Have you ever read anything online that someone wrote without really knowing much about the subject?

Hmmm? only every day, right?

Like all the ?make money online? blogs that are written by people who haven?t made a dime online.

Or all those SEO bloggers who come to MY blog to ask ME the simplest SEO questions and then take my answers to their clients and sell themselves as SEO experts?

Or that A-list blogger (and no, I won?t tell you who it is) who is a very well-recognized traffic conversion expert, whose posts you most likely read and admire, and yet when I asked that blogger what they used to split test their results, the response was:

?I just wing it most of the times.?

I was speechless when I heard that?

However, you and I are a different breed.

We talk the talk, yes, but we also walk the walk.

That?s why I do so many experiments on my blog.

That?s why I publish my monthly income reports.

And that?s why I constantly look for new ways to generate traffic to my blog SO THAT I can teach you how to do the same for your sites.

Yes, I am good with traffic.

However, traffic is only one side of equation when it comes down to building a successful online business.

The other one is MONEY, i.e. the ability to successfully convert that traffic into a monetized sales funnel.

And that?s what I am not that great at.

Yet.

Out of all the ways to monetize a site, creating a product, and more specifically an information product like an ebook, is the best way to go.

Everyone who?s anyone online says so:

I, on the other hand, have been talking about writing an ebook only? hmm.. since last Christmas, and still nothing.

Can you relate?

And what is my problem you might ask?

If I pass all the cliche excuses (lack of time, lack of inspiration, sleep, world hunger, etc.), it boils down to this question:

Will the effort of writing an ebook really pay off?

Of course, writing an ebook, even if you distribute it for free, has a lot of benefits, but let?s be realistic (or materialistic, I should say) for a minute:

Does writing an ebook = $?

I am sure I am not the only one who is curious to know the answer to that question, so I decided to ask a friend of mine, the omnipresent Kristi Hines of Kikolani.com, what her thoughts on the subject were.

What Makes Kristi Hines an Expert?

1.?? Kristi walks the walk ? she published her first ebook Blog Post Promotion: The Ultimate Guide (aff) not too long ago.

2.?? Her ebook was actually worth reading ? somewhat of a rarity these days.

3.?? Low-key promotion: I didn?t see her do an extensive launch of any kind or write a mile-long sales page ? great news for us, busy bloggers.

4.?? Since Kristi is so good at promotion, I knew she?d promote this blog post and thus bring some fresh blood to my blog.

Oops! Have I just said that out loud?

Kristi Hines on ?Why Write an Ebook??

1. Why write an eBook?

There are tons of great reasons to write an eBook.

• It?s a great way to monetize your blog if you decide to sell it.
• It?s also a great way to capture subscribers on your mailing list if you decide to give it as a freebie.
• There?s a good chance that, as a blogger, you already have a ton of content that would fit perfectly as an eBook.
• Your audience will appreciate it because they can consume your content all in one place vs. hopping around your blog archives or, if you?re like me, trying to find everything you write from one website to another.
• If you go the Kindle publishing route, you open yourself up to an audience on Amazon, which is pretty huge.
• If you hope to get a book deal with a major publisher, this at least shows you have experience writing more than just blog posts.

2. How did you choose the topic ? did you have the ?evergreen? aspect of it in mind?

I really didn?t have evergreen in mind.

In actuality, it?s hard to be evergreen with anything in online marketing due to the changes and downfalls in great services.

For example, early on in my eBook, I talk about how to use PostRank to find awesome topic ideas.

That service was bought out by Google and subsequently died out this May and I?m still searching for a replacement.

Yes, there?s one on the horizon, but they?re stingy about their beta invites thus far.

More than thinking about evergreen, I was thinking about what people really needed information on NOW.

At the time, there wasn?t an eBook (that I know of) that focused on promoting a single piece of content.

Lots of eBooks on overall blog promotion, but nothing for those who might be promoting freelance work, guest posts, or other content that may not be on a site they own.

3. Any tips on writing an eBook more efficiently (things you wish you knew beforehand) would be great.

I don?t know about efficiently, but one trap I was caught in (and still am caught in) is not just writing in little portions.

Sometimes the thought of creating an eBook is overwhelming because of the amount of content you have to either compile and update or create from scratch.

