-up call for leaders looking to craft smart economic policy going forward.?

The research, GBTA BTI? Outlook ? United States Special Report: Fiscal Cliff Scenario, was conducted through an analysis and econometric model used in the quarterly GBTA BTI? Outlook ? United States report and altered to reflect predictions in business travel spending and volume according to each of these potential outcomes.

Fire sweeps clothing factory in Bangladesh -- over 100 killed - World ...

Hasan Raza / AP

Bangladeshi firefighters battle a fire at a garment factory in the Savar neighborhood in Dhaka, Bangladesh, late Saturday.

By NBC News wire services

Updated at 5:20 a.m. ET: DHAKA, Bangladesh -- More than 100 people were killed as a fire swept through a garment factory on the outskirts of Bangladesh's capital, the chief of the fire brigade said Sunday.

The fire at the nine-story factory in the Ashulia industrial belt started on the ground floor late Saturday and quickly spread, trapping hundreds of workers.

"So far, the confirmed death toll is 109, including nine who died by jumping from the building," Mizanur Rahman, deputy director of the fire brigade, told Reuters.?

However, other sources earlier said the toll could be much higher.?Abu Nayeem Mohammad Shahidullah, director general of the fire brigade, told Reuters 120 bodies had been recovered. It was not clear if his count had been revised.

Fire department Operations Director Maj. Mohammad Mahbub told The Associated Press that?the nine-story factory was operated by Tazreen Fashions.

Witnesses said the workers, mostly women, ran for safety as the fire engulfed the plant, but were unable to come out through narrow exits.

"Many jumped out from the windows and were injured, or died on the spot," said Milon, a resident.?"We are appalled to see the charred bodies coming out of the factory since last night. It was an endless stream."

Mahbub said army soldiers and border guards had been deployed to help police keep the situation under control as thousands of anxious relatives of the factory workers gathered at the scene.?

Bangladesh has around 4,500 garment factories that make clothes for such ?brands as Tesco, Wal-Mart, JC Penney, H&M, Marks & Spencer, Kohl's and Carrefour.

Bangladesh is the world's biggest exporter of clothing after China, with garments making up 80 percent of its $24 billion annual exports.?

But safety standards at the factories are poor and not enforced strictly, causing scores of accidents each year.?

Saturday's fire was the worst in years, and rescuers and police said the death count may surpass any previous toll.?

Tourists trickle into violence-plagued W. Myanmar

MRAUK-U, Myanmar (AP) ? It was dusk in a corner of Myanmar recently shaken by some of the bloodiest sectarian violence in a generation, and a dozen Canadian tourists climbed to the top of a grassy hill, cameras ready to capture the sweeping view.

Moss-covered pagodas rose from foggy hilltops all along the horizon, their bell-shaped silhouettes dark against the blue sky. Birds flitted through lush treetops. A small throng of children played on a dirt road nearby.

From here, it was hard to tell anything was wrong.

Just six miles (10 kilometers) to the south, though, security forces have blocked roads to a village that was reportedly overrun last month by a frenzied mob of Rakhine Buddhists armed with swords and spears who beheaded Muslim civilians and slaughtered women and children.

Across western Myanmar's Rakhine state, the United Nations is distributing emergency supplies of food and shelter to terrified refugees who have fled burning homes. A nighttime curfew is in force in several townships, including Mrauk-U.

But none of that has kept a small but steady trickle of determined tourists from traveling here to ogle at the monuments of this region's glorious past.

"We heard the news before coming," Caroline Barbeau, a French-speaking social worker from Montreal, said of violence that has shaken the region since June, displacing 110,000 people from their homes.

But "we've had no problems," she said. "The people are very nice, very kind."

Asked what had touched her most, Barbeau turned pensive. "Their smiles."

Mrauk-U itself has been spared the bloodshed between Buddhist and Muslims that has scarred other parts of Rakhine state. It is calm, and for foreign tourists, safe. But the Muslims who once worked and traded here just a few months ago no longer dare set foot in the town, part of a worrying new pattern of segregation that has split the two communities.

