A lot of people are afraid to get into marketing on the web because of the failure factor. Knowing that you may not succeed is a huge deterrent for many people. Just know that the success stories out there are anything but rare, and if you follow wise advice like the tips provided in this article, you can become one of those happy endings.
When someone purchases from you, go the extra mile and offer some additional benefits. For example, include a coupon for future business, or a copy of an e-book. These are just some ways to reward a customer for purchasing from you. A customer that feels appreciated is a customer that tells their friends and comes back to order more.
If you?re a restaurant making yourself a website, the best thing you can do is to have a copy of your menu available on your website. This is going to be one of the most common reasons people will visit your site. You should also mention any specials or deals that you may have.
Keep your marketing messaging consistent through all of your online properties. If there is a disconnect, your brand will look disorganized and consumers will question your legitimacy. For example, if you create a post on Twitter that says consumers should join an ?open forum? on your brand?s website, don?t rephrase this to be a ?community discussion? when posting on your Facebook page.
Get rid of what you do not need on your website. When you get a template for a website or a blog, you usually get widgets along with it, do you really need those? You should focus your efforts on getting your visitors? attention and getting them to click on a few links.
Buy a link on a highly ranked site. Some websites allow other webmasters to purchase a link on their site, and buying one holds the promise of more hits on your website and more customers as well. Just be careful to investigate the other site first to make sure it is compatible with yours.
When you have everything up and running, and ready to go, on your new marketing website, it will be time to include advertising on your site. Do your research to find the best paying ads and the optimal placement locations. This can get confusing fast. You may want to seek expert advice in this area.
Be as detailed as possible when marketing a product. Studies show that large percentages of the population need profuse explanations about the benefits of the products they are thinking of buying in order to be persuaded. If customers genuinely believe the marketing, they will be much more willing to buy the product. Researchers have found that many people will trust a website with several paragraphs of information about a product over a website that is very succinct.
Isn?t creating your own personal internet marketing plan useful? As you have seen in this article, there are a lot of ways this can be done and no two techniques or tools will yield the same results. There are also lots of customizable options that can work with your business and budget.

A while ago, Nerada Tea asked me to write a recipe using their fabulous products. When I agreed, they sent me a carton of more than ten different herbal and black tea blends and I?ve pondered and taste tested and developed recipes for a sponsored post ever since. Then, just as I had finished the first recipe, Barmbrack, something happened in my ordinary day that demanded a well-earned and restorative cup of tea. And it got me thinking, not just about the many ways cups of tea have provided focal points in our lives, but how often it soothes us without us knowing or realising it?s happening. Tea is like that.
Coffee, not so.
Nerada Tea is the largest grower and manufacturer of tea in Australia with over 1,000 acres of planted tea on the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland and produces over 1.5 million kilos of black tea a year ? that?s about 750 million cups of tea.
But in the end, I wasn?t thinking about the vast scale of operations Nerada have ? I was left pondering the stories we all have, over a solitary cuppa. Our stories are so often hidden in the background, they are the sort we might only share with a trusted friend over a cup of tea. Or at a bus stop, as happened to me earlier this week.
*? *? *? *? *? *? *? *? *? *? *? *? *
This is how it happened: I was standing at a bus stop when a car skittled an elderly woman as she crossed the road. Right in front of me.
The background noise of traffic at the nearby intersection was on mute while I was listening to the contents of my head, so I didn?t notice the car slow down in front of me on the approach to the red traffic lights. I didn?t see the old woman as she crossed diagonally across the road, hands laden with shopping bags, as she tried to avoid the pedestrian crossing a further 20 metres away.
There was just a short screech of tyres on tarmac, a dull thud as the front side of the car connected with the hip of the old woman and then I watched, fully focused now, as she fell in slow motion, onto her side as the contents of her grocery bags went everywhere.
I was the first one to her.
?No, stay there. Don?t try to get up. Lie down. Tell, me, where does it hurt? Elbow? Hip? What?s your name? Irene? Hi, I?m Sandra. Please stay there, we?ll help you.?
I turned and looked behind me. There was a young man, earphones on, bright shiny suit. A business type. ?Could you call an ambulance please?? He nodded, reaching for his phone.
?No, no ambulance. I must get home. My husband. He has dementia, I can?t leave him.? The old woman, whose name was Irene, was by now attempting to get up, but was clearly in pain. She didn?t make it too far before laying back down, me with my hand under her head to cradle it off the road. Cars went round us as the lights turned green.
Around us, two more women materialised. One held her hand, the other talked to Mr Shiny Suit, then introduced herself. She seemed very composed, unflappable, explaining she was a nurse. Quickly assessing the situation, she nodded in agreement when told an ambulance had been called.
A second man, who I vaguely recall waiting with me at the bus stop, stepped further into the road. He directed the cars around us all, waving grocery bags of his own in his hands as he did so. In between breaks in the traffic, he picked up the scattered groceries,? then put them on the pavement in a neat pile.
Irene wanted to sit up, so we helped her, gently, steadily. She made it as far as a sitting position but couldn?t go further. The other woman who crouched next to her supported her back but seemed very teary. It was only then I realised she was the driver of the car. She was in shock.
?It?s okay,? I kept repeating. I wanted to add, ?You?ve done nothing wrong?, but checked myself. Instead she said, ?I was on my way to the cemetery?.
Oh, Christ. I looked at her immaculate car. The back seat was filled with flowers. When I looked back at her, to see her crying, silently, her shaky hands still placed around Irene?s shoulders.
It?s okay, I say. I kept repeating it, over again, like a mantra. It?s okay. The ambulance is coming, but Irene couldn?t wait any longer;? she needed to lie back down. I took off my thick coat, huddled down next to her, placed it under her head. It was blowing a gale and I silently cursed myself for minding that she had my coat. I was tempted to use her as a wind break. It?s okay, the ambulance is coming.
Irene wanted to go home. My Husband, she said. I must get back to him. The nurse starts taking down names and phone numbers. Do you have anyone who can stay with him while you go to hospital? A daughter? A son?
As the sirens in the distance get louder, the nurse called Irene?s daughter in law. I heard her say, ?it?s okay, she?s conscious, lucid ??.