It feels like something that will be extremely time consuming ? because it is.

But you can?t put it off just because you know you won?t be able to finish it a day or two after you start it.

You have to just learn to write bits and pieces here and there until it all comes together, unless you do have the fortune of taking an entire week off to just blast it out.

4. Design: how much does it really matter and how did you go about designing yours?

I think design makes a big difference ? you can generally tell when an eBook has been professionally edited and designed, from cover to content layout.

I?m? a minimalist, so I was OK with something simple.

I just bought a program that generated pretty simple covers for $47 called eCoverCreator3D.

While it got the job done, it wasn?t perfect and I spent a good bit of time playing with it in Gimp to not only get the cover right, but also design the banners.

I?m sure they would have come out much better if I had just went with a designer, and I probably will go with outsourcing the design for my next eBook just to avoid the hassle and have a nicer designed product.

5. How did you choose the affiliate platform to promote it?

As someone who does a bit of affiliate promotions, I knew that eJunkie (aff) was the easiest one to get payments from.

Unlike other systems, affiliates don?t have to wait until they hit a certain revenue to get their commissions ? if someone just makes $5 in June, I can pay them $5 in July.

I?m sure it?s easier as a seller to use other systems as you don?t have to manage payouts monthly, but I don?t mind ? it?s just a monthly reminder in my calendar to download a text file, upload it to Paypal, and send payments.

Plus it?s inexpensive for sellers too ? I only pay $5 per month vs. paying $500 up front or giving a certain percentage of sales to the platform.

6. How did you find affiliates?

I didn?t do a terribly big launch ? I just emailed my list about the fact I was to release a book, asked a few people I knew if they would be willing to do a review, and then opened up the pre-sales page with an easy to find link to the affiliate program.

7. How often do you think you?ll have to update it?

So far, I?ve updated my eBook three times ? two minor updates and one major one to catch up with all of the changes to social media plus new networks and commenting systems that one could use to promote their blog posts upon.

It could probably use an overhaul every six months realistically with all of the new things that come out in the online marketing world.

8. Any clever tips on how to promote it? (in addition to reading your book )

I didn?t do a major launch like other online marketers do ? it was about two or three emails to my list, two or three blog posts on my site, and that was about it.

Having a good sales page really makes a difference.

I might be able to do better if I got into long sales letters and videos, but really I just promoted my book like I promote everything else ? very straightforward vs. sales hype.

I think a good majority of promotion came from my wonderful affiliates ? if you get good affiliates, they really do the work for you in return for their commission.

Offer good affiliate commission, and you?ll be set!

9. Revenue: did it pay off? If you can reveal any concrete numbers, that would be great.

It definitely paid off.

Considering the low amount of promotion I did for it, I have earned over $6,000 after affiliate commission payouts so far, which isn?t too shabby I think.

10. Is this something you?d ?rinse and repeat?? Any future eBooks coming?

Yes, definitely.

I know that I would be earning more if I kept launching eBooks regularly vs. one every two years, which is what I?m currently on track to do.

I have one ebook in the works?

My main conflict is that, being a freelance writer, I spend more time writing for clients than I do myself.

It?s just about getting starting and doing it piece by piece until it?s all put together.

Hockey: Britain face Argentina after sour Falklands row

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's hockey face-off with Argentina on Monday gives the higher-ranked hosts a chance to avenge an earlier defeat this year and marks the latest twist in a sporting rivalry stemming from a bloody dispute over a tiny south Atlantic archipelago.

Diplomatic relations between the two nations have soured this year, the 30th anniversary of their brief war over the British-run Falkland Islands, with Buenos Aires pushing hard to have the islands recognized as Argentinean territory.

Britain has refused to back down, arguing that the destiny of the islands, called Las Malvinas in Argentina, should be decided by their 3,000 inhabitants.

Those bitter territorial tensions have spilled over into the world of sport, with media on both sides of the ocean hamming up the significance of battles on the field of play.

British soccer fans still bear a grudge over Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" goal - when he punched the ball into the net - which helped Argentina put an end to England's World Cup dreams in 1986, just four years after the Falklands war.

