Dressing James Bond ? Zoomer Magazine | Canada's Boomer ...

When it comes to styling the world?s most fashionable film hero ? and the cast of friends, villains, and lovers that accompany him ? Lindy Hemming and Bronwyn Cosgrave are just the ladies to talk to. Co-curators of the Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style exhibit at Toronto?s TIFF Bell Lightbox, Hemming and Cosgrave possess an intimate knowledge of the famed spy: Hemming served as costume designer for five Bond films from 1995 to 2006, while Cosgrave is a noted fashion-design writer and broadcaster. They recently sat down with Zoomer?s Mike Crisolago to discuss the job of designing 007.

MIKE CRISOLAGO: When you think about James Bond?s style the first word that comes to my mind is ?iconic.?

LINDY HEMMING: Isn?t it the actor inside the clothes that makes that happen? I think the thing is it?s that chemistry. This is what costume design is really. It?s finding the chemistry, finding the way of bringing out the actor?s own charm, sexuality, physicality and acting ? character ? and using clothes to help them explore that and to help the audience who?s looking at the actor as the character to understand more about who he is. In the case of Bond ? your job is to keep him sophisticated, elegant, not fashionably over the top, because then he wouldn?t be able to be a spy. And also, I think you have to make him look like the clothes he?s wearing are his clothes. He has to fit in them and he has to feel comfortable in them and move physically and beautifully in them.

BRONWYN COSGRAVE: The interesting thing about Bond?s style is that it has remained consistent. I mean, the original conduit-cut suit by Anthony Sinclair that Sean Connery wore in Dr. No really was the benchmark. Every tailor that dressed a Bond looked at those suits ? at the tuxedo and his suit ? as a sartorial reference point ? I really do think he has maintained this classic air of masculinity and also been a fashion figure who hasn?t been afraid to take risks with his styles ? say, wear a pink tie in Diamonds Are Forever (with) a cream-coloured suit ? The costume designers that I?ve interviewed, and with Lindy, they would always get the look books of designers for the season ahead and look and say, ?Okay, what can he or she wear that?s going to push it forward?? Because films come out two years after they?re made, you?re always looking to the future.

MC: You must have felt quite a bit of pressure, Lindy, when you took on the role of Bond?s costume designer.

LH: Whenever you do a franchise or whenever you do an iconic person, there?s a huge pressure to the fans. You know, I was doing the last three Batman [films] and the pressure to get that right is the same as the pressure to get Bond right. It?s huge.

MC: You?ve mentioned before that it?s not just Bond?s style you?re designing but also the Bond villains and Bond girls as well.

LH: The great fun in Bond is to do the villainous ladies, obviously, and the villainous men. But especially the ladies, because usually these days they?ve written in the script a lovely character development so that you don?t know who they are at the beginning and they become bad or vice versa. So making them a wardrobe of clothes and designing them with the actor and the director is one of the joys of doing Bond.

BC: The Dr. No jacket ? we recreated that jacket [for the exhibit] because, actually, it is like the Anthony Sinclair suit ? that jacket has served as a reference point for all the Bond villains. Bond villains are never wearing a suit and tie ? There?s always this reference point, but then it continues on and is tweaked to be contemporary.

MC: And the fashions don?t just look good ? they?re functional.

BC: The thing is [the films] are action adventures so the clothes had to be clothes that could move. Feminists have always lamented that women in Bond films, their skirts are slit to the thigh. Well, that?s so they could run faster at a moment?s notice. Or the wonderful dress we have ? the Carey Lowell rip-away hem dress ? which is in the casino from License to Kill. She whipped off the bottom of her skirt because she was concealing a gun underneath it. And it became like a knee-length dress, and she could run. So yeah, definitely they?re functional

MC: As a curator, what do you hope people discover about Bond or what it takes to design and style Bond from this exhibit?

