According to Ace Matrix, Americans think that the February spot introducing the Galaxy Note is the best phone ad of the year.<br /><p>But there's some consolation for Apple fans.</p> <p>Although Samsung's recent ad that bashed the iPhone 5 prior to its release might be one of the tech world's fastest growing viral video, data shows that people liked Apple's real ads for the new smartphone ? which premiered days later ? more.</p> <p>Ace Metrix measures how viewers perceive national TV ads (based on criteria including relevance and watchability). Based on scores ranging from one to 950, two iPhone 5 commercials trumped the Samsung ad that mocked the device.</p> <p>This comes a few days after news that Samsung's tablet ads are crushing iPad spots.</p> <p>In a press release, Ace Metrix CEO Peter Daboll explained that, "While they [Apple is] still neck and neck with Samsung from an ad effectiveness perspective in the mobile phone category, Apple?s performance in promoting the iPhone 5 was an improvement vs. many of the recent celebrity efforts for Siri. However, the iPhone 'launch' ads almost always perform well ? part of the 'i-phoria' that accompanies these new product introductions."</p> <p><strong>The table below ranks the highest scoring mobile device ads so far in 2012.</strong> The new Samsung and Apple spots are in bold. While the new iPhone 5 spots (and an old one featuring Zooey Deschanel) beat the Samsung spoof, the commercial introducing the Samsung Galaxy Note has the overall number one spot with a score of 686.</p> <p><strong></strong>Apple should be thanking the ladies for this boost. According to the press release, "While the new iPhone ads appealed across demographic breaks, they performed particularly well with younger women, especially wealthier females. It happened to one of our devices following issues with web browsing over cellular data. A quick call to customer services, some settings updates to change over to EE, and we're back online. She targets women looking for clothing with classic design elements that are trendy at the same time. ?Her clients range in age from 25-75.?</p><p>Schneider has expert advice on marketing to this customer base. ?Her business partner - and husband - Zack Schneider, is also co-owner of 15 Fingers LLC, a marketing agency that specializes in catalyzing audience engagement with online and traditional marketing tools.</p><p>And as if all of this wasn't already exhausting, the couple had their first child, August Peter seven months ago. ?Fortunately, they have a large extended family that is only too happy to assist with child care. ?And Augie regularly accompanies his mother to the store, much to the delight of shoppers. ?</p><p>Schneider and her husband were eager to start a retail business on Hertel but first patiently conducted research. ?Initially they considered opening a lingerie boutique. ?But when the economy failed to rebound as predicted and consumers pulled back on purchasing luxury items, they decided instead to pursue their current product line.?</p><p>Retail can be very challenging under any circumstance because of the cost of inventory. ?Schneider's strategy has served her well since launching her business. ?She views much of her clothing and accessories as "transitional" in that they can be sold and worn during more than one season. ?In addition, she keeps her order quantities low, buying only one or two garments in each size. ?This has an added benefit, according to Schneider, because her clients know they are buying something unique. ?"We pride ourselves on giving our customers an edge on fashion. ?They won't see themselves coming and going when they shop at Chic and Sweet."</p><p>Schneider is not new to entrepreneurship and the demanding schedule needed to make a retail venture successful. ? She has always been "obsessed" with fashion design and, after high school, created her own line of jewelry which she sold at home parties. ?She also worked in retail while going to school and gained Specialist in the Lancaster School District. ?Her hectic schedule still allows her to closely manage Chic and Sweet and their four part-time employees. ?Her business is clearly a passion and its success is a priority.</p><p>Schneider is very excited by the recent commercial growth on Hertel. ?The opening of Spot Coffee and Globe Market represents significant investment and has increased foot traffic. ?New restaurants such as Mes Que and The Village Beer Merchant are also indications of other entrepreneurs' confidence in the future of Hertel Avenue. ?</p><p>While there are key geographic and demographic differences, Hertel is often compared to the Elmwood Avenue strip. ?Hertel may be approaching a critical mass of shopping venues and restaurants, but Schneider feels that a united marketing effort, similar to that of the Elmwood Village Association, is needed if the street is to draw a comparable volume of traffic.?</p><p>To that end, she has been meeting routinely with other store owners to discuss ways to collectively promote Hertel from Parker to Delaware. ?For example, more year-round events, such as the Hertel Holiday Walk in December or Shop Rock and Stroll Friday nights during the summer, could bring many new shoppers to the area.?