BFA grads in Japan, France, U.S. and, bien s?r, Montreal

Students past and present of Concordia's undergraduate Fine Arts programs are making their mark at home and around the world.

Arcade Fire ablaze with Mick Jagger
Three Concordia alumni shared the stage with Mick Jagger when the Rolling Stone hosted Saturday Night Live in New York in May. Members of the Grammy Award-winning band Arcade Fire, Sarah Neufeld, BFA 03, and Richard Reed Parry, BFA 03, both hold a music degree, specializing in electroacoustic studies, and R?gine Chassagne, BA 98, is a communications studies graduate.

A sound fine arts education

Two undergraduate students whose pioneering research work has been recognized around the world were chosen as Concordia Great Graduates of 2012. Drawn to the university for its electroacoustic studies program, Julian and Max Stein, BFA 12, created the Montreal Sound Map.

She Cannes do it
Film production graduate Chlo? Robichaud, BFA 10, was a finalist for the 2012 Short Film Palme d'or award at the Cannes Film Festival. It was her third Cannes entry in as many years.

China doc zone
Yung Chang, BFA 99, recently released his second documentary, China Heavyweight. Both this and his critically acclaimed debut documentary, Up The Yangtze (2007), were produced by EyeSteelFilm, co-founded by Cinema faculty member Daniel Cross.

Grad starts career in Japan
Armed with a new BFA in Art Education, Ida Zhang is heading to Asia this summer to begin the one-year teaching position she earned from JET, the Japan Exchange and Teaching program. Zhang, who was chosen as one of the university's Great Graduates of 2012, also won the Art Education Prize for her leadership and academic achievement.

Choreographers join the Cirque
Contemporary Dance alumni Andrew Tay, BFA 10, and Sasha Kleinplatz, BFA 04, were hired to choreograph the Cirque du Soleil's summer show Chemins invisibles in Quebec City, in which other alumni will perform.

Designs get global attention
Once again, undergraduate students from the Department of Design and Computation Arts got to show off their newfound chops at the Montreal International Design Show. Known as SIDIM, the high-profile show attracts some 20,000 design industry folks, consumers and journalists from around the world.

Hitting a high note
The 2012 valedictorian for the Faculty of Fine Arts comes from the Department of Art History. Successful singer/musician -- and 2012 Great Graduate -- Felicity Hamer relishes art history, saying it's like detective work, and is going to pursue an MFA in the field.

Fringe feeders

Concordia has been well-represented at this year's St-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival, a celebration of independent theatre, dance and music. The festival director is Amy Blackmore, a Contemporary Dance alumna, and many other Concordians will be involved.

Oh, Canada shouts Oh, Concordia
Nearly a quarter of the artists and curators featured in an exhibition at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) are Studio Arts and Art History alumni and faculty. MASS MoCA's Oh, Canada will showcase works by artists from across the country until April 1, 2013.

(AP) ? Chimpanzees at a sanctuary for the animals in eastern South Africa pulled an American working there into their enclosure, bit him severely and dragged him nearly a half mile (kilometer), according to a paramedic official and local media reports.

The man was leading a tour group at the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden near Nelspruit, some 180 miles (300 kilometers) from Johannesburg, Thursday when two chimpanzees grabbed his feet and pulled him under a fence into their enclosure, Jeffrey Wicks of the Netcare911 medical emergency services company said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press on Friday.

Mediclinic Nelspruit, the hospital where he was taken, said Friday he was in intensive care in critical condition after undergoing surgery Thursday.

The man had "multiple and severe bite wounds" and was dragged nearly a kilometer by the chimpanzees, Wicks said.

Beeld, a South African newspaper, reported Friday that the man was an American researcher who was giving tourists a lecture at the time of the attack. The tourists were escorted to safety by staff members as the chimpanzees dragged the man out of their enclosure, Beeld reported. The sanctuary's director fired into the air to scare the chimps away from the man, and then chased the animals back into their enclosure. Beeld reported the man lost part of an ear and parts of his fingers.

The Associated Press did not immediately get responses to phone calls and an email seeking comment from officials at the institute and its sanctuary.

The international institute founded by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall opened the sanctuary in 2006. It is a home to chimpanzees, which are not native to South Africa, rescued from further north in Africa. Some of the chimpanzees at the sanctuary lost their parents to poachers in countries where they are hunted for their meat, and others were held in captivity in cruel conditions as little more than roadside attractions.

In the United States this week, lawyers for a Connecticut woman who was attacked in 2009 by a friend's chimpanzee filed papers accusing state officials of failing to seize the animal before the mauling despite a staff member's warning that it was dangerous. The chimpanzee ripped off the woman's nose, lips, eyelids and hands before being killed by police, and the woman was blinded and has had a face transplant.