What draws tourists to this remote place are its storied relics ? hundreds of them, scattered across the hilltops. Mrauk-U is the spiritual heartland of the Rakhine, the former capital of a now-defunct Buddhist kingdom that reached its height in the 16th century. The dynasty conquered a swath of mountainous territory along what is now Myanmar's western coast, waging major battles against rival empires ? including Muslims from Bengal.

Their descendants ? the Buddhist Rakhine and the Muslim Rohingya ? have been fighting and killing each other across this region in recent months.

The conflict centers around the question of nationality, scarce land, and some say, racism. The Rakhine consider the darker-skinned Muslims among them to be foreign intruders from Bangladesh, even though many have lived here for generations. The government denies the Rohingya citizenship, considering them "Bengalis." But Bangladesh does too, effectively rendering them stateless.

After three Muslim Rohingya men allegedly raped and murdered a Buddhist Rakhine woman in late May, violence rocked the state for a week in June, then again in October. In what may have been the bloodiest episode so far, a thousands-strong mob of Buddhists with spears, arrows and homemade guns overran the village Yan Thei, just south of Mrauk-U, razing most of it to the ground, according to Human Rights Watch.

Although the violence has subsided, tensions have not, and there are fears the worst is yet to come.

Which raises the question: Should any tourists be traveling here at all?

During Myanmar's half-century of military rule, which ended last year, only the most intrepid travelers made their way to places like Mrauk-U, and even then there was debate over whether traveling to the Southeast Asian country would bolster the oppressive junta.

But after the army ceded direct power last year to an elected but still military-dominated government, the new president embarked on a wave of widely praised democratic reforms, and the number of tourists skyrocketed.

The serene pace and historic legacy of places like this are a big part of the draw.

Even the route to Mrauk-U is worth the trip ? a slow, meandering boat journey up the Kaladan River past a timeless horizon of shimmering rice fields. Thatched bamboo huts rise from the water's edge on stilts. Oxen graze. Golden pagodas rise from green hills.

Philippe Grivel, a retired Frenchman traveling solo in Rakhine state, said he was afraid not of the potential for violence, but of the possibility of missing one of Myanmar's grandest historical sites.

After the fighting began, the government banned local travel agencies from taking foreign tourists to the region. But nothing has stopped individual travelers from making the journey, and special permits have been granted to some larger tour groups.

When Grivel emailed a hotel in Mrauk-U to inquire if it was possible to visit, they told him that if the authorities didn't turn him back at the airport in Sittwe, the state capital, he was free to come.

Explorateur, the Canadian tour agency that arranged Barbeau's travel and advertises three-week trips to Myanmar called "Light and Harmony," assured its clients the trip would be safe.

And it was.

"This is still a virgin country without many tourists," said another of the Canadian tourists, a francophone from Montreal who gave only her family name, Allard, because of security concerns. "It's magnificent."

The sightseers ? 12 tourists and one guide ? spent several days bicycling through Mrauk-U's quaint, crumbling streets. They visited the town market. They saw nothing disturbing.

Allard, though, was surprised to learn that one of Mrauk-U's monasteries is home to more than 700 Buddhist refugees, nine of whom had just walked there after hearing rumors that Muslims armed with Molotov cocktails were readying for an assault.

The tour group did not visit the monastery. But they did express concern over the violence. Allard called the recent bloodshed "horrible."

On the eve of their final day, the group toured Mrauk-U's most famous temple, a stone labyrinth called Shittaung. Also known as the "Temple of Victory," it was built in 1535 to commemorate King Min Bin's conquest over the 12 provinces of Muslim-dominated Bengal.

As a Burmese guide explained the temple's history, the group snapped photos of the ubiquitous stone Buddhas lined up inside its dim, maze-like hallways. Some strained their necks to gaze up at the elaborate royal artwork painted on the ceilings above.

Kyaw Zaw Tun, who works at the temple and lost a brother in the October clashes, said it would normally be full of local Buddhist pilgrims at this time of year.