</p><p>If their venture continues to thrive, Schneider and her husband may consider opening another business. ?"We really love the city and want it to be vibrant. ?We are always thinking bigger and better." ?Hopefully, they'll take another chance on Hertel. ?</p><b>Chic and Sweet is located at 1453 Hertel Avenue</b> and is open I don't expect a big lift in steel demand," Zhang Dianbo, assistant president of Baosteel, told reporters at an industry conference in Dalian.</p> <p> At the same event, Liu Xiaoliang, executive deputy secretary general of the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348731492_5">Metallurgical Mines Association of China</span> said some 40 percent of China's iron ore mines have suspended operations as a slump in prices means they are losing money. Liu predicted iron ore prices would stay between $90-$110 in the next two years.</p> <p> As demand for steel has dropped, the price of <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348731492_3">iron ore</span> - a key steelmaking ingredient - fell to 3-year lows below $87 a tonne <.io62-cni> earlier this month. Prices have since bounced back to above $100, but remain 30 percent off this year's peak. [ID:nL4E8K4012]</fmg.ax></vale5.sa></p> <p> LOSS-MAKING PLANT</p> <p> The Baosteel plant, in Shanghai's Luojing district, produces steel plate used in the construction industry and for making ships and oil rigs. The company, which bought the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348731492_7">plant</span> for 14 billion yuan ($2.22 billion) in 2008, said in a statement it had been losing money due to weak demand and high costs.</p> <p> It halted its first furnace in July last year, according to a report in the weekly Investor China. The second furnace, which was losing 100 million yuan a month, was suspended earlier this month, the paper said, citing a worker at the plant.</p> <p> "With demand from shipbuilders so weak, other producers such as Angang Steel are also facing pressure," said Helen Lau, senior metals analyst at UOB-Kay Hian. She said further suspensions would depend on whether steelmakers could compensate losses from other profitable units.</p> <p> Lau said the Luojing plant was more costly to run because of its technology, with its furnaces using the Corex smelting process of gasifying non-coking coal to produce pig iron.</p> <p> A Baosteel source, who has worked at the plant, told Reuters the facility would eventually be shut as part of broader plans to relocate operations away from Shanghai.</p> <p> Chinese steelmakers, already battling over-capacity, have been struggling with razor-thin profits or losses since Beijing clamped down on the real estate sector, hitting steel demand.</p> <p> Baosteel's first-half profit more than halved, excluding one-offs, and the company has forecast that steel prices will remain under pressure this year. Baosteel shares last traded up 0.4 percent on Thursday. The stock is down around 6 percent so far this year, in line with the broader Shanghai composite index <.ssec>.</.ssec></p> <p> China's crude steel production fell 2 percent in mid-September to around 1.86 million <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348731492_6">metric tons</span> a day. Not that long ago, mega-huge music blog Pitchfork referred to Aim as ?the most impressive debut in pop-music history.? In 2003, <span class="caps">VH1</span> proudly dubbed it the 80th greatest album ever made, further proving that good music, quite simply, never goes out of?style.</p> <p>This Sunday, Costello returns to town for a solo set at the Granada Theatre as part of his 2054: The Centenary Show tour. ?It?s a lighthearted way of saying that the show can contain anything,? Costello explained recently via phone. ?In that respect, it?s really not that different from the Spinning Songbook show, except there?s no big piece of carnival apparatus to make the selections. Instead, I?m making?them.?</p> <p>Costello is, of course, referring to his preferred means of touring with his band The Imposters, whereby he spins a <em>Wheel of Fortune</em>?style wheel of song titles in order to determine the night?s on-the-fly set list. But ask those who caught Costello during his 2010 solo jaunt, and they?ll tell you that, even without the band, Elvis is well worth the price of admission. Why? Because left to his own devices, he will gladly go?anywhere.</p> <p>?I like that feeling of spontaneity, and I wanted to retain it even when I?m playing the solo shows,? he said of the set he?ll bring to Santa Barbara. ?I don?t even have to ask anyone?s opinion! I thought, just let some songs select themselves, and they will find their kin amongst my repertoire, if you know what I mean. Over the years, you might return to themes or have two different views of the same subject that were written 20 years apart. I?m letting that be my?guide.?