Jelly Bean, Android 4.1 revealed by Google, rolling out in mid-July

It's seems like only yesterday we were all crowded around our laptops, watching a live stream and getting amped for Ice Cream Sandwich. Truth is, that was six months ago now and, while most of the Android running public still hasn't been blessed with 4.0, it's already time to make the leap to 4.1. Today Google officially took the wraps off Jelly Bean, the next evolution of its mobile platform and while it's not quite the revolutionary shift that was Gingerbread to ICS, it still marks an important improvement for the ecosystem. One of the biggest features is Project Butter, a deep-diving effort to improve performance and response time. The whole system hums along at 60fps now, and while the difference of a few milliseconds might sound like small potatoes, it becomes glaringly apparent the moment you run Jelly Bean next to an ICS device. Animations are smoother and quicker. The CPU immediately ramps up the moment a touch is detected to ensure speedy response.

The home screen has also been tweaked, adding some nice features like dynamically resizing widgets, so you no longer have to place it, resize it then move it to where you want if there isn't enough room. If there is room, but your app icons are merely in the way, the widget will automatically push them to the side. And, in a nice, slick touch, apps and widgets can be removed by flicking them off the screen. Another extremely welcome touch is the addition of offline voice input. Now you can tap the microphone and dictate a message even with the phone in airplane mode.

The camera app, which was already a highlight of ICS, has gotten even better in 4.1. Now, the gallery is slickly integrated, allowing you to quickly pull up the photo you just took with a swipe to the left. You can keep swiping through your images or even pinch to zoom out and view all your images in a filmstrip view. Deleting images is as simple as swiping a pic off the screen and, if you've manage to accidentally remove one, a quick tap of the undo button restores it. And, speaking of images, you can now share them and video using Google Beam, and Android now supports pairing with Bluetooth devices with the assistance of NFC.

5 Common Mistakes When You Rent Out Your Property | Zillow Blog

Investing in a rental property is a great way to generate income, but it?s not always easy. Renting out your property also involves managing it ? and mistakes along the way can end up costing you more money. Although there?s no guaranteed way to weed out bad tenants in your screening process, you can definitely safeguard against future headaches by avoiding these common mistakes owners make when they rent out their homes.

Not having correct documentation

Even if your state allows for an oral lease agreement, having a signed lease is just the smart thing to do. Make sure your lease agreements cover all your bases. Often, standard forms you find online won?t be specific to your property. Topics such as property management, late payment fees, or pet policies can and should be covered in a separate, signed document you draw up yourself. Providing a document with specific stipulations will help you deal with troublesome tenants in cases where they break the lease.

Discriminating against prospective tenants

Protect yourself from legal trouble by being familiar with fair housing laws. Make sure your listings aren?t targeting or excluding specific groups. When you meet with a tenant for a showing, asking questions? about disability, marriage, or familial status could also suggest discriminatory intent. If you turn down a renter?s application, use a credit or background check to support your decision.

Neglecting to buy correct insurance

Renting out your property exposes you to a higher risk for accidents, and homeowners insurance may not offer complete coverage if your home is being rented out full time. Protect yourself from damages, accidents, and financial losses on your rental property by purchasing landlord insurance coverage. You can also require renters to buy renters insurance to protect their own belongings, since landlords insurance does not cover the renter?s possessions.

Failing to disclose important information

If you?re aware of mold, lead, or asbestos on your property and don?t notify your tenants, you could be breaking your state?s laws. Be aware of the disclosures you?re required to give renters and make sure you comply with them.

Being lax about screening

It?s smart to be picky about who you allow to live in your property. Finding a tenant who pays the rent on time and will be a responsible renter will make your job a lot easier. Requiring a credit check and completing a thorough background check before you approve a renter will help you single out good renters.

Baby Shower Etiquette for 4th Child | Being Pregnant

ID 10086571 300x199 What If I Want a Baby Shower for My 4th Baby? Big No no or Who Cares?I have had a lot of time to think about when I do get stay pregnant of all the fun things that come along with pregnancy. I am looking forward to so much, including soothing this aching feeling that someone is missing. I want so much to complete our family and well, the whole pregnancy experience is?relatively?fun too (you know, needles, kidney stones and constant puking aside). A full year of baby fever behind me and the hopes of a baby in our relatively close future, I am putting some thought into the fun things ? like a baby shower!

I had one with my first child back in 2005 with my close friends and family. It was lovely and we were spoiled, which is always helpful when you?re about to have your first child. I have had two other children since and never really needed to purchase much for the baby other than a few items of clothing since I had 2 girls after.