LH: My passion is for people to understand a little bit more about the design in movies. And by using the vehicle of the Bond films, because we have the archive, I want people to look at the design of props, the design of sets, the design of the gadgets, at the design of an umbrella that turns into something else, all these things. And, of course, costumes. But the product design nature of what goes on and the set design or architecture nature of what has gone on in these films is phenomenal, and I hope people come and are able to get into a bit of that.

BC: We were tasked with creating a retrospective, but we didn?t want it to be nostalgic. We wanted it to be modern ? These pieces are displayed as artifacts, which is rare because production design drawings aren?t necessarily that. But then when you look at the talent behind these films, they really did attain a cultural relevance ? The great thing for film buffs is the storyboards? It really will convey how a film is made. Hopefully, the cumulative experience is that people will walk away understanding the complexity of production design.

Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style runs at the TIFF Bell Lightbox from Oct. 27, 2012 to Jan. 20, 2013. Click here for more information.

Gardner Denver confirms exploring potential sale

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Industrial machinery maker Gardner Denver Inc said it is exploring strategic alternatives including a potential sale or merger of the company, confirming a Reuters report earlier on Thursday.

Gardner Denver said in a statement that its board of directors is working with its management team and financial adviser Goldman Sachs Group Inc to evaluate options to enhance shareholder value.

No decision has been made and there is no guarantee the review will result in a transaction, Gardner Denver said. Reuters reported earlier in the day that the company's bankers have reached out to potential buyers in recent weeks, citing people familiar with the matter.

Shares of Gardner Denver surged to a six-month high on Thursday and closed up 20.5 percent at $66, representing a market value of about $3.2 billion. The company had long-term debt of some $400 million as of the end of June.

Several major private equity firms are considering initial offers for the company, which are due on November 5, the people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

TPG Capital LP, Onex Corp , KKR & Co LP , Blackstone Group LP and Bain Capital LLC are among the buyout firms interested in a potential buyout, the people said. TPG and Onex are expected to bid jointly, two of the people added.

Goldman Sachs and Blackstone declined to comment. Bain, TPG, Onex and KKR did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The move to solicit offers follows months of pressure from activist investor ValueAct Capital LLC, which has been calling for a sale of the company after acquiring a roughly 5 percent stake. ValueAct did not respond to a request for comment.

Gardner Denver, which makes compressors, pumps and vacuum products for industrial uses, hired Goldman Sachs initially as a defense adviser after ValueAct in July urged the company's board to pursue a sale.

The move followed the sudden resignation of Chief Executive Barry Pennypacker earlier that month and his interim replacement by Chief Financial Officer Michael Larsen.

Credit Suisse analyst Julian Mitchell said in a research report on Thursday that a take-out of the company could occur in the $70s per share, and said the stock is inexpensive at current levels even if a sale does not occur.

"We think there should be interest in GDI from both strategic and financial buyers," Mitchell said, adding that a private equity buyer is more likely given extensive cost-cutting planned in Europe and solid cash flow generation.

Mitchell said recent multiples in deals of similar companies imply a take-out price of $73-$82 per share for Gardner Denver.

The company has suffered as a result of its exposure, through its pumps business, to oil and gas prices.

Lower demand for petroleum and industrial pumps pressured the company's engineered products division, which reported a 36 percent drop in orders in the second quarter. The division accounts for 54 percent of Gardner Denver's total revenue.

In August it said it would shut some of its European manufacturing facilities and cut jobs as part of a restructuring plan aimed at cutting costs and expanding margins.

Apple unwraps mini-iPad

iPad mini

Report an error

SAN JOSE - Apple Inc took the wraps off an 8-inch tablet on Tuesday in its biggest product move since the debut of the iPad two years ago, launching a smaller version of the gadget into a market staked out by Amazon.com Inc and Google Inc.

The 7.9 inch ?iPad mini? marks Apple?s first foray into the smaller-tablet segment. Apple also announced a fourth-generation full-sized iPad with improvements in graphics and processing speeds, just two days before Microsoft <MS FT.O> is due to show off its own ?Surface? tablet.