</p> <p>With a career that runs the gamut from pop to jazz to country and stretches over 27 albums, fans can expect pretty much anything from Costello. Of late, the bespectacled and besuited icon has been on a bit of a country kick, recording in Nashville alongside songwriter, producer, and friend T Bone Burnett for 2009?s <em>Secret, Profane <span class="amp">&</span> Sugarcane</em> and 2010?s <em>National Ransom</em>. Most recently, though, he?s been touring hard, as well as contributing to wife Diana Krall?s upcoming album, also produced by?Burnett.</p> <p>?T Bone has a feeling for music that?s just so strong,? Costello said. ?He never has the arrogance of placing himself between the music and the artist ? and that?s at the root of every great record you?hear.?</p> <p>And Costello knows a thing or two about great records. Last time he swung through town, fans were treated to an intimate and lengthy set that ran the gamut of his musical accomplishments?????from ?Watching the Detectives,? ?Veronica,? and ?So Like Candy? to a selection of <em>My Aim Is True</em> highlights. Instrumentally, Costello?s prowess is no less impressive. Armed with an arsenal of guitars, he can not only fill a room but also create a backdrop worthy of his lyrical?compositions.</p> <p>?We?re doing a good deal of pretty well-known songs,? Costello emphasized, ?but after a number of years, you don?t want to presume that?s all people want to hear from you. Some of the bigger names in processors, like Qualcomm and Samsung, have really run away with the top-of-the-line chip business, which has put TI in a tough position. Looking into the future, TI plans to move its focus from smartphones to hopefully more profitable areas such as the industrial and automobile sectors. Executives at the company indicate that they know the growth and profits may not be as strong as the smartphone arena, but should provide better stability in the long run.</p> <p>Its really unfortunate to see TI move away from smartphones, as its chips have powered some of the best devices on the market, most recently the <a href="http://www.androidcentral.com/tags/samsung-galaxy-nexus">Samsung Galaxy Nexus</a> and range of <a href="http://www.androidcentral.com/tags/kindle-fire">Kindle Fires</a>. Tom Osborne, who put together one of the most successful coaching runs in college football history before serving in Congress and taking the reins as <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348680015_3">Nebraska</span>'s athletic director five years ago, is retiring.</p><p>The 75-year-old Osborne announced at a news conference Wednesday that he would step down Jan. 1, though he will stay for an additional six months to assist in the transition to a new athletic director.</p><p>"At some point, whether you're able to function or not, just the perception that you're getting old can get in the way," Osborne said. "I don't want to be one of those guys everybody is walking around wringing their hands trying to figure out what are we going to do with him? That happens sometimes."</p><p>Osborne, who had double-bypass heart surgery in 1985, said he has no health issues that led to his decision.</p><p>"I'm probably healthier today than when I was a member of Congress. That takes a big toll on you," he said.</p><p><span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348680015_0">Basketball</span> coach Tim Miles tweeted news of Osborne's retirement announcement shortly before Osborne spoke to reporters. Miles said Osborne leaves "an unreal legacy" at Nebraska.</p><p><span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348680015_5">Associate athletic director Jamie Williams</span>, who played tight end for Osborne in the early 1980s, said, "They don't make a lot of <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348680015_6">Tom Osbornes</span>. There aren't a lot of living legends left that you can rub elbows with every day. For him to say he's going off to pasture, I told him we have more dragons to slay. Sometimes fishing becomes more important."</p><p>Osborne said he told chancellor <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348680015_7">Harvey Perlman</span> in August that he planned to retire after the football season. Perlman said a search firm had been hired to identify candidates to succeed Osborne, and that he has already interviewed some of them.</p><p>"The decision will be his," Osborne said, referring to Perlman. "I'll support him any way I can."</p><p>Besides the success his Cornhuskers teams enjoyed from 1973-1997, Osborne served in Congress and lost a gubernatorial bid before returning to the university in 2007 to take over the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348680015_2">athletic department</span>. He oversaw the rebuilding of the football program he loves and shepherded the school's move from the Big 12 to the Big Ten.</p><p>Under Osborne's watch, the athletic department has built a new basketball practice facility and entered into a public-private partnership to build a 16,000-seat <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348680015_1">basketball</span> arena in downtown Lincoln that will open for the 2013-14 season. He also oversaw an expansion project that will increase Memorial Stadium's capacity to more than 90,000 next year.