With this next baby being my last, I kind of want to re-experience everything, soak it all in. Included in that wish-list of things is a baby shower ? to celebrate the coming baby not so much for the stuff. All the baby shower etiquette tells me that I shouldn?t have a shower for another child and I have a feeling it would feel especially tacky to some people if I had one for my 4th kid.

But, is it really that bad?

Are baby showers really more for the stuff & gifts or a reason to celebrate the upcoming family member? To share in the joy of the parents to be, give advice and make memories that the family will keep with them forever. There are some reasons I would totally love to have another baby shower, even though I had one over 6 years ago.

I Have No Boy Clothes Left

My son is going to be 7 likely by the time we have a new baby -- or close to it. I have no clothes left from when he was a babe!

People celebrate with bridal showers before each wedding ? even if it?s not their first. I get a birthday every year, even though it?s clearly not my first (::cough cough, being 30 now!::) & I really love the idea of each child getting kind of a birthday party before they?re born. Is it?appropriate?though? Should I care? Is this an instance where I would be expected to hold more of a meet the baby party after they are born versus a baby shower? It?s not like I am planning a ?I?m pregnant? party followed by a ?gender reveal? party and then ?a baby shower ? shouldn?t I at least get one event to celebrate the pregnancy?

Share your thoughts with me in the comments ? is it appropriate? tacky? who cares?

Cano's HR helps beat-up Yankees win

By RICK FREEMAN

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:52 p.m. ET June 27, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - The Yankees lost their ace for at least a couple of weeks and their most dependable veteran for about a couple of months. For a team that's already lost two key pitchers to injuries for the season, the news could have been worse.

It was bad enough even before Andy Pettitte fractured his fibula near his left ankle on the same day the Yankees put CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list with a strained groin. Robinson Cano hit a go-ahead homer to help New York beat the Cleveland Indians 5-4 Wednesday for a three-game sweep.

"No one's going to feel sorry for us," manager Joe Girardi said.

The Yankees have won 25 of their last 32 games and reached a season-high 18 games over .500. But now have to face at least two starts without Sabathia and possibly close to two months without Pettitte, the veteran who came out of retirement and filled in admirably for a pitching staff hit by injuries, including the loss of starter Michael Pineda and closer Mariano Rivera.

"If we have to score some runs, we'll score some runs," Girardi said.

Pettitte suffered his injury in the fifth inning when he was hit in the leg on a line drive by Casey Kotchman. Before the game, the Yankees announced Sabathia strained his groin against the Mets on Sunday, and still felt discomfort after throwing in the bullpen Tuesday.

"I wanted to go out and pitch Friday, but it's early in the season and I want to be healthy," Sabathia said. "If Friday I got out there in the bullpen and couldn't go, that would put us in a really tough spot."

Rafael Soriano had an adventuresome ninth inning in which he put the first two batters on base and walked in a run with two outs before getting Asdrubal Cabrera to fly out to left for his 17th save.

Pettitte was hit near his left ankle as he brought it around from the rubber while completing his delivery. The ball bounced toward the third base line and the left-hander went to field it, but it looked as if he couldn't put weight on it and he went down on the grass.

He got back on the mound and threw several warm-up pitches before manager Joe Girardi let him stay in. But when he came up limping after throwing his first live pitch, Girardi popped out of the dugout and signaled for a pitching change.

Right-hander Cody Eppley came on with Kotchman on first and no one out. Lou Marson singled and Aaron Cunningham bunted the runners over before Kotchman was thrown out at the plate on Michael Brantley's grounder to first base against Clay Rapada.

Cabrera hit a tying RBI single and Jason Kipnis followed with a blooper that fell in just beyond the glove of shortstop Jayson Nix to put the Indians ahead 3-2.

"We battled hard up until the end but we still fell short," Cleveland manager Manny Acta said. "We player better, better baseball today. I really liked the at-bats, especially at the end."

Ubaldo Jimenez (7-6) gave the lead back in the sixth when he allowed a leadoff double by Alex Rodriguez before Cano's drive.

Jimenez allowed four hits, four walks and four runs in six innings while striking out seven. Eric Chavez had three hits, including a two-run double off Jimenez in the fourth.

Pettitte was working on another good start when he was hurt. He struck out 7 in four innings, and was charged with two runs, only one earned. He has struck out about a batter per inning since returning May 13.

Shelley Duncan hit an RBI double in the second for Cleveland, which has lost a season-high five straight.

"I think today was a good sign," Jimenez said. "We were able to hang in there, the guys were able to score a couple runs. We lost the game, we lost the series but we still have a long way to go."