Apple hopes to beat back their charge onto its home turf of consumer electronics hardware, while safeguarding its lead in the larger 10-inch tablet space that even deep-pocketed rivals like Samsung Electronics have found tough to penetrate.

Chief Executive Tim Cook kicked off Tuesday?s event, held at the opulent California Theater in San Jose, by touting the just-launched iPhone 5 as the fastest-selling smartphone in history. He added that there are now 200 million devices running iOS6, the fastest upgrade rate he has seen since the mobile software was launched about a month ago.

Amazon?s Kindle and Google?s Nexus 7 have grabbed a chunk of the lower end of the tablet market and proved demand for a pocket-sized slate exists. That has forced Apple into a space it has avoided and at times derided, analysts say.

A smaller tablet would mark the first device to be added to Apple?s compact portfolio under Cook, who took over from co-founder Steve Jobs just before his death.

?Apple sensed early that they had a real winner with the iPad and that has proven to be correct,? said Lars Albright, co-founder of mobile advertising startup SessionM and a former Apple ad executive. ?They have a large market share, and to protect that market share they have got to be innovative.?

In a rarity for a company that tightly controls events, Apple live-streamed its invitation-only presentation - where it is expected to unveil the mini tablet - to Apple devices such as the iPad and Macintosh computers.

Wall Street analysts have said for months that Apple was planning a less expensive version of the iPad to take on cheaper competing devices, a move they say might hurt its margins but prevent its rivals from dominating an increasingly important segment.

Will you be getting a mini-iPad?

The Most Detailed Images of Uranus' Atmosphere Ever

New submitter monkeyhybrid writes "The Planetary Society's Emily Lakdawalla reports on the most detailed images of Uranus ever taken. The infrared sensitivity of the ground based Keck II telescope's NIRC2 instrument enabled astronomers to see below the high level methane based atmosphere that has hampered previous observations, and with unprecedented clarity. If you ever thought Uranus was a dull blue looking sphere then look again; you could easily mistake these images for being of Jupiter!"

AMD Never Settle bundle gives Radeon HD 7000 buyers free games they'd actually care to play

Just about anyone who has bought more than one aftermarket graphics card knows that bundled games rarely matter. They're usually year-old titles or neutered editions built only to showcase the GPU's performance for a few hours. AMD thinks its Never Settle bundle might finally get us to notice. Buy any modern Radeon HD video card from the 7770 GHz Edition on up and you'll get a download code for at least one new game you'd genuinely want to try, ranging from Far Cry 3 on basic cards to a full three-game deal that supplies Far Cry 3, Hitman: Absolution and Sleeping Dogs to high rollers buying the 7900 series. There's likewise a discount for Medal of Honor: Warfighter and promises of bundles in 2013 for Bioshock Infinite and the reimagined Tomb Raider. As long as you're not dead set on springing for a GeForce board in the next few months, one of the qualifying cards might be worth a look to jumpstart your game collection.

Jordan foils Qaeda plot, arrests 11 militants: state TV

AMMAN (Reuters) - Jordan has foiled a plot by an al Qaeda-linked cell to bomb its shopping centres and assassinate Western diplomats, state television said on Sunday, thwarting an attempt to destabilize the key U.S. ally.

Security forces had detained 11 suspects, all Jordanians, in connection with the plot, which envisaged carrying out attacks in the capital Amman using smuggled weapons and explosives from Syria, according to security officials cited by television.

The plot had been active since June.

Minister of Information Samih al Maaytah said the arrests underscored the serious threat posed by radical "terror groups" seeking to undermine the kingdom's long tradition of stability.

A key U.S. ally in the Middle East and Israel's peace partner, Jordan enjoys close ties with Western intelligence agencies and has often been targeted by al-Qaeda and other Islamist militants.

The cell had targeted two major shopping malls in the capital and was planning a bombing campaign in the capital's affluent Abdoun neighborhood, where many foreign embassies are located.

A security source said the suspects had manufactured explosives "aimed at inflicting the heaviest losses possible".