The driver was still weeping quietly. As I put my hand on her back, she says ?I was visiting my dad and brother at the cemetery. I never usually come down this street, never??
When the ambos arrived I found myself giving a sort of handover. They helped her gently onto a stretcher, bundled her into the ambulance, then started a closer examination of Irene?s injuries. The man directing traffic waved good-bye,? explaining he had a bus to catch. The nurse was still on the phone, trying to work out if Irene?s son could come from work and help his parents.
Mr Shiny Suit walked over and said goodbye. ?I would stay?,? he says, ?but I have to get to a job interview.? It?s only after he headed off that I realised I didn?t know his name. Right there I sent up a silent prayer that he gets this job. Karma, for God?s sake ?
Two police cars arrived and the driver is trembling. The response was unexpected. One of the officers recognised her immediately ? an old friend ? and proceeded to wrap her up in a huge bear hug. She was shaking, half crying, half laughing at his Dad jokes about meeting her under these circumstances. The other police officer asked me ? now a witness of sorts ? what happened. Once I tell him, it?s clear that no-one is pressing any charges, and attention now turns to the driver. Is she okay?
Are you okay?
Well, no obviously not. There?s a reason you?re going to the cemetary isn?t there? Only we will never know just what those circumstances are. Only that you were lost in your thoughts and didn?t see Irene until it was too late. Irene who was walking where she shouldn?t have been.
The driver was worried that people will recognise her. She?s worked locally for years, she says, everyone knows her. Don?t worry, said her copper mate. What you need is a good cup of tea.
She explained to us then that, like Irene?s husband, her mother is at home, with dementia. What is it about these carers who have no one else? Oh I have my husband, she says. He?s a great help. He?s with her now.
The nurse reported that the son was ambivalent about leaving work to see his mum. Irene by now was insisting they drive her home. Reluctantly the ambos had no other choice but to agree. She was lucid, could walk and couldn?t be told otherwise. I wonder what sort of hell she is in if no one else can look after her husband in an emergency. It troubles me greatly.
The nurse wasn?t satisfied. I?m going to call the son this evening, she explained. Just to see if she got to hospital after all.
As the ambulance pulled away into the traffic, we gathered up our things, then told the driver we will be in touch. We now know where she works ? it won?t be hard to check on her later in the week.
So, after all the excitement, I caught the next bus home and headed into the kitchen and in that time-honoured automatic response of our society, I put on the kettle.
Tea is more than just a meditation in times of strife.? It?s a balm for sorry times. Everyone in that incident had a back story: The nurse who was coming off night shift, already weary but unable to shake the work habits of decades; Mr Shiny Suit who stopped to help when he could least afford to; An old lady who had a family but no-one to help her in what must be an unremitting hell looking after a patient with Alzheimer?s; a lady with unexpressed sadness who just wanted to take flowers to some gravesites.
Tea, besides being a chance to slow down for a few minutes, makes great inroads towards a healing at times like this. Except when it doesn?t. Two supporters, who were without support that day.
Later in the evening I called the nurse. ?You won?t believe it,? she said, ?the son refused to take her to hospital. Five hours in a waiting room, who wants that?? he said?. We both sat on the ends of the phone conversation, silently pondering how the good intentions of so many people could have failed to galvanise those closest to the old woman.
? I know I would have done it differently,? was all I could say in the end. That, and, ?I?m going to visit the driver at her work tomorrow. Just to see she?s okay.?
And when I do, I shall take a sweet treat of some sort. Made with tea because that?s my focal point this moment. Made with love. Made with all the good intentions of the small village that rushed to help. Made as a gentle reminder, that sometimes, even the supporters in our lives need support of their own.
Do you have a story involving a cup of tea at a focal time in your life? Make a cuppa and share it with us.

The reason that I have no friends is simple.
I?m just not a good enough human being to have people in my life. I am, amongst other things; selfish, ungrateful, narcissistic, uncaring, weak, worthless, grotesque, uncompassionate and evil. My voice inflicts pain on everyone I talk to. My body makes people want to vomit. My mind is that of a repulsive freak that brings pain and terror to people?s lives.
Or at least this is what my abuser convinced myself, and others, was the reason I should live an isolated life.
The real reason that I have no friends is slightly more complicated.
I suffer from social anxiety disorder; arguably the least understood anxiety disorder.
?Social anxiety is the fear of social situations and the interaction with other people that can automatically bring on feelings of self-consciousness, judgment, evaluation, and inferiority.
Put another way, social anxiety is the fear and anxiety of being judged and evaluated negatively by other people, leading to feelings of inadequacy, embarrassment, humiliation, and depression.?
Source: The Social Anxiety Network
The most common feature of social anxiety is a constant, intense anxiety that does not go away. An anxiety that manifests itself physiologically with symptoms including: intense fear, racing heart, turning red or blushing, excessive sweating, dry throat and mouth, trembling, swallowing with difficulty, and muscle twitches.
Like most people who suffer from anxiety disorders, someone suffering from social anxiety knows their anxiety is irrational. But knowing something is very different from believing it. Deep in my heart I know I?m none of the things my abuser called me, but her relentless, repetitive abuse made me believe that everything I listed above is who I am. Her words persist in my mind regardless of what I do to counteract them, in much the same way that social anxiety persists, despite facing the fears on a daily basis.
There are seven situations in which someone suffering from social anxiety will experience significant emotional distress. I have, throughout my life, experienced each of these on multiple occasions ? each leading to a reduced level of functioning, especially in the arena of building friendships and relationships.
Any childhood memories of being introduced to new people have dissolved into the sands of time, but when I was a teenager ? when meeting new people is a prerequisite to be accepted ? it was immensely difficult for me. When I joined my new school after moving from Scotland to Wales it took me a long time to start talking to people, with the difficulty increasing to the point of avoidance after my mental health issues took hold.
A similar situation arose when I began backpacking in 1999, with many evenings spent quietly observing the other residents of the hostel, both envious of their ability to engage and angry at my own insecurities. Only when they started talking to me did I begin to communicate, for as with every friend and relationship I?ve ever had, I?ve never had enough control of my anxiety to make the first move.