</p><p>Perlman had asked Osborne to take over the athletic department at a time of turmoil. The football program was struggling under Bill Callahan, and staff morale was low under athletic director Steve Pederson.</p><p>Osborne recalled Wednesday that when he first met with athletic department executives, a few of them told him they were receiving counseling because of stress. Several staff members either had quit or were considering quitting.</p><p>"I wouldn't say things were awful," Osborne said, "but things were a little fragmented. Some people had quit and some people were thinking about quitting. People pulled together very quickly. Hopefully, it has worked out well."</p><p>Osborne fired Callahan after the 2007 season and hired Bo Pelini, who made the Huskers competitive again and led them to the Big 12 championship game in 2009 and 2010. Among Osborne's other key personnel moves: hiring Miles from Colorado State last March to coach the men's basketball program and hiring former major-leaguer Darin Erstad in 2010 to coach baseball at his alma mater.</p><p>Osborne is most widely known for his coaching. Every one of his 25 teams won at least nine games, and three of his last four teams won national championships. He retired with a career record of 255-49-3, an .836 winning percentage that ranked fifth all-time among Division I coaches, and 13 conference titles. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1998, the year after he retired.</p><p>Osborne turned to politics after his coaching days. By overwhelming margins, voters in the western Nebraska district elected him to the House of Representatives in 2000, 2002 and 2004. In perhaps the greatest upset in Nebraska political history, Osborne lost to incumbent Dave Heineman in the 2006 Republican gubernatorial primary.</p><p>Osborne finished his third term after the crushing defeat, then returned to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he taught classes in leadership and business ethics before taking the reins of the athletic department.</p><p>"I feel we're well positioned," Osborne said. "We worked hard on the culture and part of that has not just been internal. We've tried to link this place with the former players. ... Whatever we've accomplished couldn't happen if we didn't have a united fan base. It would be hard to find one equal to our fans around the country. It allows a program in a state of 1.8 million to be competitive with programs in densely populated areas."</p><p>Perlman praised Osborne for stabilizing the athletic department.</p><p>"There are people you can admire from a distance and then when you get up close you see all the warts," he said. "That's not been my experience with Tom. But what actually accounts for the association between exercise and mental health?</p> <p>A new article in <em>Clinical Psychological Science</em>, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, explores whether certain psychosocial factors may help to explain the benefits of daily physical activity for adolescents' mental health.</p> <p>Karin Monshouwer of the Trimbos Institute in the Netherlands and colleagues at Trimbos and VU University Medical Center specifically wanted to examine two existing explanations for the link between exercise and mental health. The self-image hypothesis suggests that physical activity has positive effects on body weight and body structure, leading to positive feedback from peers and improved self-image, and ultimately improving mental health. The social interaction hypothesis, on the other hand, holds that it's the social aspects of physical activity -- such as social relationships and mutual support among team members -- that contribute to the positive effects of exercise on mental health.</p> <p>Monshouwer and her colleagues surveyed over 7000 Dutch students, ages 11 to 16. The adolescents completed validated surveys aimed at assessing their physical activity, mental health problems, body weight perception, and participation in organized sports. The researchers also gathered data on the adolescents' age, gender, and socioeconomic status; whether they lived at home with their parents; and whether they lived in an urban area.</p> <p>The researchers found that adolescents who were physically inactive or who perceived their bodies as either "too fat" or "too thin" were at greater risk for both internalizing problems (e.g., depression, anxiety) and externalizing problems (e.g., aggression, substance abuse). Adolescents who participated in organized sports, on the other hand, were at lower risk for mental health problems.</p> <p>Confirming both the self-image hypothesis and the social interaction hypothesis, adolescents' body weight perception (i.e., "too heavy," "good," or "too thin") and sports club membership each partially accounted for the relationship between physical activity and mental health, even after taking adolescents' backgrounds into account.</p> <p>These results suggest that certain psychosocial factors -- body image and social interaction -- may help to explain at least part of the connection between physical activity and mental health. The researchers acknowledge, however, that other factors, such as the physiological effects of exercise, are probably also at work.