Argentina then touched a nerve in May with a state-supported television advertisement showing a hockey player training in the Falklands. The video ended with the voiceover: "To compete on English soil, we are training on Argentine soil."

Although the player featured in the advertisement, Fernando Zylberberg, did not make Argentina's Olympic hockey squads, Britain accused Argentina of abusing the Games for political purposes.

British Prime Minister David Cameron stirred things up in June warning Argentina that Britain stood "ready and willing to stand up for the Falkland Islanders at any time".

The two teams will play at 1900 local time (1800 GMT) in their first match since Argentina, ranked 9th in the world, beat Britain, world number four, in June.

Britain are tipped to win the match but media attention will likely focus more on politics. The two teams have little history together, having only met three times in Olympic Games, all of which the British side won.

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner will not attend the Games and media have reported her telling Argentina's 142 Olympic athletes at their send-off not to stage any Falklands protests in London.

The Argentine national Olympic Committee quickly distanced itself from the video in May.

Minneapolis activists getting ready to march on the RNC | Fight Back!

Minneapolis, MN ? Twin Cities activists came together for a fundraising party here, July 27, to help pay the transportation costs for the vans that are heading to the massive march on the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida. The event, organized by Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), brought in more than $600.

?In 2008, we helped organize a powerful demonstration at the RNC here in Minnesota,? said Tracy Molm of SDS. ?This August, Minnesotans will be going to Tampa to send the Republicans a message. We want good jobs, health care, affordable education, equality and peace.?

Linden Gawboy of the Welfare Rights Committee is helping to coordinate the trip to Tampa. ?Sign up for the trip to this historic protest. The rich and their bought and paid for politicians are waging a war on poor and working people. The RNC is the place where we are going to fight back.?

Syrian rebels survive onslaught in key city of Aleppo

BEIRUT (AP) ? BEIRUT (AP) ? The Syrian government launched an offensive Saturday to retake rebel-held neighborhoods in the nation's commercial hub of Aleppo, unleashing artillery, tanks and helicopter gunships against poorly armed opposition fighters.

Yet after a day of fighting, the rag-tag rebel forces remained in control of their neighborhoods in Syria's largest city, said activists, suggesting they had successfully fought off the government's initial assault.

The international community has raised an outcry about a possible massacre in this city of 3 million but acknowledged there was little they could do to stop the bloodshed. The foreign minister of Russia, a powerful ally of Syria, said it was "simply unrealistic" for the Syrian regime to cede control.

The state-controlled al-Watan newspaper celebrated the assault with a banner headline proclaiming the fight for Aleppo "the mother of all battles."

The rebels are estimated to control between a third and a half of the neighborhoods in this sprawling city, especially a cluster in the northeast around Sakhour neighborhood and in the southwest.

They began their attempt to wrest this key city from the government's control a week ago. About 162 people have been killed, mostly civilians, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which does not include soldiers in its toll. Some 19,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011, estimated the group.

For Saturday, activists estimate that at least two dozen have died so far in the day's fighting.

Local activist Mohammed Saeed said the rebels have managed to keep the regime's tanks at bay so far with rocket-propelled grenades.

"The army hasn't been able to take any neighborhoods yet, there are too many from the Free Syrian Army," Saeed said, referring to the rebels.

He estimated that about 1,000 fighters had poured into the city in the past few days to take on the Syrian army, which had been massing forces around the city ahead of its attack.

By the end of Saturday, according to the Observatory, the government appeared to have pulled back from its ground offensive and was resuming its bombardment of various neighborhoods with artillery. Attack helicopters pounded rebel positions.

There were few details about the attack in the state press, although it issued a long list of victories across the country against the "terrorists," as the rebels are referred to, a sign of widespread fighting.

The international community has expressed growing concern that there could be major bloodshed if Syrian troops retake Aleppo. But Western nations and their allies have found themselves powerless to prevent the situation from deteriorating despite a series of diplomatic efforts, including a cease-fire agreement that never took effect.

In a statement, the Arab League expressed "deep dissatisfaction for the Syrian regime's acts of oppression," particularly the use of heavy weapons against its own people. It urged Syria "to stop the cycle of killing and violence and lift the siege off the Syrian neighborhoods under attack."