As with many areas of social anxiety, this inability to communicate often translates to those who don?t understand as a form of snobbish behavior, with many people deciding I thought myself ?too good? to be talking to such ?peasants? ? when in reality it?s the exact opposite. My anxiety drives me to believe I?m not good enough as a person to be around such vibrant, wonderful individuals.
All throughout my life ? being introduced to Louise?s friends upon arriving in Australia, various parties attended throughout those years, having to meet new contacts or prospective employees in various jobs, joining social networking sites in the hope to make new friends, contacting organisations to assist in mental health and/or homelessness issues ? whenever there is the threat or reality of meeting new people I withdraw into my shell like a terrified turtle.
Ever since being bullied at school, which I believe to be a fundamental cause of my anxiety, this is my second biggest fear in the world. I know only too well that words can hurt ? at times, far more than sticks and stones.
Although it is something we all fear ? being social creatures, we want people to like us ? this becomes a major issue when someone actively avoids communication over fear of the perceived inevitable criticism. With this in mind, it shouldn?t be too difficult to realize how it can affect building friendships and relationships.
Unfortunately, as has been written many times in the past, just as I was beginning to get a handle on this irrational fear and open up to both friends and strangers, I ended up in an emotionally abusive relationship.
And that is the worst thing that can happen to someone with social anxiety disorder!
Given that I?m a rather pointless human being who has achieved virtually nothing of note this has never been a huge issue for me. The thought of being the center of attention scares me to the point that I tend to deflect, play down or hide my achievements.
For example:
One of my few moments of pride was the work I produced managing a backpacker hostel many years ago. Although my abuser erased that pride with numerous vicious comments regarding this period (and what I believed to be achievements) I?ve always remembered being the center of attention at my leaving BBQ and the increasing panic that grew in the lead up to my inevitable speech. My words became muddled, my mouth dried and I made myself look like a twat in front of management and staff.
Also, when I had my short story and opinion piece published in 2009 I wrote both under a pseudonym and sent copies to only one person. I never told anyone else for fear of, momentarily, being the center of attention.
My first girlfriend became increasingly frustrated that I?d never write when she was around. She thought I was being elusive and hiding something sinister, where in actual fact, I just can?t write when people are watching me.
The same goes for other areas of my life. I wrote recently of how my fear of being watched on stage ultimately led to me turning down Theatre at A-Level. When I was at a college, I would often head to the darkroom outside of hours as I functioned much better when alone. Even work I undertook at the hostel was easier when people weren?t watching me.
The downside to this is that it leads to all sorts of problems when trying to form relationships. Such behavior makes me appear to be a weird loner, secretive, unable to work as part of a team, and untrustworthy ? whereas in reality, the opposite applies.
Meeting or being in situations involving important people are guaranteed to freak me out. The usual suspects apply:
Police: although I have never committed a crime nor been arrested in any way shape or form.
Judiciary: again, despite never having encountered them, anyone associated with the law freaks me out.
Management: I will explore this in more detail in a later entry to the series.
David Tennant: never met him ? would probably pass out if I did!
But in my mind, there are others:
Librarians: being the guardians of knowledge, librarians have always been intimidating and prone to cause me anxiety.
Academics: a recent comment on The Conversation stated that an interview from an academic was less ferocious than an interview from a journalist. Personally, I would choose an interview from a journalist any day of the year, as I fear whip-smart academics far more than journalists!
Psychiatrists: Arg! Why can?t they just understand I get tongue-tied and confused because I?m being placed in a vulnerable, potentially humiliating situation? If they did, I might not be insane as I am!
Doctors: see psychiatrists above!
Dentists: ditto.
Editors: perhaps because my grasp of grammar would most likely cause even the most kind-natured of editors to spank and send me to the naughty corner, perhaps because I simply envy them, editors are the supreme authority figure to this aspiring writer and therefore?runaway!
When most people think of social encounters they think of parties, or meeting up with friends, few take it the next logical step to be any encounter where social interaction may occur.
There have been times in my life where I have deliberately starved myself rather than walk to the supermarket to buy food.
One time, whilst homeless, I saved for months to secure a motel room but, because I couldn?t bear speaking to the receptionist on that particular day, lost my money by simply not arriving.
As for pre-arranged social encounters, nothing compares to the anxiety surrounding these. If I go I usually end up being so anxious I can?t tell the difference between a Bordeaux and a Claret and spend the entire evening saying nothing but the occasional, incoherent, gargle. If I don?t go, it?s because the anxiety has become so severe I suffer a crippling panic attack and spend the evening flagellating myself for being so weak and worthless. Either way, the chances of meeting new people, are non-existent.
I hated this at school. I hated it at work experience. I hated it at training seminars. I hated it at first aid classes. I hated it at college. I don?t think I will ever not hate it.
When I had to do it at school I?d become tongue-tied and confused; the resulting mumble, oft ridiculed for months afterwards. At work experience (at the age of 15) I was so nervous I admitted ? long before Eccleston, Tennant and Smith made the show must-see television ? that I was a Doctor Who fan; the laughter still haunts me to this day.
By the time I began training seminars I hated this moment so much I would ?accidentally? miss my train or ?accidentally? get a flat tyre purely to arrive late and avoid this cruel hell. Ditto for first aid classes.
As for college, I tried for days to talk to my girlfriend about my fear of this moment in the hope I would receive some understanding, but whenever I did she attacked, knocking my self-esteem so much that on the first night I fumbled my way through my introduction, mixed the names of my favourite film directors (annoyingly, David Fincher and David Mackenzie became Fincher Mackenzie and David David) and accidentally told the class my name was Mitchell. I still don?t know where that came from!
In a world where first impressions are the only thing that matters, fudging this moment immediately puts me on the back foot. Rather than making an impression that creates ?I want to get to know this guy? feelings it becomes the other way around.
This, for the most part, is the story of my life.
No matter what effort I make to overcome this aspect of my life I never seem to be able to get a proper handle on it. It is possible to overcome social anxiety disorder ? as I mentioned, I would have got there had it not been for an abusive relationship ? but the surest way of doing so is through cognitive behavioral therapy.
Unfortunately I?ve never been able to access this particular holy grail of anxiety therapy. My aversion to psychiatrists (I have yet to meet one who seems to grasp the impact this anxiety has on me) means I am left fighting this without support; my anxiety too severe and my life too isolated to navigate the system to obtain effective treatment.