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Sabathia felt a twinge in the muscle on the inside of his left leg in the fourth inning against the Mets. He didn't tell anyone about it until he could still feel discomfort after throwing in the bullpen on Tuesday.

Girardi said the Yankees expect to have Sabathia, who is 9-3 with a 3.45 ERA, back shortly after the All-Star break. Longtime starter Freddy Garcia was expected to return to the Yankees rotation in place of the Cy Young winner, but he had to pitch in the fifth inning, after Eppley and Rapada got the first two outs.

Garcia (2-2) struck out cleanup hitter Jose Lopez to end the fifth, then worked the sixth and seventh. He will be pushed back to make the next start in place of Pettitte, and minor-league right-hander Adam Warren is expected to be called up to make Friday's start.

NOTES: The Indians claimed former Mets utility player Vinny Rottino off waivers from New York, which designated him for assignment on Monday. He hit .182 with a double, two homers and 5 RBIs in 18 games with the Mets. Cleveland made room for him on the 40-man roster by designating RHP Chris Schwinden for assignment. Schwinden had appeared for the Mets earlier this season, but had been claimed previously by the Blue Jays before the Indians. ... New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin will throw out the first pitch on Saturday against the White Sox. ... Indians C Carlos Santana, who was the DH on Wednesday, was pinch-hit for in the ninth because his back tightened up.

Acclaimed screenwriter Nora Ephron dead at 71

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nora Ephron, known for romantic comedies "When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle," as well as books and essays, has died in New York after battling leukemia. She was 71.

Ephron, who had suffered from acute myeloid leukemia, died on Tuesday evening at New York's Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center surrounded by her family, they said in a statement.

Reactions poured in from around the arts and entertainment community for the screenwriter who delighted millions with her flair for comedy, romance and the ability to tackle serious subjects with insight.

"She brought an awful lot of people a tremendous amount of joy. She will be sorely missed," her publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, said in a statement.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg called her death "a devastating one" for the city's arts and cultural community, and the Los Angeles-based Directors Guild of America called her "an inspiration for women filmmakers when there were few."

Writer and actress Carrie Fisher called Ephron "inspiring, intimidating, and insightful" and actor Martin Landau said she was "able to accomplish everything she set her mind to with great style."

Ephron, who often parlayed her own love life into movies like "Heartburn" and gave her acerbic take on aging in the 2010 essay collection, "I Remember Nothing: And Other Reflections," had kept her illness largely private except for close friends and family.

"At some point, your luck is going to run out ... You are very aware with friends getting sick that it can end in a second," Ephron told Reuters in a 2010 interview while promoting the book.

The elegant Ephron, known for habitually dressing in black, urged aging friends and readers to make the most of their lives.

"You should eat delicious things while you can still eat them, go to wonderful places while you still can ... and not have evenings where you say to yourself, 'What am I doing here? Why am I here? I am bored witless!'" she told Reuters.

She began her career as a journalist but transitioned into movies, leaving behind a legacy of more than a dozen films, often featuring strong female characters, that she either wrote, produced or directed. She was nominated for three Academy Awards for "Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle" and the drama "Silkwood" in which Meryl Streep played an anti-nuclear activist.

Other romantic comedies included "You've Got Mail," starring Meg Ryan, and her last film "Julie & Julia" in 2009, which had Streep portraying the fearless celebrity cook Julia Child.

Ephron also wrote for the stage, authoring the 2002 play "Imaginary Friends" about the rivalry of authors Mary McCarthy and Lillian Hellman, and "Love, Loss and What I Wore," with her sister Delia, in 2009.

NEW YORK, WASHINGTON, HOLLYWOOD

Born May 19, 1941 in New York City and raised in Beverly Hills by screenwriter parents, Ephron worked briefly as a White House intern before going into journalism. She quickly became known as a humorist with essays on subjects ranging from food and fashion to feminism.

She started in the entertainment industry while married to her second husband, The Washington Post's famed Watergate investigative reporter Carl Bernstein.

She helped rewrite a version of the script for the movie "All The President's Men," about Bernstein and Bob Woodward's uncovering of the political scandal that led to the resignation of Richard Nixon in 1974. Although that screenplay was not used, it led to a TV movie screenwriting job for Ephron.

Her big movie break came after a messy divorce from Bernstein, which was the genesis for her 1983 novel "Heartburn" that she later adapted into the bittersweet hit film of the same name starring Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep.

That film ushered in a string of box office successes in the late 1980s and 1990s, including "When Harry Met Sally," "Michael" with John Travolta, "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail," that saw Ephron gradually add producer and director to her resume and become one of Hollywood's most successful makers of romantic comedies.