"The group was able to devise new types of explosives to be used for the first time and planned to add TNT to increase their destructive impact," said the source.

The same security source said there was a crucial link with Syria where President Bashar al-Assad is battling to put down an uprising against his family's rule.

"Their plans included getting explosives and mortars from Syria," the security source told Reuters, saying the militants had sought to strike at a time of regional upheaval when the country's security establishment is over stretched.

"EXPLOSIVE BELTS"

The authorities said they had seized large quantities of ammunition, machine guns and other items such as computers. The militants were training to use "suicide bombers using explosive belts and booby-trapped cars", said another security source.

Maaytah told reporters that members of the militant group had spent some time in Syria, without saying when they had returned to Jordan.

"This group arrived from Syria. They have been going in and out," said Maaytah, explaining that the case had been transferred to the state security prosecutor.

Another security source said the cell had been fighting for "some period" alongside Islamist rebel groups in Syria.

Jordan has in recent months arrested scores of hardline Islamist fundamentalists along its northern border with Syria as they were about to cross into the country to join jihadist groups fighting to overthrow Assad.

If Jordan allows Assad's opponents to aid the armed uprising, Amman's security forces fear the Syrian government could retaliate by sending agents to carry out bomb attacks inside the country.

Intercepted electronic mail showed that the cell had received advice from Iraqi Qaeda explosives experts.

Jordan regularly arrests Islamist suspects and puts them on trial in military courts that human rights groups say are illegal and lack proper legal safeguards. Many civic groups also say many of the Islamist cases are politically motivated.

In 2005, al Qaeda claimed responsibility for three suicide bombings that ripped through luxury hotels in Jordan's capital killing dozens of people.

Boy in U.S. experiencing early onset of puberty

ScienceDaily (Oct. 20, 2012) ? A study conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has documented that boys in the U.S. are experiencing the onset of puberty six months to two years earlier than reported in previous research.

The study, "Secondary Sexual Characteristics in Boys: Data from the Pediatric Research in Office Settings Network," will be published in the November 2012 Pediatrics and published online Oct. 20 to coincide with the AAP National Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans. The trend toward earlier onset of puberty in girls is now generally accepted and supported by extensive research. Until now, little research was available on the age of onset of puberty in boys in contemporary times.

The study was designed and conducted through the AAP Pediatric Research in Office Settings (PROS) practice-based research network, a system of hundreds of pediatricians nationwide who contribute data to AAP-led scientific studies on children's health. A 1997 PROS study was the first large study to document earlier pubertal onset in US girls. For the study of pubertal characteristics in boys, 212 practitioners in 144 pediatric offices in 41 states recorded information on more than 4,100 boys.

This new research found that the observed mean ages of stage 2 genital and pubic hair growth, and early testicular enlargement -- standard indications of pubertal onset -- were six months to two years earlier than documented by data several decades earlier. Pediatricians recorded the earliest stage of puberty as occurring in non-Hispanic white boys at age 10.14 years; in non-Hispanic African-American boy at age 9.14 years, and in Hispanic boys at age 10.4.

Overall, African-American boys were more likely to start puberty earlier than white or Hispanic boys. Study authors say the causes and public health implications of an apparent shift toward a lower age of puberty onset for boys is unclear and warrants further research.

"Contemporary data on the ages of pubertal characteristics in U.S. boys from onset to maturity, lacking until now, are needed by pediatricians, public health scientists, and parents," said study author Marcia E. Herman-Giddens, DrPH. "Following changes in growth and development is an important part of assessing the health of the nation's children. I am grateful to the pediatricians and the boys who participated in this exciting study."

"All parents need to know whether their sons are maturing within the contemporary age range, but, until now, this has not been known for U.S. boys," said PROS Director Richard C. Wasserman, MD, MPH, FAAP. "The PROS study provides 21st century standards."

"The landmark PROS study of the 1990s provided contemporary data for girls' puberty," Dr. Wasserman said. "A study on boys puberty was a logical follow-up. Our pediatric endocrinologist colleagues now use the PROS puberty assessment training materials in their own studies and fellowship training."