But its halls are almost empty, its guest book filled with, on average, one or two foreign visitors a day.

Asked if Muslims had ever visited before the violence began, he shook his head with disgust.

Never.

"If they came in here now," he said, pausing to tighten his right hand as if it were a knife about to slice meat, "chop, chop, chop."

As he spoke, the Canadians walked out of one of the temple's stone doors, one by one. They then climbed to the top of a nearby hill beside Shittaung, pulled out bottles of mineral water, and watched the sun sink beneath the hills.

Toshiba adds IP protection to automotive MCUs | SMART Group

Toshiba has revealed a security module for automotive microcontrollers meeting?industry anti-hacking, anti-tamper and software theft standards.

Developed at the company?s automotive development centre in D?sseldorf, the Toshiba Security Module will be built into future generations of the company?s ARM Cortex-based automotive microcontrollers.

?The module?s firmware is, as a first release step, compliant with the Secure Hardware Extension (SHE) version 1.1 specification of the Herstellerinitiative Software (HIS), a technical collaboration between five leading German car makers,? said Toshiba.

Implemented in hardware with its own ?sub-CPU?, said the firm, the module has a symmetric AES-128 cryptographic engine along with ?other security elements?.

?Our TSM will help the automotive industry prevent intellectual property theft or manipulation, which is a significant threat as an increasing proportion of innovations in new car models are now software based,? said Klaus Neuenhueskes of Toshiba Electronics Europe. ?The security afforded by our SHE-compliant TSM will protect car owners against abuses such as tampering with odometer settings, or sub-standard servicing by unqualified agents.?

Software libraries will be released to support TSM-equipped microcontrollers, and updates to the module will track upcoming standards, said the firm, the EVITA Medium requirements, for example.

Samples are planned in Q2 2013.

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) ? Sometimes life is a fairy tale, even when it's a college basketball game.

Quinn Cook directed No. 5 Duke on its run to the championship of the Battle 4 Atlantis. But holding the MVP trophy Saturday night isn't what made this so special for him. It's what this run of three games meant to his mother.

"His dad and I eloped here 25 years ago," Janet Cook said. "This is like a fairy tale."

It gets better.

She was supposed to head back to work Saturday afternoon, but she stuck around for the championship game to surprise her son.

"It was great," Cook said. "My mom was supposed to go back to work. But she stayed for the game. I just wanted to play well for my team."

He did.

The sophomore guard scored 11 of his 15 points in the final 7:46, including the Blue Devils' last eight of the game, and they beat No. 2 Louisville 76-71 for the title.

"Respect is not something you can give. It's earned," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "I think since the Georgia State game, Quinn has earned the respect of everyone. What he did in the Kentucky game, everyone talks about a kid getting confidence. It's when a team has confidence in its point guard that you take off. This team has great confidence in Quinn and he has earned it."

Neither team led by more than four points over the final 10 minutes until Cook's final free throw with 6.7 seconds left made it 76-71.

Cook, who had six assists and just four turnovers against Louisville's pressure defense, was 4 of 8 from the field and made all six of his free throws. He started his closing run when he took a long inbounds pass from Mason Plumlee and scored to give Duke a 70-68 lead with 1:14 left. Every time the Cardinals scored, Cook answered. His biggest hoop was a running jumper with 3 seconds left on the shot clock that made it 72-67 with 27 seconds to go.

"I thought that play was one of the separators," Krzyzewski said.

Cook said the "coaches get mad at us for not shooting our shots. I hit the 3 and that got me going. Then I hit the runner. I just wanted to stay aggressive. I was open so I shot the ball."

Plumlee had 16 points and seven rebounds for Duke (6-0), while the other starters ? Ryan Kelly, Rasheed Sulaimon and Seth Curry ? all had 14 points.

Peyton Siva had 19 points for the Cardinals (5-1). He brought them back from an 11-point second-half deficit by scoring the first seven points of an 11-2 run that brought Louisville within 54-52 with 10:55 to play.