Although her movies raked in tens of millions of dollars at box offices worldwide, Ephron never won the industry's highest honor, an Academy Award.

Personal Loans for meeting Personal requirements

For satisfying the intense desire; the person has to arrange funds, due to non availability of funds. In this situation, the personal loan plays a vital role, as it provides instant funds to meet the person desire. The best feature of the personal loan is that it is an unsecured loan, i.e. the person does not have to provide any collateral for availing the loan.

The person should look around for a personal loan before applying for the personal loan, so as to avail best personal loan deal. The person can get cost effective personal loan as many banks; financial institutions and NBFCs provide this loan. The person can look around for various lenders through internet. The person should choose that lender that provides minimum interest rate with higher loan amount and that too with the maximum loan tenure.

The eligibility of the loan amount depends upon the person?s net salary or take home salary.

The banks or financial institution consider only 40-50% of the net salary while calculating the loan amount. The person can pay the amount back through EMI. Since, it is an unsecured loan; therefore, the interest rate is high, as the risk of lending is high. Usually, bank charges from 14% to 25% interest rate. The banks provide this loan on the customer?s profile, i.e. upon customer creditability, income and repayment ability.

The person can avail the loan amount from Rs.30000 up to Rs.15-20lacs for any purpose, but loan amount entirely depends upon the person profile.

The borrower can repay the loan amount in 12-60monthsdepending upon the loan agreement.

The interest rate levy on the loan is not only the cost of availing the loan amount. The total cost of the loan comprises of interest rate, processing fee, additional charges (annual maintaining charges and account keeping fees) and penalties. The bank charges these charges either in the form of flat rate or the percentage of the loan amount. It significantly increases the entire cost of the personal loan.

The demand of personal loan has risen significantly, as the earning power of the consumer has risen, due to the increase in the income. The person can avail this loan for various purposes such as for travelling expenses, for initiating new business, for marriage of their sister or daughter, for children higher education, for purchasing a car, for purchasing of consumer durable goods, for paying off debts, etc.

Steps in Preventing Computer Virus Attacks

Before you read on, note that this article is meant to help computer users like you learn more about viral infections; it also presents advice on how you keep your PC or laptop secure from intrusions and attacks. What you will read here is derived from multiple sources and is only meant to instruct you on the subject matter at hand; it strives to be impartial and it does not endorse any antivirus product or software.

Every time you hear or see the phrase ?computer virus,? you come up with images of actual infections or you would recall the frustration that you feel each time your PC or laptop has been infected. You must be concerned given the myriad number and types of malicious software or malware that you can possibly encounter such as worms, spyware, Trojans, viruses, adware, and keystroke loggers. Such malware are capable of entering and disrupting the computer?s system and make off with important user information such as account passwords, financial and financial data, and email messages. They can also enable unwanted intruders to do things such as denying you access to your infected PC or laptop, which they can undo only if you pay them a fee. And like their real-world cousins, computer viruses can copy themselves and in the process consume much of your computer?s available memory, causing it to bog down or even crash.

There are many viruses that lurk the Internet right now and more that are being created that even the best antivirus solutions are unable to keep track of them. But it always pays to have a good antiviral program set up in your computer, or sign in to one of those websites that offer active virus scanning and elimination services every time you surf the Web. However, doing either one or both of these precautions may not be enough, it is better if you use your computer in a manner that keeps it safe from viruses and other malware. We might carelessly just click open spurious web browser alerts, pop-ups, or emailed attachments that come from unknown persons without thinking of the consequences that come with our action. Some users may reason that since they already have a capable antiviral solution set up in their PCs or laptops, they can do whatever they like and then have the antivirus program deal with whatever issue that comes up. This is wrong; it is always good to have a cautious mindset each time you use your computer. In preventing future viral infections, do take note of the following steps.

? First, get yourself a legitimate and trusted antiviral program by purchasing one or downloading it from a reputable website. Go for established brands like Norton, Avast, Kaspersky, McAfee, Avira, Microsoft, ZoneAlarm, and Panda or try out other lesser-known but equally capable products.