(AP) ? Lebanon's prime minister linked the massive car bomb that tore through Beirut to the civil war in neighboring Syria on Saturday, the latest signal that the crisis is enflaming an already tense region.

The blast Friday in the heart of Beirut's Christian area killed eight people, including the country's intelligence chief, Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan.

The government declared a national day of mourning for the victims on Saturday, but protesters took to the streets, burning tires and setting up roadblocks around the country in a sign of the boiling anger over the bomb.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said Saturday the explosion is linked to al-Hassan's recent investigation, in which he exposed an alleged plot by Syria to unleash a campaign of bombings and assassinations to sow chaos in Lebanon.

"I don't want to prejudge the investigation, but in fact we cannot separate yesterday's crime from the revelation of the explosions that could have happened," Mikati said at a news conference following an emergency Cabinet meeting.

Lebanon's fractious politics are closely entwined with Syria's. The countries share a web of political and sectarian ties and rivalries, and Lebanon has been caught up in the fallout of from the civil war pitting Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces against rebels seeking to overthrow the regime.

The countries share a web of political and sectarian ties and rivalries, often causing events on one side of the border to echo on the other. Lebanon's opposition is an anti-Syrian bloc, while the prime minister and much of the government are seen as pro-Syrian.

Al-Hassan's probe over the summer led to the arrest of former Information Minister Michel Samaha, one of Assad's most loyal allies in Lebanon.

Samaha, who is in custody, is accused of plotting a wave of attacks to spread sectarian violence in Lebanon at Syria's behest. Also indicted in in the August sweep was Syrian Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, one of Assad's highest aides. He was charged in absentia.

Mikati also said he had offered to resign after Friday's car bomb, but the president asked him not to plunge the country into more uncertainty. Mikati said he suggested a national unity government but President Michel Suleiman asked him for some time to hold discussions with political leaders.

Mikati is facing deep political pressure from his opponents over the attack.

Friday's violence and subsequent protests threatened to plunge Lebanon back into a dark cycle of bombings and reprisal that made the country notorious during the 1975-90 civil war.

In the eastern town of Marj angry protesters tried to storm an office of the pro-Syrian Itihad group, but Lebanese soldiers pushed them away wounding five protesters, security officials said. They added that dozens of people who marched in protest in the border town of Moqueibleh came under fire from the Syrian side of the border forcing them to disperse without any injury.

The highway linking central Beirut with the city's international airport was closed, as well as the highway that links the capital with Syria, the officials said on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly.

The bombing also raised fears that the crisis could lay bare Lebanon's sectarian tensions.

Many of Lebanon's Sunni Muslims have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Shiite Muslims have tended to back Assad. Al-Hassan was a Sunni whose stances were widely seen to oppose Syria and Shiite Hezbollah, the country's most powerful ally in Lebanon.

Al-Hassan also played a role in the investigation of the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, a powerful Sunni figure.

A U.N.-backed tribunal has indicted four members of militant group Hezbollah, which along with its allies now holds a majority in Lebanon's Cabinet. Hezbollah denies involvement in Hariri's killing and has refused to extradite the suspects.

Al-Hassan's department also had a role in breaking up several Israeli spy rings inside Lebanon over the past few years, Lebanese officials said.

Member of former Prime Minister Saad Hariri's parliamentary bloc Nuhad Mashnouk said al-Hassan's funeral will be held in Beirut Sunday afternoon and the late general will be buried next to Hariri's tomb.

Lebanon's top Sunni cleric, Grand Mufti Mohammed Rashid Kabbani, condemned al-Hassan's assassination, calling it a "criminal explosion that targets Lebanon and its people." He called for self-restraint, saying "the criminal will get his punishment sooner or later."

Police and army troops sealed off the site of Friday's blast as military intelligence agents investigated what was the deadliest bombing in Beirut in four years.

Rafik Khoury, editor of the independent Al-Anwar daily, said the assassination was an attempt to draw Lebanon into the conflict in Syria, which has been the most serious threat to the Assad family's 40-year dynasty.