The group's deputy chief, Ahmed Ben Hali added that the Arab states were preparing a resolution in front of the United Nations General Assembly calling for the creation of safe havens to protect civilians and to apply further sanctions on the regime.

Measures passed in the General Assembly are largely symbolic and not binding. The West and its Arab allies have been unable to pass effective resolutions in the more powerful Security Council. China, and especially Syria's close ally, Russia, have vetoed any attempt to sanction Bashar Assad's regime.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday called the bloodshed in Aleppo a tragedy, but asked what else could the government do against the rebellion.

"Now the city of Aleppo is occupied by the armed opposition; another tragedy is imminent there," he said. "How can it be hoped that in such a situation the government will simply give in, say 'Okay, I wasn't right, overthrow me, change the regime ? it's simply unrealistic."

Russia has been a key source of support for Syria, although Moscow officials in recent months have said they are simply taking a more even-handed approach while the West offers support to the rebels.

French President Francois Hollande even chided Russia and China on Saturday, asking them to "take into consideration ... that it will be chaos and civil war if at some moment Assad isn't stopped."

It's been a difficult two weeks for the Syrian government, with assaults on its two main cities, a bomb that killed four top security officials and a string of high-profile defections.

The country's military apparatus, though, has remained intact and continues to crush the opposition's remnants in Damascus and its outskirts.

If they really try to make a stand in Aleppo, the rebels risk being annihilated by superior firepower, and may instead withdraw to preserve their forces as they did in Damascus last week.

Italy welcomed Friday's release of two Italian electrical engineers, who had been captured eight days ago by militants.

Domenico Tedeschi and Oriano Cantani, who worked on power plants, told reporters in Damascus that they had been kidnapped by five or six masked men who intercepted their car as they drove to the airport. They were later rescued by the Syrian army.

Amid the fighting, three Syrian athletes took part in the first day of competition in London's Olympic games in swimming, shooting and boxing.

All were defeated, including Wessam Slama, a bantam weight boxer who was one of Syria's better medal hopes.

The team's leader, Maher Khayata, whose family is currently trapped by the fighting in Aleppo, said there thoughts were always on the situation at home.

"We would like to return with an Olympic medal," he told The Associated Press, "but what we want more is to return to our homeland with the news that fighting has stopped and nobody is being killed anymore."

HOW RACING REALLY STACKS UP ON DRUG TESTING

American horse racing is increasingly admonished in the mainstream media over legal and illicit drugs. The impression conveyed to the public during the recent Triple Crown season?was that the sport is permissive.

But how does horse racing really stack up against the foremost U. S. professional sports leagues on the twin elements of drug policy?testing and meting out of sanctions for transgressions?

Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association have adopted ?reasonable cause? testing policies, whereby a player can be checked at any time if someone in authority infers he may be using a forbidden drug. The National Football League?s collective bargaining agreement limits to four the number of times a player can be tested annually and permits game-day testing of performance-enhancing drugs but not recreational drugs. The National Hockey League states ?Every player will be subject to two ?no-notice? tests every year??

When benchmarked against the forgoing drug-testing practices, horse racing?s standards and procedures are very rigorous. The Association of Racing Commissioners International accurately states: ?Horse racing?s anti-doping program tests for more substances at deeper levels than any other professional sport??and the organization provides data to back up its claim. In addition, some game-day medications that are allowed in the professional sports leagues are verboten in horse racing.

While the American racing industry is a cut above other sports on drug testing, it is arguably worse when it comes to enforcing uniform and timely penalties for drug positives, especially for flagrant offenders. The punitive facet of drug policy is inhibited by multiple racing jurisdictions and often-protracted appeals processes that enable habitual offenders to continue to sully the sport?s image.

Professional sports leagues have quantified the consequences for drug-policy offences that are generally harsher than in horse racing. Measures have become more severe in recent years due to scandals over alleged and proven substance abuse by some superstars.

To illustrate, In MLB, a player?s fourth conviction for the use of a prohibited substance has a minimum two-year suspension and a third positive result for steroids carries a lifetime ban. However, such sentences typically have loopholes. For instance, the NHL allows a banned player to appeal a supposedly permanent exile once two years? time has passed.