? Next, run the program or have it saved first into a readily serviceable part of your computer system like the desktop or documents file and then run the file from there. Take note of the installation wizard as it guides you through the process. If the wizard asks you to do so, restart your PC or laptop to configure it to the new settings. You can then set up your computer to have it perform thorough or customized scans in its system at regular intervals to identify potential malware infections. You can?t go wrong with either option, but is preferable if you set your PC or laptop to do regular thorough scans. It is also preferable if you let your antiviral program update itself on a routine basis to help it keep up with current virus and malware infections. In the same vein, have your Windows or Macintosh computer updated with the latest versions and patches and have it set up so that it can get the newest updates from the Internet every time they are made available. It is also advisable if you get yourself other antiviral products that will supplement your own program and help strengthen your computer?s defense against more harmful attacks; programs such as Windows Bit Defender and Zone Alarm can help identify and eliminate elusive viruses and malware. Also, ignore any kind of false alert that suddenly pops up in your desktop or web browser declaring that your computer is in danger of potential virus infections. Always take them down and then just run a complete system check to identify the virus that is causing this problem. Disregard any email message and attachment that was sent to you by unknown persons because they have viruses and other malware embedded in them; opening them will install the malware directly into your computer system. These malware are capable of making off with your sensitive personal and financial data, information which can then be used by shady hackers for their own benefit.

? Another thing to remember is that every time you log in to the Web, duly ignore any dubious pop-up window or notification that urges you to look into ads, try out special offers, and the like. As always, these questionable pop-ups have viruses programmed in them that when activated will redirect you to the advertiser?s or creator?s website, or lead you to illegitimate and pornographic sites.

? One last thing to remember is to never patronize and use pirated storage media to save information that you got from the Web, be they videos, programs, audio recordings and others. Avoid infected media such as CDs, DVDs, CD-ROMs, and USB sticks and never use them on your PC or laptop as they may have viruses and malware stored within them.

FDA probes safety issues with metal hip implants

(AP) ? Metal hip replacements implanted in a half-million Americans may be failing earlier than expected, but it could be years before U.S. health regulators have a clear picture of the problem.

The Food and Drug Administration holds a two-day meeting starting Wednesday to scrutinize the safety of metal-on-metal hip implants, following years of patient reports of pain and swelling that sometimes requires removal of the devices. It is a challenging, but familiar, predicament for the FDA: reviewing the safety of a device that was expected to be superior, but which may actually be more dangerous than what came before.

For decades nearly all orthopedic implants were made from plastic or ceramic. But in the last 10 years some surgeons began to favor implants made with metal stems and sockets. Laboratory tests suggested the devices would be more resistant to wear and reduce the chances of dislocation.

But recent data gathered by surgeons in the U.K. appears to show just the opposite.

In March, British experts at the world's largest artificial joint registry told doctors to stop using metal-on-metal hip replacements, citing an analysis showing they have to be replaced more often than other implants. Hip replacements are supposed to last between 10 to 15 years, but more than 6 percent of patients with metal hips needed them replaced after less than five years. That compared with just 2 percent of people who had ceramic or plastic joints. Both types of devices are prescribed for people suffering hip pain and limited movement due to arthritis or injury.

British regulators now recommend that people who have the implants get yearly blood tests to make sure no dangerous metals are seeping into their bodies as the components rub against each other.

The FDA has not made any recommendations of its own for the estimated 500,000 American patients with the devices.

FDA scientists say they want to consider all available information before making their recommendations ? not just the data from the U.K.

"Why look at a single registry when there's data from around the world?" said Dr. William Maisel, FDA's chief scientist for medical devices, in an interview with the Associated Press. "This is an opportunity for us to look at all the available information so that we can have a thoughtful conversation about what clinical recommendations can be made."

Maisel said the FDA is working to combine data from foreign countries and the U.S. to determine which groups of patients and implants are most problematic. On Wednesday and Thursday the FDA will ask a panel of experts to recommend the best practices for monitoring patients with the devices. Panelists will consider blood tests, medical imaging and laboratory tests.

But some U.S. orthopedic specialists say they have already reached their own conclusions about metal hips.

"In my personal opinion there is very little room, if any, for metal-on-metal implants because the alternatives we have on the market are likely safer and as effective," said Dr. Art Sedrakyan, professor of public health at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.

The FDA's deliberative approach to tackling the hip implant issue is in some ways a necessity. Unlike other countries, the U.S. has no national registry to track the performance of implants over time.

The FDA received 16,800 negative event reports involving metal hips between 2000 and 2011, but regulators stress that number is not very useful. Many doctors do not report problems to the FDA, and the volume of reports is influenced by news reports on safety issues.

A registry set up by Minnesota's HealthEast Care System recorded four times as many replacement surgeries for patients with metal-on-metal hips as those with other implant types. However, a similar registry set up by health care provider Kaiser Permanente found no difference between the two groups.

With little definitive data on U.S. hip implants, the agency has asked manufacturers like Johnson & Johnson, Zimmer Holdings Inc. and Biomet Inc. to conduct long-term, follow-up studies of more than 100 metal-on-metal hips on the U.S. market.

FDA scientists say the studies will help "fill in the blanks" on a number of scientific questions, including the effects of metal particles that often seep into the bloodstream as the implants wear down.