"The side that carried the assassination knows the reactions and dangerous repercussions and is betting that it will happen. Strife is wanted in Lebanon," Khoury wrote.

Sharbal Abdo, a Beirut resident who lives down the block from where the car bomb detonated, on Saturday brought his six-year-old son Chris and 12-year-old daughter Jane to see what happened the day before. They were both at school when the blast ripped through the area.

"They were very afraid yesterday, and cried a lot late into the night," Abdo said. "Today I decided to bring them here and show what happened. They need to face this situation. It may be their future."

Court: Judge erred in tossing Smith case verdicts

(AP) ? An appellate court said a trial judge erred in dismissing conspiracy convictions against Anna Nicole Smith's psychiatrist and manager, a ruling that defense attorneys said could send the case in different directions.

The ruling came after Superior Court Judge Robert Perry chose to throw out the 2010 jury verdict that Smith manager Howard K. Stern and psychiatrist Khristine Eroshevich conspired to obtain prescription drugs for the troubled model by using false names.

The judge found it was not unusual in the celebrity world Smith inhabited for fake names to be used to protect privacy.

The Second District Court of Appeals reversed those findings, saying there was enough evidence to support the conspiracy convictions. It said Stern cannot be tried, but Eroshevich might get another trial. However, the judge also could take different actions because the appellate court returned the case to him with no instructions.

"We express no opinion on how the trial court should exercise its discretion," the ruling said.

Lawyers called the decision confusing.

"I'm not sure I fully understand it," said attorney Bradley Brunon, who represents Eroshevich. "What they said is that what the judge did in dismissing for insufficient evidence is wrong. But he could get to the same place by reviewing the case as what we call a 13th juror."

Brunon said he would have to do additional research to understand the potential implications.

Attorney Steve Sadow, who represents Stern said it was clear from the decision that Stern cannot be tried again without double jeopardy violations. But he said Perry could again review Stern's motion for a new trial.

"If he granted the motion, Howard still could not be tried again," Sadow said.

Sadow said the appeals court obviously had been wrestling with the issue of double jeopardy and had the parties brief it several times.

The convictions of Stern and Eroshevich were minor in the overall scope of the case. Most of the 11 counts resulted in acqutttals.

The prosecutors who brought the appeal said they had not yet read the decision and had no comment. Sadow said prosecutors could appeal to the California Supreme Court.

Stern and Eroshevich were convicted Oct. 28, 2010, in the case of the reality TV star and former Playboy model.

In September of last year, prosecutors filed an unusual appeal saying Judge Perry was biased and had created a celebrity exception to the law. The appellate court did not address these points.

A case involved prescriptions given to Smith in the months before she died in Florida on Feb. 8, 2007, of an accidental drug overdose. The defendants were not charged with causing her death.

The two guilty verdicts against Eroshevich and Stern on conspiracy counts involved the use of false names to obtain prescription pain medications for Smith. Eroshevich also was convicted of one count of obtaining Vicodin under a false name.

Perry dismissed the conspiracy counts and reduced the one conviction against Eroshevich to a misdemeanor with a sentence of one year of probation and a $100 fine. Her lawyer said she has fulfilled those terms.

At trial, Perry suggested authorities had chosen the wrong case to prove their point and indicated they did not understand the legislative intent of the law involving prescription drugs.

"There is no doubt that there are doctors who are nothing more than pill pushers and should be prosecuted and imprisoned.," he said in his ruling. "This case did not involve such doctors."

A co-defendant, Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, who was Smith's physician, was acquitted of all charges.

The defendants' nine-week trial was the final act of the long-running drama centering on the blonde beauty's troubled life, which was documented on reality TV, in tabloids and in trial testimony.

HBT:Overaggressive Cards come up empty in Game 5

In getting shut out by the Giants on Friday, the Cardinals never worked a walk against Barry Zito and company. Their one free pass was intentional, as Pete Kozma was walked ahead of the pitcher to set up an inning-ending double play in the second inning.