</p> <p>"We think that these findings are important for policymakers and anyone who works in healthcare or prevention. Our findings indicate that physical activity may be one effective tool for the prevention of mental health problems in adolescence," says Monshouwer.</p> <p>Monshouwer and her colleagues hope that future studies will be able to examine similar questions while following participants over time. The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) has urged the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to extend the last date for filing income tax returns for the period July 2011 to 30th June 2012 up to 31st October 2012 to enable all the SMEs to file their returns correctly after completing their accounts without rush and hurry.</p> <p>President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver said the FBR has announced that the last date for filing income tax returns is 30th September 2012 which is not convenient as during the month of September there have been disturbances, strikes and holidays and the entrepreneurs have not been able to complete and finalize their accounts.</p> <p>He said even the income tax practitioners have not been able to attend their offices. The NFL conceded Tuesday that a bad call cost the Green Bay Packers the game ? yet still upheld the Seattle Seahawks' victory.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">While coaches, players and fans ? even athletes in other sports ? ripped the use of replacement refs, the league met with its locked-out officials Tuesday in an attempt to resolve the impasse.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Two people with knowledge of the talks told The Associated Press that the sides were meeting Tuesday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were not made public.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The NFL said Seattle's last-second touchdown pass of the "Monday Night Football" game should not have been overturned in the 14-12 victory ? but acknowledged Seahawks receiver Golden Tate should have been called for offensive pass interference before the catch.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Frustrations over the replacements have mounted through the first three weeks of the season and reached an apex Monday when a highly questionable call decided the outcome of a game.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, normally a soft-spoken player who didn't say much after the game, lashed out on his radio show a day later.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"First of all, I've got to do something that the NFL is not going to do: I have to apologize to the fans," he said.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Even President Barack Obama got in on the conversation Tuesday, tweeting: "NFL fans on both sides of the aisle hope the refs' lockout is settled soon."</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The controversy began on the final play when Russell Wilson heaved a 24-yard pass into a scrum in the end zone with Seattle trailing 12-7. Tate shoved away a defender with both hands, and the NFL acknowledged Tuesday he should have been penalized, which would have clinched a Packers victory. But it was not called and cannot be reviewed by instant replay.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Tate and Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings then both got their hands on the ball, though the Packers insisted Jennings had clear possession for a game-ending interception.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"It was pinned to my chest the whole time," Jennings said.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Instead, the officials ruled on the field that the two had simultaneous possession, which counts as a reception. Once that happened, the NFL said, the referee was correct that no indisputable visual evidence existed on review to overturn the touchdown call.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"The NFL Officiating Department reviewed the video today and supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review," the league said in a statement.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Saying there was no indisputable evidence, though, is not the same as confirming the initial call was correct. Simultaneous possession can be reviewed only on plays in the end zone.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">On his weekly appearance on Seattle radio station 710 KIRO-AM, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made no apologies Tuesday, saying, "The league backed it up and game over. We win."</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"Golden makes an extraordinary effort. It's a great protection. It's a great throw. It's a great attempt at the ball and he wins the battle," he said. "They were right on the point looking right at it, standing right over the thing and they reviewed it. The Glantz-Culver line for the game opened favoring the Packers by 4?.