This isn?t to say I?ve given up.
However hopeless and difficult social anxiety may be ? it is beatable!

Samsung Electronics on Wednesday became the first handset maker to announce a smartphone using Microsoft's latest mobile software, making its surprise, hurried announcement just days before the highly anticipated launch of Nokia's version.
The brief announcement at a Berlin electronics show comes amid expectations that smartphone makers may turn increasingly to Windows devices after a U.S. jury decided many of Samsung's Google Android-based phones infringed Apple patents.
The ailing Finnish mobile firm, once the world's leading producer of phones but now struggling to reverse losses, is due to unveil its new Lumia line of smartphones using Windows Phone 8 in New York on Sept. 5.
Samsung's new phone called ATIV S ? tacked onto the end of a long news conference in Berlin that focused on other products ? may elevate expectations for the Lumia. Samsung's ATIV S Windows phone sports a high-end 4.8-inch display, Corning "Gorilla" glass, and an 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera, Microsoft posted on its official blog on Wednesday.
"Expectations for a 40 megapixel or possibly 20 megapixel camera model are running high. If Nokia does not unveil a monster camera handset next week, many will be disappointed," said Tero Kuittinen, analyst at mobile analytics firm Alekstra.
But "this leaves Nokia plenty of room to draw a clear contrast with its upcoming announcement."
Analysts say the introduction of Samsung's Windows phone may be designed to assuage concerns that Microsoft will favor Nokia, whose chief executive Stephen Elop ??himself a former senior Microsoft executive ? has staked its future on the Windows platform.
"The fact Samsung was allowed to be the first to announce is Microsoft's backhanded way of letting other vendors know that Nokia is not getting special treatment," Current Analysis analyst Avi Greengart said.
But Jack Gold, an independent mobile consultant who runs J. Gold Associates, argued Samsung had signaled its commitment to Windows for a while, but Nokia will remain the primary driver of the new breed of Microsoft-powered devices.
Stealing a march
Microsoft gave a preview of its Windows Phone 8 software in June, and promised the first phones would be on the market by the autumn.
Windows Phone 8 looks similar to, and is built on the same core code as Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 operating system, but is not the same product. Windows 8, which will run on tablets and PCs, is scheduled to launch on Oct.?26.
Samsung said the phone would hit stores in the October-November period but did not give the date for sales to start.
"Samsung has crossed the start line first and set the bar for Nokia's launch," said Geoff Blaber, analyst at CCS Insight.
On Wednesday, the Korean corporation also showed off a slew of tablets using Windows 8 software and the second generation of its popular Google Android-based Galaxy Note phone-cum-tablet "phablet" in downtown Berlin.
Samsung has sold some 10 million of its original Galaxy Note devices, creating a new product category which has smaller screen than tablets, but bigger than smartphones.
"I am pretty confident it will even outsell its predecessor," said JK Shin, Samsung's chief of mobile business.
Samsung hopes the new device will take the focus away from its loss of the court case. Apple is now seeking speedy bans on the sale of eight Samsung phones, moving swiftly to turn legal victory into tangible business gain.
Samsung hopes the phablet upgrade will lift any post-Apple gloom at the South Korean group.
"There won't be huge innovative changes in design, but the Note 2 will feature quite a few improvements and enable Samsung to carry on its strong sales momentum in the category," said Lee Sun-tae, an analyst at NH Investment & Securities. "With the launch, Samsung will also be trying to turn around downbeat sentiment after the U.S. legal defeat."
A U.S. federal jury found last week that dozens of Samsung phones had copied critical features of the iPhone, and awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages.
The decision led to speculation that handset makers using Android ? now the world's most popular mobile software ? would be drawn toward Microsoft's platform.
Apple did not include the Note and other newly unveiled Samsung products in its original lawsuit. But the company and its lawyers are expected by many legal experts to try and use last week's legal victory to go after future gadgets, especially because the jury found infringing features in Samsung phones such as pinch-and-zoom and bounce-back ??common in Android.
The new version of the Note will feature a thinner and slightly bigger 5.5-inch screen, powerful quad-core processor, the latest version of the Android operating system called Jellybean, and improved stylus function.

While Westport teardowns are nothing new, and some houses with barely a whimper go the way of the wrecking ball, the possibility of two 19th century Victorians being razed has one neighborhood up in arms.
Neighbors say that plans to level the two-and-a-half story houses at 14 and 20 Lincoln St. and to replace them with a parking lot will gut their neighborhood.
Their attorney also says it would deplete the town?s moderate income housing stock and violates the Town Plan of Conservation and Development.

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac barely stirred Florida Keys residents from their fabled nonchalance Sunday, while the Gulf Coast braced for the possibility that the sprawling storm will strengthen into a dangerous hurricane by the time it makes landfall there.
It was on course to strike land on the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a powerful storm that crippled New Orleans and the Gulf Coast and became a symbol of government ineptitude. Forecasters expected Isaac to pass the Keys late Sunday before turning northwest and striking as a Category 2 hurricane somewhere between New Orleans and the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday.
The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane warning for a large swath of the northern Gulf Coast from east of Morgan City, La. ? which includes the New Orleans area ? to Destin, Fla. A Category 2 hurricane has sustained winds of between 96 and 110 mph (154 to 177 kph).
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal called a state of emergency and officials in St. Charles Parish near New Orleans told its 53,000 residents to leave ahead of the storm. Jindal also said he may skip a speaking engagement later this week at the Republican National Convention in Tampa unless the threat to his state subsides. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has canceled his trip to the convention because of Isaac, and Florida Gov. Rick Scott also gave up his speaking engagement.
Elected leaders' vigilance toward tropical storms has heightened in the seven years since Katrina struck. Criticism was leveled at officials reaching all the way to the White House over what was seen as the federal government's slow and bungled response to the storm that killed 1,800.
An emergency declaration was also issued in Mississippi by Gov. Phil Bryant amid concerns of storm surge threatening low-lying areas. Oil companies began evacuating workers from offshore oil rigs and cutting production in advance of Isaac.
The storm was on a course to pass west of Tampa, but it had already disrupted the Republicans' schedule there because of the likelihood of heavy rain and strong winds that extended more than 200 miles from its center.