But Sedrakyan and others say it could be a decade or more before that information is available. In a commentary published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine, Sedrakyan and two co-authors pointed out those studies must run at least eight years to return the information FDA is seeking. Based on the authors' analysis of FDA records, the FDA has reached agreements on the design of less than 25 percent of the studies, and it's unclear whether any of the studies have actually begun. The FDA notified the companies last May.

The prospect of safety findings arriving in eight or 10 years is little comfort to patients like Mary Weaver, 48, who had both hips replaced with a metal implant from Johnson & Johnson in 2007 and 2008. J&J recalled the ASR hip replacement in 2010, after reports that it was failing in some patients after only a few years of implantation.

Due to increasing pain and elevated metal levels in her blood, Weaver had both implants removed in 2011. She was let go from her job due to the time needed to undergo both surgeries, and is currently unemployed.

"I hope that no one has to go through this ? it's frustrating, it's emotionally draining," said Weaver, who lives in Mount Jackson, Va. "It's not just hard on you, it's hard on your whole family because your quality of life is not what it used to be."

Like 90 percent of medical devices sold in the U.S., most metal-on-metal hips were approved via the FDA's fast track program for medical devices. Under the so-called 510k system, the agency waives clinical testing requirements for devices which appear similar to others already in use. Since plastic and ceramic hip replacements had been on the market since the 1950s, most metal hip replacements were approved without new clinical testing.

"I am so furious they would use my wife as a lab rat, along with the other 500,000 people who don't have a clue what is happening," said Dwight Schrag, 69, of Bellevue, Wash. Schrag's wife Mary received J&J's ASR hip in 2006 and had it removed due to pain and other side effects in 2010. Schrag is one of a number of speakers who have signed up to speak during a public comment session at the FDA meeting.

It's not the first time the FDA's fast-track program for clearing devices has come under fire.

Last summer the Institute of Medicine said in a report that the FDA should abandon the 35-year-old system because it provides little assurance that the implants are actually safe. The Institute is composed of medical experts who advise the federal government.

Although the FDA itself requested the report from the Institute, agency officials rejected the group's conclusions, saying the 510k system works well for the vast majority of devices.

(AP) ? Archaeologists in Greece's second-largest city have uncovered a 70-meter (230-foot) section of an ancient road built by the Romans that was city's main travel artery nearly 2,000 years ago.

The marble-paved road was unearthed during excavations for Thessaloniki's new subway system, which is due to be completed in four years. The road in the northern port city will be raised to be put on permanent display when the metro opens in 2016.

The excavation site was shown to the public on Monday, when details of the permanent display project were also announced. Several of the large marble paving stones were etched with children's board games, while others were marked by horse-drawn cart wheels.

Also discovered at the site were remains of tools and lamps, as well as the bases of marble columns.

Viki Tzanakouli, an archaeologist working on the project, told The Associated Press the Roman road was about 1,800 years old, while remains of an older road built by the ancient Greeks 500 years earlier were found underneath it.

"We have found roads on top of each other, revealing the city's history over the centuries," Tzanakouli said. "The ancient road, and side roads perpendicular to it appear to closely follow modern roads in the city today."

About 7 meters (23 feet) below ground in the center of the city, the ancient road follows in roughly the same direction as the city's modern Egnatia Avenue.

The subway works, started in 2006, present a rare opportunity for archaeologists to explore under the densely populated city ? but have also caused years of delays for the project.

In 2008, workers on the Thessaloniki metro discovered more than 1,000 graves, some filled with treasure. The graves were of different shapes and sizes, and some contained jewelry, coins or other pieces of art.

A massive excavation project also took place during the 1990s in the capital, Athens, before the city's new metro system opened in 2000.

Thessaloniki's new subway is already four years behind schedule, due to the excavation work as well as Greece's financial crisis. Thirteen stations will operate initially, before a 10-station extension is added later.

Protests continue in Cairo amid threats of crackdown by military junta

Home ? World News

By Barry Grey
23 June 2012

As tens of thousands rallied Friday in Cairo?s Tahrir Square against the assumption by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) of dictatorial powers, the standoff between SCAF and the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) over the disputed presidential election grew more tense, and the junta threatened to unleash repression against the protesters.

Friday saw the biggest of the daily demonstrations called by the Islamist Brotherhood since Tuesday to protest a series of moves by SCAF dissolving the MB-dominated parliament and constituent assembly and effectively placing all legislative and executive power in the hands of the generals.

Tensions have increased since the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission, appointed under the deposed dictator Hosni Mubarak, delayed its announcement of the winner of last weekend?s presidential runoff from Thursday to this weekend. The commission claimed it was putting off the announcement to consider charges of election fraud.