Horse racing is held to a high standard on drugs for two entirely different and valid reasons: bettors are entitled to fairly decided outcomes and the welfare of equine athletes depends on the care provided by their handlers.

Drug-related news items that damage racing?s standing with the public and lessen its commercial appeal arise largely from the sport?s apparent leniency towards serial violators of regulations and the prolonged infighting over the race-day use of furosemide. Significant progress on these fronts would greatly diminish the notoriety that detractors seize upon to condemn the sport.

Gay men and lesbians in some sort of committed relationship reported quality of life slightly less than average, healthy heterosexual married individuals.? Gay men and lesbians who were legally married reported levels of happiness comparable to or even slightly higher than healthy, married heterosexuals.

What I thought noteworthy about this is the fact that while, on average, gay or lesbian individuals in mixed orientation marriages reported lower quality of life than gay or lesbian individuals in committed same-sex relationships or in same-sex marriages (or, for that matter, married heterosexual individuals), they were still happier than single/celibate gays and lesbians.? This is logical, when one considers the fact that needs for human touch and companionship will be fulfilled even in a less than ideal marital relationship.

This data confirms the observation that the Church's recent emphasis on celibacy as the only acceptable option for gay and lesbian individuals is unlikely to deter individuals from entering into mixed orientation marriages.? Since the Church's emphasis on singleness/celibacy for gays and lesbians effectively consigns them to the most stressful and unhappy life status, no one should wonder why, if gay individuals don't opt for a mixed orientation marriage, the vast majority eventually end up leaving the Church if a same-sex relationship is an option.

I think these data also beg the question: If singles (gay and straight) are the most unhappy of these demographic groups, how have we as a Church/society failed singles?? These are the individuals that demand our most serious and immediate attention.? What can we do to address this problem?? Are our families, Churches and social groups structured in such a way as to create or exacerbate the unhappiness measured in this survey?? And if so, what do we need to do to change that?

Finally, these data speak to the question of why legal relationship recognition in the form of full marriage equality matters.? Based on the data that was presented, it's impossible to know conclusively why legally married same-sex couples reported higher levels of happiness than same-sex couples who were only in extra-legal committed relationships.? Is it because commitment in the form of marriage offered a greater sense of security and stability in the relationship?? Is it because gay couples who are legally married are more likely to live in states where society treats them as equals?? Whatever the case, it seems to me that any commonwealth that claims to be concerned about the well being of all its citizens, needs to consider the impact that denying marriage rights will have on the health and well being of its gay citizens.

Parenthetically, it's worth considering the implications of this data about quality of life and happiness for religious beliefs about homosexuality.? Religious opponents of same-sex relationships have always argued that a lifetime of diminished happiness is a small price to pay for exaltation in eternity.? Regardless of what the data say, in other words, we still have to wrestle with larger questions about the meaning of suffering, and the relationship between holiness and happiness.

Do sports drinks really give your workout an extra edge? A recent study of the performance-enhancing claims of more than 100 fitness products says probably not. In fact, of the hundreds of such claims identified in product advertisements and websites, researchers couldn't find a single one that was backed by solid scientific evidence.

For the study, researchers at the University of Oxford looked at advertisements for sports drinks, oral supplements, footwear, clothing and fitness devices like wristbands and compression sleeves in 100 general interest magazines and the top 10 sport and fitness magazines in the U.K. and the U.S. The team also searched the websites of any product making claims to enhance athletic performance or improve recovery, seeking references for scientific studies supporting these claims.

The researchers found 235 magazine ads for sports products, of which 54 made claims to improve performance or recovery. Only three products provided references; many simply offered celebrity athlete endorsement instead. The 53 websites the researchers examined contained 431 performance-enhancing claims for 104 products, with a total of 146 references. More than half of the sites provided no references at all.

The researchers then contacted 42 companies for references that couldn't otherwise be found, and heard back from 16, nine of which offered additional material. Among the companies that didn't provide usable references, two, Panache and New Balance, said they were unwilling to share their research; one, Nike, offered a video of its product in use and said it was "sufficient"; and one, Merrell, pointed to the work of a researcher but didn't say whether the company had any research on its actual product.