Even before reaching hurricane strength, Isaac caused considerable inconvenience, with more than 550 flights canceled at Miami International Airport and about 150 from Fort Lauderdale's airport. There were scattered power outages from Key West to Fort Lauderdale affecting more than 16,000 customers, and flooding occurred in low-lying areas.
Gov. Rick Scott said at a news conference Sunday evening that only minor damage was reported from Isaac.
Wind gusts of 60 mph were reported as far north as Pompano Beach, north of Fort Lauderdale. But while officials urged residents in southeast Florida to stay home, that recommendation was ignored by surfers and joggers on Miami Beach and shoppers at area malls.
In Key West, Emalyn Mercer rode her bike while decked out with a snorkel and mask, inflatable arm bands and a paddle, just for a laugh. She rode with Kelly Friend, who wore a wet suit, dive cap and lobster gloves.
"We're just going for a drink," Mercer said.
"With the ones that are brave enough like us," Friend added.
Along famed Duval Street, many stores, bars and restaurants closed, the cigar rollers and palm readers packed up, and just a handful of drinking holes remained open.
But people posed for pictures at the Southernmost Point, while at a marina Dave Harris and Robyn Roth took her dachshund for a walk and checked out boats rocking along the waterfront.
"Just a summer day in Key West," Harris said.
That kind of ho-hum attitude extended farther up the coast. Edwin Reeder swung by a gas station in Miami Shores ? not for fuel, but drinks and snacks.
"This isn't a storm," he said. "It's a rain storm."
With a laugh, Reeder said he has not stocked up aside from buying dog and cat food.
The forecast wasn't funny, however. Isaac was expected to draw significant strength from the warm, open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, but there remained much uncertainty about its path.
The Gulf Coast hasn't been hit by a hurricane since 2008, when Dolly, Ike and Gustav all struck the region. Florida, meanwhile, has been hurricane-free since it was struck four times each in 2004 and 2005.
Hurricane center forecasters are uncertain of the storm's path because two of their best computer models now track the storm on opposite sides of a broad cone. One model has Isaac going well west and the other well east. For the moment, the predicted track goes up the middle.
Florida Panhandle residents stocked up on water and gasoline, and at least one Pensacola store ran out of flashlight models and C and D batteries. Scott Reynolds, who lives near the water in Gulf Breeze, filled his car trunk with several cases of water, dozens of power bars and ramen noodles.
"Cigarettes ? I'm stocking up on those too," he said.
Forecasters stressed that the storm's exact location remained extremely uncertain ? a fact not lost on Tony Varnado as he cut sheets of plywood to board up his family's beach home on Pensacola Beach. With the storm's projected path creeping farther to the west, the Mandeville, La., resident joked he might be boarding up the wrong house.
"I'm going to head back that way as soon as we are done here to make sure we are prepared if hits there," he said.
Before reaching Florida, Isaac was blamed for eight deaths in Haiti and two more in the Dominican Republic, and downed trees and power lines in Cuba. It bore down on the Keys two days after the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, which caused more than $25 billion in damage just north of the island chain.
In Tampa, convention officials said they would convene briefly on Monday, then recess until Tuesday afternoon, when the storm was expected to have passed. Scott canceled his plans to attend convention events on Sunday and Monday.
At Miami International Airport, more than 550 flights Sunday were canceled. Inside the American Airlines terminal, people craned for a look out of one of the doors as a particularly strong band of Isaac began lashing the airport with strong rain and high wind.
Michele Remillard said she was trying to get a seat on a flight to New Orleans, well aware the city could be affected by Isaac later this week. In coastal Plaquemines Parish, La., crews rushed to protect the levees that keep floodwaters from reaching that New Orleans suburb.
"It's a little scary," said Remillard, who was in town for a wedding. "But I need to get home, you know? And if the storm comes my way again, who knows, I might have to come back here."
As of 11 p.m. EDT, the storm was centered about 510 miles (820 kilometers) southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Isaac had top sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph) and was moving to the northwest at 15 mph (24 kph).
Tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 205 miles (335 km) from the center, meaning storm conditions are possible even in places not in Isaac's direct path.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Being physically fit during your 30s, 40s, and 50s not only helps extend lifespan, but it also increases the chances of aging healthily, free from chronic illness, investigators at UT Southwestern Medical Center and The Cooper Institute have found.
For decades, research has shown that higher cardiorespiratory fitness levels lessen the risk of death, but it previously had been unknown just how much fitness might affect the burden of chronic disease in the most senior years -- a concept known as morbidity compression.
"We've determined that being fit is not just delaying the inevitable, but it is actually lowering the onset of chronic disease in the final years of life," said Dr. Jarett Berry, assistant professor of internal medicine and senior author of the study available online in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Researchers examined the patient data of 18,670 participants in the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study, research that contains more than 250,000 medical records maintained over a 40-year span. These data were linked with the patients' Medicare claims filed later in life from ages 70 to 85. Analyses during the latest study showed that when patients increased fitness levels by 20 percent in their midlife years, they decreased their chances of developing chronic diseases -- congestive heart failure, Alzheimer's disease, and colon cancer -- decades later by 20 percent.
"What sets this study apart is that it focuses on the relationship between midlife fitness and quality of life in later years. Fitter individuals aged well with fewer chronic illnesses to impact their quality of life," said Dr. Benjamin Willis of The Cooper Institute, first author on the study.
This positive effect continued until the end of life, with more-fit individuals living their final five years of life with fewer chronic diseases. The effects were the same in both men and women.
These data suggest that aerobic activities such as walking, jogging, or running translates not only into more years of life but also into higher quality years, compressing the burden of chronic illness into a shorter amount of time at the end of life, Dr. Berry said.
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), adults should get at least 2 ? hours of moderate to intense aerobic activity each week to ensure major heart and overall health benefits.
UT Southwestern has a partnership with The Cooper Institute, the preventive medicine research and educational nonprofit located at the Cooper Aerobics Center, to develop a joint scientific medical research program aimed at improving health and preventing a wide range of chronic diseases. One of the world's most extensive databases, the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study includes detailed information from clinic visits that has been collected since Dr. Kenneth Cooper founded the institute and clinic in 1970.