In all, the Cardinals have drawn a total of eight unintentional walks in five games against the Giants. That?s a remarkably low total from an offense that finished fourth in the NL with 533 walks. And it?s not like the Giants have been throwing Cliff Lee over and over again. They were seventh in the NL in walks allowed by their pitchers, at 489.

Matt Holliday and Jon Jay have been the most aggressive of the Cardinals hitters so far, and it seems to be taking a toll. Holliday went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts tonight and is 4-for-21 with no extra-base hits in the series. He hasn?t homered since the wild card game against the Braves two weeks ago. Jay, the Cardinals? leadoff man, is 5-for-21 with no walks. He?s also been awful in road games all year long, so there?s a case for sitting him with the series returning to St. Louis on Sunday. However, the Cardinals value his defense so highly that it?s unlikely they?d go that route.

At the very least, hitting coach Mark McGwire should have talks with both. For Holliday, this is shaping up as his sixth lousy postseason series in seven total series with the Cardinals. He hit .289 with five homers and 10 RBI during the Rockies? World Series run in 2007, but since arriving in St. Louis in 2009, he?s come in at .250 with three homers and 13 RBI in 108 at-bats. Much of that production came in last year?s NLCS against the Brewers. He went 3-for-19 with no RBI in the World Series last year, and he?s hitting .222 with seven RBI in 45 at-bats so far this month.

Breakthrough offers new route to large-scale quantum computing

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? In a key step toward creating a working quantum computer, Princeton researchers have developed a method that may allow the quick and reliable transfer of quantum information throughout a computing device

The finding, by a team led by Princeton physicist Jason Petta, could eventually allow engineers to build quantum computers consisting of millions of quantum bits, or qubits. So far, quantum researchers have only been able to manipulate small numbers of qubits, not enough for a practical machine.

"The whole game at this point in quantum computing is trying to build a larger system," said Andrew Houck, an assistant professor of electrical engineering who is part of the research team.

To make the transfer, Petta's team used a stream of microwave photons to analyze a pair of electrons trapped in a tiny cage called a quantum dot. The "spin state" of the electrons -- information about how they are spinning -- serves as the qubit, a basic unit of information. The microwave stream allows the scientists to read that information.

"We create a cavity with mirrors on both ends -- but they don't reflect visible light, they reflect microwave radiation," Petta said. "Then we send microwaves in one end, and we look at the microwaves as they come out the other end. The microwaves are affected by the spin states of the electrons in the cavity, and we can read that change."

In an ordinary sense, the distances involved are very small; the entire apparatus operates over a little more than a centimeter. But on the subatomic scale, they are vast. It is like coordinating the motion of a top spinning on the moon with another on the surface of Earth.

"It's the most amazing thing," said Jake Taylor, a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Joint Quantum Institute at the University of Maryland, who worked on the project with the Princeton team. "You have a single electron almost completely changing the properties of an inch-long electrical system."

For years, teams of scientists have pursued the idea of using quantum mechanics to build a new machine that would revolutionize computing. The goal is not build a faster or more powerful computer, but to build one that approaches problems in a completely different fashion.

Standard computers store information as classical "bits," which can take on a value of either 0 or 1. These bits allow programmers to create the complex instructions that are the basis for modern computing power. Since Alan Turing took the first steps toward creating a computer at Princeton in 1936, engineers have created vastly more powerful and complex machines, but this basic binary system has remained unchanged.

The power of a quantum computer comes from the strange rules of quantum mechanics, which describe the universe of subatomic particles. Quantum mechanics says that an electron can spin in one direction, representing a 1, or in another direction, a 0. But it can also be in something called "superposition" representing all states between 1 and 0. If scientists and engineers can build a working machine that takes advantage of this, they would open up entirely new fields of computing.

"The point of a quantum computer is not that they can do what a normal computer can do but faster; that's not what they are," said Houck. "The quantum computer would allow us to approach problems differently. It would allow us to solve problems that cannot be solved with a normal computer."