After sifting through the available references, the researchers discarded half for being unfit for scientific appraisal; they pointed to books without clinical studies, nonexistent studies, conference abstracts or online surveys without data, or nonhuman studies, such as a study of the effects of different diets on rat metabolism published in 1930. Of the 74 studies that could be evaluated, the team found that only three were of high quality and low risk for bias. Notably, all three reported no significant effects of the intervention studied.

Victor Katch, a professor of kinesiology at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor who was not affiliated with the current research but studies the validity of fitness products, says the findings aren't surprising. "We are in a culture where testimonial evidence and talking heads have a lot of power and sway, especially in areas where people have little knowledge," he says. "People want to do something about their fitness and wellness and they're willing to give products a chance. Almost every week there's a new diet or fitness book out, and they're all nonsense."

The marketing of sports products has become a multibillion dollar industry, the authors note, and each year consumers increasingly buy into the claims of performance-enhancing products, especially so-called energy drinks. But the "current evidence is not of sufficient quality to inform the public about the benefits and harms of sports products," the authors write.

To be fair, there may yet be evidence, not included in the new study published in the journal BMJ Open, that backs some of the products' claims. The authors also acknowledge that while they attempted to include a representative sample of products in their study, it's possible that the ones they analyzed were "on the worst end of the spectrum." The scientists note further that they didn't give manufacturers much time to respond to their requests for more information.

But, by and large, many experts in the field agree that the evidence shoring up sports product claims is thin. "There is a need to improve the quality of the research conducted in this area and its reporting, and a move towards using systematic review evidence across the board for decision-making," the authors conclude.

Unfortunately, many manufacturers are unwilling to put in the time, money or effort required for solid research, says Katch. "[As experts in the field], we have a responsibility to offer proper information to the public. If we don't, no one will. It's very unregulated," he says.

For consumers left wondering which fitness products are worth the money and which aren't, the answer is that there isn't enough evidence to say. But for the average American, it's less important to try to boost performance than it is to just get moving, says Katch. If you want to know whether your fancy running shoes will help shave seconds from your time, you'll need to get out there and hit the pavement.

Fed edges closer to acting to spur growth

Federal Reserve officials, concerned that the U.S. economy is not producing jobs fast enough to boost the economy, are mulling taking steps to stimulate growth, according to news reports.

The Wall Street?Journal and the New York Times said Tuesday that Fed officials have hinted in speeches, in testimony to Congress and in interviews?that the central bank needs to act if the economy shows no signs of improving soon.

Recent indicators show the economy has begun to stagger amid worries about sluggish job growth, the eurozone debt crisis and a looming $600 billion "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and?spending cuts that could throw the economy into reverse in the new year if Congress doesn't?do something about?it.

The Fed's policy-setting committee?will meet next week to gauge the health of the economy ahead of?crucial employment data due out next Friday. The unemployment rate has stubbornly remained above 8 percent?while the economy has barely?created enough jobs for the past few months to stay ahead of the expansion of the work force, much less put a dent in the jobless rate.

The Fed may wait, however, until?it sees a few more weeks of data before it acts.

The steps it may take include a new round of asset purchases, or so-called QE3 (for quantitative easing). But Reuters reports that the Fed may also be considering?other steps to replenish its?dwindling toolkit.

Two principal options have emerged as eligible candidates: following the Bank of England's lead in some sort of "funding for lending" plan that favors banks that are actively making loans; lowering the rate the central bank pays financial institutions for parking their reserves at the Fed, currently at 0.25 percent.

The search for new tools is in part a response to the severe negative reaction the Fed received both at home and abroad from its second round of bond purchases.?

"Funding for lending might be a more prudent approach than just buying up securities without any strings attached," said Brian Jacobsen, chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management Group.

In response to the financial crisis and deep recession of 2007-2009, the Fed cut official borrowing costs to effectively zero and bought some $2.3 trillion in mortgage and Treasury securities in an effort to keep long-term rates down and boost economic activity.

A recent Reuters poll of U.S. primary dealers, banks that do business directly with the Fed, found that 70 percent expect another round of stimulus via bond buys. But yields on Treasuries are at or near record lows, casting doubt on what good yet more purchases can bring.?