Other UT Southwestern researchers involved in the study include Dr. David Leonard, assistant professor of clinical sciences, and Ang Gao, a biostatistical consultant in internal medicine.
The study was funded with support from the NHLBI and the American Heart Association.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Insurgents beheaded 17 people at a party in a Taliban-controlled area, and an Afghan soldier killed two U.S. troops, bringing the two-day death toll Monday to about 30.
Near-daily attacks by militants and increasingly frequent deadly violence against NATO troops by their Afghan allies highlight an embarrassing failure of Western policy: After nearly 12 years of military intervention, the country is not pacified. Once the United States and other countries pull out their troops, chaos seems almost certain to return and Taliban domination in large parts of the country is hardly implausible.
The beheadings occurred in southern Helmand, the same province where more than 100 insurgents attacked an Afghan army checkpoint and killed 10 soldiers.
Helmand was the centerpiece of President Barack Obama's surge, when he ordered 33,000 additional U.S troops to Afghanistan to help the military with a counterinsurgency plan. That plan hoped to turn the tide in Helmand and neighboring Kandahar and establish the governmental institutions that would allow the Afghan government to take control of the Taliban heartland.
Two years later, however, Helmand is still so lawless that Afghan government officials couldn't even go to the Taliban-controlled town where the beheadings were reported. Many Afghans in the south, the Taliban's birthplace and the home of the country's Pashtun speaking population, are leery of a government that many consider to be corrupt and ineffective.
The problem is compounded by a rapid reduction in American and international aid, which fueled most of the growth in the south in recent years. Afghanistan, one of the world's 10 poorest countries, has received nearly $60 billion in civilian aid since 2002. Now it stands to receive $16 billion, or about $4 billion a year, in the next four years. By comparison, the U.S. alone spent that much in 2010.
Analysts also say that a public worn down by a war that began just a month after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks no longer cares about Afghanistan, and that the war has slipped off the radar screens and is now considered by many to be over.
"The problem with this attitude is that Afghanistan ? or whatever the crisis may be ? has a life of its own. Men and women keep dying, and U.S. policies keep accelerating the centrifugal forces that are driving the country toward civil conflict, which may have profound implications for future regional and international security," said Sarah Chaynes, a senior associate with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, in a commentary published Sunday.
"Choosing to ignore problems is rarely a good way to solve them," said Chaynes, who spent nearly a decade in Afghanistan and served as an adviser to the U.S. military.
Most of the problems are likely to surface in Helmand and the south, where most of the surge troops will be removed as part of a drawdown that will reduce U.S. forces in Afghanistan from a peak of nearly 103,000 last year to about 68,000 in October. Other nations, including Britain, are also drawing down in the south, and nearly all foreign military forces are to leave the country by the end of 2014.
The forces are to be replaced by Afghan army and police units, but many have questioned the effectiveness of a force that has high desertion rates, is often poorly disciplined, and is supposed to reach a high of about 350,000 at the end of the year.
Another growing concern is the loyalty of the Afghan troops that the U.S. has spent more than $22 billion to train in recent years.
Insider attacks have been a problem for the U.S.-led military coalition for years, but they recently have become a crisis. There have been at least 33 such attacks so far this year, killing 42 coalition members, mostly Americans. Last year, there were 21 attacks, killing 35; and in 2010 there were 11 attacks with 20 deaths.
In the latest such attack, two American soldiers were killed in eastern Laghman province.
There were conflicting reports about whether the attack was intentional or accidental.
In Washington, a U.S. Defense Department official said the Afghan soldier fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the Americans, and that this seemed to indicate that it was an intentional act. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because an investigation is under way, said he was unaware of any indications that the shooting was accidental.
Noman Hatefi, a spokesman for the Afghan army corps in eastern Afghanistan, said a group of U.S. and Afghan soldiers came under an insurgent attack in Laghman province. He said the two Americans were killed when an Afghan soldier fell and accidentally discharged his weapon.
"He didn't do this intentionally. But then the commander of the (Afghan) unit started shouting at him, 'What did you do? You killed two NATO soldiers!' And so he threw down his weapon and started to run," Hatefi said.
The U.S. troops had already called in air support to help with the insurgent attack and the aircraft fired on the escaping soldier, killing him, Hatefi said.
The chief spokesman for NATO forces in the country said coalition forces were not pulling back from collaborating with the Afghans because of the attacks.
"We are not going to reduce the close relationship with our Afghan partners," Brig. Gen. Gunter Katz told reporters in the capital.
There were also conflicting reports about the other violence.
In the beheadings, a local government official initially said the victims were civilians at a celebration late Sunday involving music and dancing in Helmand's Musa Qala district. The official, Neyamatullah Khan, said the Taliban killed the partygoers for flouting the extreme brand of Islam embraced by the militants.
But a provincial government official said later that those killed were caught up in a fight between two Taliban commanders over two women, who were among the dead. Daoud Ahmadi, a spokesman for the provincial government, said shooting broke out during the fight. He said it was unclear whether the music and dancing triggered the violence and whether the dead were all civilians or possibly included some fighters.
Ahmadi said all of the bodies were decapitated, but it was not clear if they had been shot first.
The Taliban denied any responsibility for the attack, which was condemned by President Hamid Karzai, by the head of the U.S.-led NATO coalition, by the U.N. and by the European Union.
"No Talib have killed any civilians. Neither were Taliban commanders fighting each other. We don't know about this thing. Whether it happened or not, we were not involved," said Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi.
The Taliban have controlled large parts of Musa Qala, a district encompassing more than 100 villages, since 2001. They enforce the same strict interpretation of Islamic law that was imposed during Taliban rule of Afghanistan from 1996-2001.
U.S. Marines have battled the Taliban since they arrived in the region about two years ago. Although U.S. and foreign forces made significant gains in the south, insurgents still wield significant power in the area, and it is expected to increase as the Marines and other forces withdraw.
As a consequence, many Afghans and international observers have expressed concerns the Taliban will try to re-impose strict Islamic justice. Under the Taliban, all music and film was banned as un-Islamic, and women were barred from leaving their homes without a male relative as an escort.