Both the MB candidate, Mohamed Mursi, and his runoff opponent, Ahmed Shafiq, a former air force commander and Mubarak?s last prime minister, have claimed victory. It is widely suspected that SCAF ordered the delay in order to prepare the army and police for an anticipated eruption of popular protest over an announcement handing the presidency to the generals? candidate, Shafiq.

The state-owned Al Ahram newspaper on Friday cited unnamed government figures and Western diplomats as saying the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission was set to announce the victory of Shafiq on Sunday evening. The article reported a source as saying the SCAF-backed candidate would be credited with having received 50.7 percent of the vote.

Sources at the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission, the newspaper reported, would not confirm the reports of its intention to declare Shafiq the winner.

Earlier in the week a group of judges monitoring the elections, the Judges of Egypt, issued a statement unofficially declaring Mursi the winner. The judges said Mursi had won the election with about 900,000 more votes than Ahmed Shafiq.

According to ahramonline, intense negotiations between the Brotherhood leadership and the military command continued into the night Thursday toward a ?a political deal? that would allow Mursi to assume the presidency, while keeping real power in the hands of the generals. The SCAF is demanding that the Brotherhood pull its supporters out of Tahrir Square and accept the military?s constitutional decree arrogating to itself dictatorial powers.

The report quoted a Brotherhood source as saying that a deal could be reached by Saturday or Sunday to allow Mursi to assume the presidency. ?But if no deal is reached, and if the SCAF insists on taking everything and giving nothing, then we would not be surprised if they announce Shafiq as president,? the source said.

The US is giving its tacit support to the junta, neither denouncing its power grab nor demanding that it rescind its dictatorial measures. Washington continues to maintain the absurd pretense that the junta is presiding over a transition to democracy. In line with this fa?ade, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a television interview urged SCAF to hand over power to the ?legitimate winner.?

The conflict between SCAF and the Muslim Brotherhood is a power struggle within the Egyptian bourgeoisie. The MB is itself a right-wing party hostile to the working class and committed to defending both capitalism and the existing imperialist set-up in the Middle East. It reflects the interests of sections of the corporate-financial elite and privileged middle class layers that have been excluded during the decades of military rule from political power and what they consider their rightful share of the economic spoils from the exploitation of the workers.

The Brotherhood collaborated with SCAF in suppressing the revolutionary upsurge centered in the working class that brought down Mubarak in February of 2011, but came increasingly into conflict with the generals after winning a majority in the parliamentary elections.

It wants to secure a share of state power by winning the post of president, reduced by SCAF?s decrees to a mere figure-head, and is eager to work out a deal with the junta. At the same time, it, along with the military, fears a new eruption of mass protests and strikes by the working class and is seeking to head off a revolutionary movement to overthrow the capitalist state and establish socialism.

The MB also fears that the installation of Shafiq, following the military coup carried out last week, will discredit it by exposing its role in promoting the fiction of a ?transition to democracy? under the junta.

Friday afternoon, SCAF flatly rejected calls by the MB, other Islamists, liberals and pseudo-left groups such as the Revolutionary Socialists that have now lined up completely behind the Brotherhood that it rescind its measures dissolving the institutions put in place to provide the illusion of a democratic transition.

In a four-minute statement read on state television, SCAF warned that the army and police would be mobilized in response to any attacks on Egypt?s ?public or private institutions.? Defending its issuance of an amendment to the constitutional declaration of 2011 giving itself immunity and complete control over the country?s security forces, granting the army the right to arrest civilians, and assuming control over legislative and budgetary issues, SCAF declared: ?The issuance of the supplementary constitutional decree was necessitated by the needs of administering the affairs of the state during this critical period in the history of our nation.?

It said ominously that it would allow peaceful protests so long as they did not conflict with the ?interests of the country.?

The statement denounced MB presidential candidate Mursi for declaring victory prior to an announcement by the election commission and blamed him for growing political unrest.

Mursi responded by reiterating his demand that the junta reverse its dissolution of the parliament and constituent assembly and its assumption of dictatorial powers. However, he refrained from repeating his previous claims to have won the election, and made clear the Muslim Brotherhood?s desire to collaborate with SCAF, calling its members ?honest men working for the betterment of Egypt.? He added, ?They are working to safeguard our land.?

The Egyptian army is the backbone of the Egyptian capitalist state and the main bulwark against working class revolution. Should the Muslim Brotherhood?or, for that matter, its pseudo-left supporters such as the Revolutionary Socialists?manage to carve out a share of state power, they would deploy the military and police to put down a challenge to capitalist rule by the working class.