Mathematicians are still working on possible uses for a quantum system, but the machines could allow them to accomplish tasks such as factoring currently unfactorable numbers, breaking codes or predicting the behavior of molecules.

One challenge facing scientists is that the spins of electrons, or any other quantum particles, are incredibly delicate. Any outside influences, whether a wisp of magnetism or glimpse of light, destabilizes the electrons' spins and introduces errors.

Over the years, scientists have developed techniques to observe spin states without disturbing them. (This year's Nobel Prize in physics honored two scientists who first demonstrated the direct observation of quantum particles.) But analyzing small numbers of spins is not enough; millions will be required to make a real quantum processor.

To approach the problem, Petta's team combined techniques from two branches of science: from materials science, they used a structure called a quantum dot to hold and analyze electrons' spins; and from optics, they adopted a microwave channel to transfer the spin information from the dot.

To make the quantum dots, the team isolated a pair of electrons on a small section of material called a "semiconductor nanowire." Basically, that means a wire that is so thin that it can hold electrons like soda bubbles in a straw. They then created small "cages" along the wire. The cages are set up so that electrons will settle into a particular cage depending on their energy level.

This is how the team reads the spin state: electrons of similar spin will repel, while those of different spins will attract. So the team manipulates the electrons to a certain energy level and then reads their position. If they are in the same cage, they are spinning differently; if they are in different cages, the spins are the same.

The second step is to place this quantum dot inside the microwave channel. This allows the team to transfer the information about the pair's spin state -- the qubit.

Petta said the next step is to increase the reliability of the setup for a single electron pair. After that, the team plans to add more quantum dots to create more qubits. Team members are cautiously optimistic. There appear to be no insurmountable problems at this point but, as with any system, increasing complexity could lead to unforeseen difficulties.

"The methods we are using here are scalable, and we would like to use them in a larger system," Petta said. "But to make use of the scaling, it needs to work a little better. The first step is to make better mirrors for the microwave cavity."

Obese teen boys have up to 50 percent less testosterone than lean boys

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

A study by the University at Buffalo shows for the first time that obese males ages 14 to 20 have up to 50 percent less total testosterone than do normal males of the same age, significantly increasing their potential to be impotent and infertile as adults.

The paper was published online as an accepted article in Clinical Endocrinology.

The authors are the same researchers in the University at Buffalo's School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences who first reported in 2004 the presence of low testosterone levels, known as hypogonadism, in obese, type 2 diabetic adult males and confirmed it in 2010 in more than 2,000 obese men, both diabetic and nondiabetic.

"We were surprised to observe a 50 percent reduction in testosterone in this pediatric study because these obese males were young and were not diabetic," says Paresh Dandona, MD, PhD, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Medicine, chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism in the UB medical school and first author on the study. "The implications of our findings are, frankly, horrendous because these boys are potentially impotent and infertile," says Dandona. "The message is a grim one with massive epidemiological implications."

The small study included 25 obese and 25 lean males and was controlled for age and level of sexual maturity. Concentrations of total and free testosterone and estradiol, an estrogen hormone, were measured in morning fasting blood samples. The results need to be confirmed with a larger number of subjects, Dandona says.

"These findings demonstrate that the effect of obesity is powerful, even in the young, and that lifestyle and nutritional intake starting in childhood have major repercussions throughout all stages of life," he says.

In addition to the reproductive consequences, the absence or low levels of testosterone that were found also will increase the tendency toward abdominal fat and reduced muscle, Dandona says, leading to insulin resistance, which contributes to diabetes.

"The good news is that we know that testosterone levels do return to normal in obese adult males who undergo gastric bypass surgery," says Dandona. "It's possible that levels also will return to normal through weight loss as a result of lifestyle change, although this needs to be confirmed by larger studies."

The UB researchers now intend to study whether or not weight loss accomplished either through lifestyle changes or through pharmacological intervention will restore testosterone levels in obese teen males.