Russ Smith added 17 points for Louisville, which played without 6-foot-10 Gorgui Dieng. The shot-blocking center is out with an injured left wrist and his replacement, 6-10 Zach Price, scored the game's first basket, doubling his point total for the season. He finished with four points and three rebounds.

"We don't know if it's broken yet," Louisville coach Rick Pitino said. "If it's broken you'll get me disappointed. I don't want to know. I want to stay in an upbeat mode. Just tell me tomorrow."

Even though the game had two of college basketball's greatest coaches in Krzyzewski and Pitino, and was played in one of the world's playgrounds for the rich, it was the players who were the stars of the night.

"Siva and Smith are lights-out good players," Krzyzewski said.

The pace wasn't frenetic but it was upbeat. The work under the boards was rugged. There weren't many fans in the Imperial Arena, a grand ballroom turned into a basketball venue, who weren't on the edge of their seats or standing for the final 10 minutes.

Louisville hurt itself by missing four straight free throws in a 2-minute span until Chane Behanan made the second of two with a minute left to bring the Cardinals within 70-67.

"We had a very good opportunity but we missed our free throws and they made their free throws," Pitino said. "But our effort was extraordinary and I'm proud of them. They're a top-10 team."

The win was the 23rd straight in a regular-season tournament for the Blue Devils, a streak that dates to the championship of the 2006 CBE Classic.

Louisville had won the last four regular-season tournaments it was in.

Study reveals the proteins expressed by human cytomegalovirus

Friday, November 23, 2012

New findings reveal the surprisingly complex protein-coding capacity of the human cytomegalovirus, or HCMV, and provide the first steps toward understanding how the virus manipulates human cells during infection. The genome of the HCMV was first sequenced over 20 years ago, but researchers have now investigated the proteome?the complete set of expressed proteins?of this common pathogen as well.

HCMV is an incredibly successful virus, and it infects most humans on the planet. Birth defects and disease, however, are only known to occur in newborn infants and adults with compromised immune systems, respectively. But, the pathogen also has one of the largest viral genomes on record, with a massive 240,000 base pairs of DNA. (For comparison, the genome of the poliovirus only contains about 7,500 base pairs.)

Noam Stern-Ginossar from the University of California in San Francisco, along with colleagues from the United States and Germany, used a combination of techniques, including ribosome profiling and mass spectrometry, to study HCMV's proteome. The method could be used to investigate proteins produced by other viruses as well, they say.

The researchers' findings appear in the 23 November issue of the journal Science, which is published by AAAS, the nonprofit science society.

"The genome of a virus is just a starting point," explained Jonathan Weissman from the University of California, a co-author of the Science report. "Understanding what proteins are encoded by that genome allows us to start thinking about what the virus does and how we can interfere with it? Each of the proteins we've identified has the potential to tell us how this virus is manipulating its host cell."

Stern-Ginossar and the other researchers suspected that existing maps of HCMV's protein-coding potential, based largely on computational methods, were far from complete. So, they began mapping the positions of ribosomes?the cellular organelles in which proteins are synthesized?during an HCMV infection of human fibroblast cells. With the resulting map, Stern-Ginossar and her colleagues discovered templates for hundreds of previously unidentified proteins that were encoded in corresponding DNA segments of the viral genome, known as open reading frames.

Surprisingly, the researchers found that many of these open reading frames encode for exceptionally short protein sequences (fewer than 100 amino acids). And some of the newly identified open reading frames were even hiding inside other open reading frames, they say.

"A key finding of our work is that each of these templates can encode more than one protein," said Annette Michalski from the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany, another co-author of the Science report. "And these extremely short proteins might be more common than we expect."

The researchers applied mass spectrometry to confirm the presence of many unknown viral proteins that had been predicted by mapping the ribosome positions.

In the future, this coupling of ribosome profiling with mass spectrometry might be used to investigate the proteomes of other complex viruses. Eventually, such information could be used to understand how different viruses hijack their hosts' cells for their own purposes.