Another sign that the Taliban may be returning in strength is the attack that killed 10 Afghan soldiers. The attack occurred late Sunday at a checkpoint in Helmand's Washir district, said provincial spokesman Daoud Ahmadi.
On Monday, a truck bomb in Kandahar, the south's largest city, killed two civilians and wounded the provincial police chief.
Kandahar provincial spokesman Jawed Faisal said the police chief, Gen. Abdul Raziq, was "slightly injured" but did not provide further details. He said the bomb appeared to have targeted Raziq, one of the most powerful men in Kandahar.
Faisal said 16 civilians were wounded in the blast.

First moonwalker Neil Armstrong and President Barack Obama get their picture taken on July 20, 2009, during an Oval Office meeting to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, was remembered by friends, colleagues and admirers as a man who made his country believe anything was possible with ingenuity and dedication.
A few examples from the outpouring of expressions for Armstrong, who died today at the age of 82:
President Barack Obama: "Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Neil Armstrong."
"Neil was among the greatest of American heroes ??not just of his time, but of all time.? When he and his fellow crew members lifted off aboard Apollo 11 in 1969, they carried with them the aspirations of an entire nation.? They set out to show the world that the American spirit can see beyond what seems unimaginable ? that with enough drive and ingenuity, anything is possible. And when Neil stepped foot on the surface of the moon for the first time, he delivered a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten.
"Today, Neil's spirit of discovery lives on in all the men and women who have devoted their lives to exploring the unknown ??including those who are ensuring that we reach higher and go further in space. That legacy will endure ??sparked by a man who taught us the enormous power of one small step."
Buzz Aldrin, astronaut who was lunar module pilot on Apollo 11: "I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Neil Armstrong today. Neil and I trained together as technical partners but were also good friends who will always be connected through our participation in the mission of Apollo 11. Whenever I look at the moon it reminds me of the moment over four decades ago when I realized that even though we were farther away from earth than two humans had ever been, we were not alone.
"Virtually the entire world took that memorable journey with us. I know I am joined by millions of others in mourning the passing of a true American hero and the best pilot I ever knew. My friend Neil took the small step but giant leap that changed the world and will forever be remembered as a landmark moment in human history. I had truly hoped that in 2019, we would be standing together along with our colleague Mike Collins to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of our moon landing. Regrettably, this is not to be. Neil will most certainly be there with us in spirit.
"On behalf of the Aldrin family, we extend our deepest condolences to Carol and the entire Armstrong family. I will miss my friend Neil as I know our fellow citizens and people around world will miss this foremost aviation and space pioneer. May he rest in peace.?
NBC's Jay Barbree, Brian Williams and former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly reflect on the life of Neil Armstrong.
Michael Collins, the astronaut who piloted the Apollo 11 command module and circled the moon while Aldrin and Armstrong went to its surface: "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly."
John Glenn, former U.S. senator and the first American in orbit, who went through jungle training in Panama with Armstrong: "When I think of Neil, I think of someone who for our country was dedicated enough to dare greatly."
Charles Bolden, NASA administrator: "As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own. Besides being one of America's greatest explorers, Neil carried himself with a grace and humility that was an example to us all. When President Kennedy challenged the nation to send a human to the moon, Neil Armstrong accepted without reservation. As we enter this next era of space exploration, we do so standing on the shoulders of Neil Armstrong. We mourn the passing of a friend, fellow astronaut and true American hero."
Mitt Romney, presumptive Republican presidential candidate: "Neil Armstrong today takes his place in the hall of heroes. With courage unmeasured and unbounded love for his country, he walked where man had never walked before. The moon will miss its first son of earth. I met and spoke with Neil Armstrong just a few weeks ago ??his passion for space, science and discovery, and his devotion to America will inspire me through my lifetime."
Rep. Paul Ryan, R- Wis., presumptive Republican vice presidential candidate: "We lost a great American today. ? This is a man who proved that we can imagine big things, who showed that in America you can set very lofty goals and accomplish them. Neil Armstrong is the epitome of American vision, American power, American creativity and how we can set the horizons and achieve our goals."
Leon Panetta, secretary of defense: "We are bidding farewell to one of our own.? As a decorated Korean War veteran, as an astronaut for NASA, and as the first man to walk on the moon, Neil inspired generations of Americans to believe that as a nation we are capable of achieving greatness that only comes with determination, perseverance, and hard work. As a true pioneer, his one small step showed all mankind the great feats we can accomplish when we set ourselves to the task.? While Neil is no longer with us, his spirit and his legacy of American achievement and national pride will live forever."
Nancy Conrad, widow of Apollo 12 commander Pete Conrad and founder and chairman of the Conrad Foundation: ?Neil was a humble and personable man ... although he was the first man to walk on the moon, he never asserted his own ego into a conversation. Neil will always be remembered for the inspiration he gave to all of us to press on and to achieve our own personal greatness. He was the personification of the Giant Leap for mankind. Neil was not only a gentleman, he was a gentle man.?
See images from the career of astronaut and American hero Neil Armstrong.
Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., chairman of the Senate Science and Space subcommittee, who flew on the shuttle Columbia in 1986: "Neil Armstrong understood that we should reach beyond the stars. His 'one giant leap for mankind' was taken by a giant of a man."
John Boehner, R-Ohio, House speaker: ?"A true hero has returned to the heavens to which he once flew. Neil Armstrong blazed trails not just for America, but for all of mankind. He inspired generations of boys and girls worldwide not just through his monumental feat, but with the humility and grace with which he carried himself to the end. Ohio has lost one of her proudest sons. Humanity has gained a legend."
Rep. Ralph Hall, R-Texas, chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee: "Neil Armstrong was an inspiration to all Americans, not only for his role in one of the proudest moments in American history, but also for his courage, grace and humility. He exemplified all that is great about mankind, and he will forever be revered as a true American hero."?
Kenneth Murphy, president of the Moon Society: ?In Lunam Aeternum: Neil Armstrong (1930-2012) may be gone, but he will forever be with us.?
Dan Pastuf, chairman, Students for the Exploration and Development of Space: ??Many students first learn about space exploration through the great accomplishments of the past, like Armstrong?s historic and heroic landing on the moon. This was a journey that he himself said only had a 50-50 chance of success. Because of the groundwork Armstrong laid down, young people have been inspired throughout the world to pursue the limits of where we can explore.?
Elliot H. Pulham, CEO, Space Foundation: ?Neil Armstrong was a humble, soft-spoken hero who never forgot that it was the will of the nation and the tireless work of thousands of scientists and engineers that enabled him to take that famous 'giant leap' for mankind. ? Armstrong's quiet resolve and unyielding belief in the importance of exploration will be missed by a grateful nation.?
Lon Rains, chairman, Coalition for Space Exploration: ?Neil was a humble man who devoted his life and his career to serving a greater cause. From the children who strive to explore the stars to those who devote their lives to reaching beyond the bonds of earth, one can only hope to follow in his footsteps."

During a five year period (2001-2005), a group of physical and cultural anthropologists along with an ethnographic photographer (Jeanne E. Arnold, Anthony P. Graesch, Enzo Ragazzini, and Elinor Ochs) undertook an in-depth study of contemporary family life as a part of the UCLA Center on Everyday Lives of Families.? Some of their findings are published in a short book?Life at Home in the Twenty-First Century: 32 Families Open their Doors.? The book itself is a dizzying array of information, beautifully depicted in ways that illustrate the rhythms of household life, transformations in social interactions between family members that may not have been anticipated by the architects who designed the homes they live in, the massive collections of stuff that American families collect and consume, and new data helping to understand both what members of the household understand their homes and how they feel inside of them.
The study itself is not generalizable for a number of reasons.? For one, the sample size is only 32 families.? All of the families self-identify as ?middle class? (a problematic measure), representing a broad range of neighborhoods in southern California, including a range of ethnic and racial groups, with various occupations.? Most of the families were heterosexual, but two of the families were not.? As the authors put it:
Each family that joined the study consists of two parents who both work full time (or close to it), and two or three children, one of whom is 7-12 years old.? We sought families that were negotiating the many challenges associated with having both parents in the workforce while they were raising young children. (17)
The data collected is the really interesting part of this study.? In addition to interviews, with family members, video documentation of their homes, photographs and counts of all of the objects and rooms in the homes, site visits at various points throughout the day, house history questionnaires, detailed architectural floor plans of the homes (included maps of when and how various rooms and spaces were used during the study), the team also had each family use a video camera alone and provide a self-guided tour through their home describing the various rooms as they deemed fit.
The premise of their study is eminently sociological (or anthropological depending on who you?re asking).? As the authors write,
The degree to which we are affected by our domestic environments?the internal configurations of houses and the furnishings and objects in and around them?is frequently underestimated.? Residential buildings profoundly shape the behavior of people.? Individuals who live in homes of distinct forms and contents internalize a spectrum of spatial and social rules regarding appropriate activities there.? They become socialized via cultural norms and kind to be sure, but also through interactions with their furnishings and built surroundings. (19)
A lot of the book highlighted some findings that we might have anticipated.? Families in the study had a lot of stuff.? Their homes were saturated.? For instance, close to 90% of the square footage available in garages in the study was used for the overload of stuff from the house.? These respondents parked on the street not because they want to?they have to.? This is slightly more than the national figure that is closer to 3/4 of family home garages.
An interesting gendered finding buried here.? When interviewed, both women and men stated that the messes in their homes (often partially created simply by owning more than their homes were designed to hold) caused them considerable stress.? But cortisol tests were administered throughout the study and this data indicated that women?s physiological health was harmed by the mess much more than men?s (father?s were ?relatively unaffected by mess,? p. 26).
Homes have also become much more child-centered over the course of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.? Children?s toys, artwork, tastes, and desires are now a much greater part of the household than for previous generations or for cultures less like our own.? This likely has something to do with the ways we buy for kids in the U.S.? While the United States contains just a bit more than 3% of all of the children in the world, we consume about 40% of the toys that are globally produced.
Families don?t eat dinner together as often as you might think?nor, interestingly, as often as they might self-report.? 50% of the families in the study stated that they ?always eat dinner together,? while only 16% stated that they ?never eat dinner together.?? After collecting the data, this team found that about 17% of families always ate together (or almost always), while about 1/4 families never at together.
Leisure time was a scarce resource in these families.? More often than not, it was something that members of these families had for fleeting moments throughout the day, rather than in extended periods of time.? Most parents spent a great deal of money on their back yards and gave them a great deal of attention in the self-guided tours, but research showed that parents hardly ever used these spaces and children used them roughly an hour a week.
The most important thing I learned from this book (which confirmed my interests and desires if I ever do own and renovate a home) is that the kitchen is?without a doubt?the most important room in a home.? We spend more time (while awake) in the kitchen than in any other room in the home.? This is interesting and important because a great majority of American families live in homes which were designed roughly 30-50 years ago.? Kitchens were used very different among those families than they are today.? They were smaller, more closed off, intended for use by one person.? These families felt cramped and closed off in their kitchens in ways that previous generations may not have (primarily because of use).
Single bathrooms were also a norm in many of these homes.? Many families struggled to explain why a home would be designed with only one bathroom.? I think this has to do with two separate issues.? First, as Americans, I think many of us think that if we can have more of something, then we should.? But also, previous generations of families living in these homes may not have experienced the struggles of a morning routine in which everyone in a 5-person family has to get up, get showered, get dressed, and get fed on a tight schedule.? Many homes have yet to reflect these economic demands and changes in the workplace.? Interestingly, many families flexibly negotiated the bathroom, and parents used these moments as a time to teach young children about self-care and hygiene.? In this process, ?Children learn how to take turns, how to be considerate of others? needs, now to respect privacy, and how to share limited resources? (103).
So, despite the lack of generalizability, the study itself collected a massive amount of information to study the ways families live.? They put it this way: ?A lesson emerging from the L.A. study is that while material affluence signals personal pleasure and economic success, it also entails hidden costs? (161).? I?ve written before about the history of home design that took women?s considerations of architecture and space into account (here) as making the home more comfortable for all of its inhabitants.
What kind of homes do today?s families need?? In what ways is the culture of consumption in the U.S. making it possible or impossible to be comfortable in their homes?? It?s a fascinating area of study and the ways in which spaces in the home become gendered is a small piece of this work.
